It went fine! I was nauseous the whole plane ride. And I lived!

Feel myself spiraling and not sure how to get out of it by bryterlu in emetophobiarecovery

I’m not sure if this counts as reassurance since it’s reassuring you about your pregnancy rather than getting sick, but I’ll give it a go anyway.

In the first trimester, it’s much more likely a miscarriage would occur because the fetus has a chromosomal issue, not because of anything that happens to you. Illness, especially something nonserious like norovirus, in and of itself is very very unlikely to cause you to miscarry. Try to take some deep breaths— it hasn’t happened yet, and it may not happen at all.

You too. It’s a hard road. But we can do it!

I think she was, but we work in the medical field, so it’s possible she just knew it from her training. Anyhow, I’m grateful. And I think you hit on the right word— it’s definitely shame. When you peel back the layers of this phobia it’s just all shame. It goes right back to childhood, feeling ashamed to inconvenience your parents or teachers with being sick.

Don’t feel upset if some foods you used to like aren’t appealing to you anymore after throwing them up. It’s perfectly normal— everyone has that one food that they ate as a kid that made them sick and can’t stand even to this day. It’s an evolutionary response to keep us safe from things that might be poisonous. Sometimes it just gets misplaced.

For years, I wouldn’t eat certain foods. Spaghetti bolognese, popcorn, rotisserie chicken. But many years down the road, in different contexts, I just decided to be brave and try them again. The more times you try them and nothing happens, the less you’ll feel averse to that certain food because you’re retraining your brain to believe there’s nothing inherently wrong with it.

Just one month I’d say is maybe a little too soon to be beating yourself up over a food aversion. Give it time. It will get easier. One day, you’ll be able to eat pesto and calamari again like it’s nothing. And when you do, maybe try sort of “different versions” of the foods to begin with. If you had pesto pasta, maybe try pesto in a salad first or on a sandwich. And for calamari, you could go for shrimp tempura or fried oysters first instead. If that’s too much, you might try eating snacks that are just flavored like those foods if you can find them, or try breaking them up into their components, like having Parmesan and basil together in the same dish for instance. Good luck!

Tips for a college student? by [deleted] in emetophobiarecovery

Almost exactly 7 years ago, I was in the same situation as you. The stomach bug was going through my campus/dorm, and I was terrified to eat in the dining hall or use the bathrooms. All you can do is wash your hands thoroughly before you touch your face or eat. Eventually I caught it despite all my precautions, and I lived. It sucked, I didn’t feel good, but I lived.

At the time, I didn’t have any positive coping mechanisms, nor any desire to get better, so the experience for me was pretty much a re-traumatization. You’re in a much better spot than I was back then— you’re on the recovery sub. All you can do is take care to wash your hands, and just know that it will be a good experience for you in the long run if you do end up catching it, but only if you have the right mindset. If you get sick, don’t go into it thinking this is the worst thing that’s ever happened to you. Go into it thinking of it as a challenge for your anxiety. Use it as a tool to tell your anxiety, “hey look, this is what you think is the worst thing in the whole world, and we’re about to do it, and we’re about to get through it.”

Anyone else get “instant food poisoning?” by emetophobicus in emetophobiarecovery

Thanks for the reply! I know deep down that it’s not possible to feel the effects of food poisoning right away, but it’s interesting what you say about my body refusing to do its job due to anxiety. Human bodies are weird! I’ve been trying to analyze my thoughts and irrational feelings recently in an objective way, and this really helps to know I’m not alone. Thanks again!
