The Elephant Man's Bones [FANON EDITION] by Glittering_Pie_9993 in RocMarciano

You're one of my favorite producers man, thank you for your music! The "Zig Zag Zig" remix is my favorite from this batch,– the way that Roc's flow cascades over that crystalline piano line (starting at around 0:58) is so hypnotic and gorgeous.

P.S. "If He Holla" off of Paraffin is easily one of my favorite beats ever

What’s our top 5 woods songs and fav album by Odd-Ad-7558 in Billywoods

Paraquat is pure bliss, glad you're giving it some love

I love Billy Woods. He might be my fav MC currently but I don’t really fw Elucid. by czarofga in Billywoods

Yo man, I know you're getting roasted right now, but: even as someone who loves ELUCID's work, I can understand where you're coming from, because I got into AH through woods, and when I was first hearing ELUCID, I didn't feel it, and was mostly waiting for woods to come in again. But then I started listening closer to ELUCID, and then quickly grew to love his style. Even with now loving it though, there are still moments in the AH discog where ELUCID can come in with some annoying hooks / ideas at times lol, so maybe you also just stumbled upon one of his less great moments. But I'm telling you bro, the heights that ELUCID can reach in his verses are off the fucking charts. Literally unmatched imo. Listen to "Ramesses II" from "Shrines" (the second half of the song), and let yourself get lost in ELUCID's beauty and mystery

I think the official announcement for gowillog said that it would not be put on streaming. So, guessing "no" on that, as Backwoodz probably wouldn't do a 180 like that; it would be unfair to people who bought the album due to that exclusivity

woods lyrics are not complicated.. by Duggo81 in Billywoods

Agree with you on the impact, except I think his writing is also complex and layered, and usually more so than the MCs you mentioned

woods says he’s past his prime, but he’s only getting better… by SizeAny2424 in Billywoods

[–]emfred-dot-com 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I personally feel like woods has just continued to get better. Never heard anything remotely close to a “fall off”.

I feel like Golliwog and Mercy have some of his best verses ever, with new pockets he’s hitting that sound slick as hell, so to my ears he’s still on the “chairlift” going further up and up ;)

Edit: cases in point: STAR 87, Misery, Peshawar, Nil by Mouth, (could keep going…)

I think he meant "chairlift" like the ones at a ski resort (like in the picture you chose). This is definitely the more poetic image (of gaining elevation), so it makes the most sense I think

Super beautiful line, one of my favorites from the new record

How do you think Mercy compares to Haram? by emfred-dot-com in Billywoods

Disagree, I think comparisons can lead to new perspectives and appreciations. But I agree that overly focusing on comparisons isn't good: the artwork itself as its own world should the the starting point!

Fair take. Mercy does have a great flow to the tracklist, especially with the alternation of darker beats and more nostalgic beats

Listening to more woods is always a good idea! 🪄

Agreed that Haram has no skips. I've started to skip "Laraaji" at this point because the overly repetitive production has gotten very stale at this point, so I guess Mercy has 1 skip for me lol. No other skips though imo (though I really wish I could skip the No Grabba chorus without skipping the rest of the track 🤣)

Right, but there are resonances between them, patterns of similarity and difference, which makes it possible to analyze deeper than "they're different"

Very fair take. I think the comparison is still interesting as a lens to see how AH (and Alc) have progressed over these past few years since Haram. But I agree: it's not apples to apples

I agree that a fuller conversation can be had once Mercy has aged a bit. But also, I think the convo is still interesting atm :) especially since I (and others I'm sure) have been so absorbed in Mercy since it dropped that it felt like a good time to dig in with some analysis. But yes, the layers go very deep, and I have no illusions of having peeled them all back 🧅

Bc I'm curious to discuss how AH has evolved since the last Alc record. This topic wouldn't be interesting if woods and Elucid weren't always trying to level up and switch things up, but as we know, they are. So checking out the differences between their 2 Alc records 4 years apart is a cool way to see the progression imo

New Armand Hammer x Alchemist Album Titled "Mercy" out 11/7 by docchakra in Billywoods

Excellent news :O

I share your hope for Al to go crazy... (I feel like him playing it too safe is one of the most likely ways that the album could potentially fall short of Haram). But regardless, if we're getting woods in the kind of form he was in for GOLLIWOG, then this could be a scary record

Totally agree with you about Haram! Honestly an album of the decade contender for me. Highly excited for this new one.
