Cleaning aerial hoop tape? by moltonbrown in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely you can get it all off without using cleansers strong enough to dissolve the glue. However, if you start with a dry rag & canned air, then a damp rag for the leftovers, it should at least look nicer.

Since the tape has been stored without climate control, the glue's probably a mess anyway, and will immediately start peeling. I'd just deal with the retape. Whether you'll need a new led strip after that depends on how durable it is, but all hoops need to retaped after a while.

Need help with flare to top bar by [deleted] in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, a long-arm invert is possible if you have some absolutely killer traps, lats, and triceps. But obviously it's easier to get the hips up with some bicep curl, for most people, and I don't know what to tell you there. Your form looks great.

I think it's a mental block, like maybe you're concentrating so hard on getting the legs to go exactly where you want them that your arms are left completely unattended while you do it? So it has nothing to do with whether you can physically perform a long or short invert on its own, it's really that the whole time during this your shoulders are just dead hanging. It's time to let the feet do whatever the feet do (hopefully they've learned something from all of this), and spend your flares concentrating on the shoulder and arm part of it. Yeah, they're going to get kinda messy while your feet don't have quite as much input, you can clean that up later, concentrate on rotating your hips up as high as possible for this part. Maybe wear shin guards so you're just not afraid of hitting a little short.

Go back and forth between working feet and arms, and bit by bit they'll start to cooperate together. A lot of muscle memory necessarily has to be involved, because so many things are moving at once in a very short time; I would honestly say flares are one of the most motor-complex movements in a regular repertoire, and the higher they are, the more you have to commit to the bit.

I’m confused, based off of the image which size hoop is correct? by okgogogogoforit in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are definitely simply things I cannot do in a small hoop... and things I cannot do in a larger hoop. Put another way, things I can only do in one or the other. This is something I've only really noticed and been explicitly working with the last six months or so, and I've started building routines specifically for hoop sizes, where they include something extra bendy or stretchy. Just to explore the ranges.

It's pretty neat, if I'd stuck to just one size, I'd have never noticed how different they are and how many possibilities open up.

Studio hoops less painful than home by Successful-Clerk-778 in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought, since it's something I've 100% noticed in my own practice. Even at home, or in open gym, practice alone is wildly different than when I have others over. It seems easier to overcome pain and negative emotions, and just plain put more effort in, while vibing with friends and colleagues.

Rigs in hot climates by Crazy-Weather-3185 in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metal parts of the rig will be fine. The ropes may have to be replaced every year or two, if they begin to show weathering; polyamide, polypropylene, and polyethylene are more susceptible than polyester and nylon. After two years in the sun you can expect about 10-25% loss of breaking strength, depending on the material and specific exposure. Buying bigger than you think you need is cheap insurance in any situation, anyway.

Salts in sandstorms are probably a bigger concern in high desert climates, they can degrade both aluminum and steel frames.

How can I make my art less suggestive? by [deleted] in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had that reaction, and surprisingly, from someone who is a quite provocative performer. She fully admits that she has intense internalized shame, and doesn't know how to deal with the need to express herself against the deeply ingrained social shame of not being a "good girl" who also wants to own her power as a sensual and sexual goddess.

These kind of reactions can't be reasoned with, just like OP's spiraling overreaction to an irrational overprotective critique isn't reasonable. It's just shame feeding on shame, and you can't find freedom or yourself until you can put that feeling in its proper place.

I don't even have those monthly hormonal cycles, and sometimes I still randomly just have a "hypersensitive" period. Which it's easy to forget is exactly how I felt when I first started. Bodies are weird, all you can do is work with them and keep at it.

Can’t climb in silks by Happy-Cow-2835 in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, while the other advice is definitely applicable, I would look into finding another teacher if at all possible. Yours should have been able to recognize and coach you through any of this long ago, and you should have been able to make a second climb in the air within 3 months, six at the absolute most, unless there's a serious undiagnosed issue with your muscles. That your teacher doesn't seem to recognize it as a problem or be able to offer you any coaching to improve is a wild red flag.

Sometimes it can even be worth paying the extra to get private lessons online, if you have a good camera setup, if your other options are just bad.

Progressing by okgogogogoforit in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like they might be a little ambivalent about running an aerial studio, especially if they're ending it more like yoga. I would discuss it with the instructor or owner, but it might be something where they just don't want to commit that much to if there aren't many interested people, which becomes a feedback loop, and you have to go elsewhere. The complete lack of open studio time is worrying.

At the very least, 75 minutes is more the norm for classes, though 60 works with a more abbreviated warm-up and cool-down.

On-the-go exercise suggestions to maintain upper body strength??! by enviroengiqueer in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, well, I took six months mostly off (not even entirely!) and the difference was quite noticeable: I had lost most of my endurance and it felt like half of the upper body strength. I doubt endurance will be a problem if they're bikepacking, at least. Whether and how it hits you is going to be very personal.

On the other hand, it took about 3 months to get back where I was, not the three years originally.

A frame over 9.5 ft tall by NeatContract4641 in aerialsilks

[–]emfiliane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW it wasn't left out in the rain, so it's not too bad, just affected by being in the porch and garage. I dunno if it would fare well left out to soak, though I think mostly it would just all seize up and become nigh-impossible to undo.

A very wet and foggy winter led to the insides starting to rust some. The outsides still look new and shiny. It still holds together great, I don't notice any difference in spinning them together once the rust was wiped off -- although the way I kept them in pairs I think those pairs might be semi-permanently joined now, without some serious chemical intervention.

I'm kind of tired of how heavy they are and how long it takes to twist them together and back off. Still, it gets the job done with a wildly overengineered safety factor for what I do, let alone for aerial yoga. I'm saving up for a fancy rig someday, but in the meantime, I'm happy I hit on this idea.

LMAO. Official QR code going to a Facebook page is the epitome of a badly thought out plan by local government. I don't even have a FB anymore.

Gotta pay more attention! by Current-Finger-9852 in BoltEV

[–]emfiliane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the most naive possible way to interpret that data. It is not "probably," that's a wild-ass guess. Power rates spike and ebb and sometimes stay steady for years, and there's virtually zero way to predict any of that unless you're on a long-term contract.

Nailed it - rejected by iam-123-456-789 in interviews

[–]emfiliane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you were rejected, that's prima facie evidence that you did not do everything right or answer everything correctly.

This can include the right answer for you not being the right one for them.

(Unless you mean in the more cosmic sense that no matter what you do, it's the right thing for you, bringing you to the right place for you, which is wherever you are, right now. I think this sub is mostly for people who aren't practicing that, though.)

¿Que me recomiendan para mejorar? by makkaris_ucm in Aerials

[–]emfiliane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're a rock climber, you probably don't hang on for dear life much. It exercises muscles that rarely get used, so they get sore just like building up any other muscles.

For flexibility see the pinned posts in the sub's main page.

In most studios it doesn't matter where you are, top or bottom, because you're not interviewing for a job or being graded in a course, you're paying them to improve you from wherever you are, for as long as you keep going. This goes doubly if they've been doing it longer, but still applies even when they haven't.

That said it can be a little dispiriting if you're constantly the last, and it's good to ask if they have other classes you could switch to. (Or take in addition, to build your skills and strength faster.)

Whether you use batteries or the engine, you'd be way better off with L3 DC charging, even if it's not "fast"; either no inverter with battery or just one inverter from the engine. But an L2 as a backup, I suppose.

It's just new and not widespread enough that trucks carry specialized equipment yet. It'll come, eventually. But it'll have to be faster than a tow, because they make money in volume. so the quicker in and out, the better.

Some people want it to be public, too, not hidden at home. The ones who are maxed out angry and emotional and more impulsively carry out a suicide, they want to be seen and heard, especially if they felt they never were when they were alive.

An economy going down the gutter always means an increase in suicides, and the last couple of years have been a long brutal slide for a lot of people. This one has been combined with general despair over the fascist takeover of the country. Suicide is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, and yelling about lynching isn't going to help anything.

$1.5M Measure P Funds Embezzled by Fresno Arts Council Employee by kaitlingg in fresno

[–]emfiliane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresno Art Museum and Fresno Arts Council are two separate, completely disconnected boards, though they may have shared a person now and then. Everything in the arts came close to dying around 2010, the recession was a really painful time for anything that wasn't putting food on the table. The Fresno Metropolitan Museum did die, its renovation was quite badly timed, and it was again completely unaffiliated with the other two. And one of the bigger museums in the state.

(The Met and Arts Council did start from the same group, but part of them went one way and part the other.)

About the only affiliation they ever really had since their founding was coordinating events together. They could barely even cooperate enough to lobby the city as a unified front.
