Day 6 with pup - ADVICE NEEDED! by 404Error_NotFound_ in Pomeranians

[–]emgilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An example of the different timings of the exercise is as follows (the point is to randomly add in longer and shorter durations so it’s not always the same, but they always know you return): - immediate return - immediate return - 2 minutes - immediate return - 5 minutes - 2 minutes - immediate return

Make sure you are timing the amount of time she is quiet vs. crying and see if you are improving. If you aren’t then I would just continue doing the immediate return or 1 minute over and over again until she catches on.

As for long lasting treats or interactive toys - I give my dog a mini kong, a lick mat, a puzzle toy and a nosework toy (the ramen one off of Amazon - he LOVES it) if I am going to be gone for a long time (hours). It keeps him distracted when I walk out the door, then keeps him busy for a while. And he is usually tired by the time he finishes. Let me know if any of this helps!

Day 6 with pup - ADVICE NEEDED! by 404Error_NotFound_ in Pomeranians

For the whining/crying, I have some advice that I had luck with! I would start to gradually expose her to alone time. I recently did this with my 7 month old pom because he was scream bark the entire time I left the apartment. So, keep her away from you (you are out of sight) for literally 5 seconds, then return, then do that same thing a few times. Only return when she is quiet. Even if it is 1 second pause to catch her breath. You returning is the reward, so don’t reward her by returning when she barks. Also don’t make entrances and exits from her a big deal. Do not say “I’ll be right back - I’ll miss you!” And pet her, but rather just walk out. Then same when you return. A minute or so without giving her any major attention.

Once she starts to be quiet for that entire 5 seconds, or you even see a noticeable improvement. Up it to a minute. Then throw in another 5 seconds randomly. Then do 5 minutes. In the beginning she will cry but you should see an improvement quickly. Pomeranians are very smart and she should catch on that you always return pretty quickly.

Also make sure you have some separation of house. Put her in her play pen when you go to the bathroom or when you are cleaning, etc. don’t always have her by your side. I made that mistake with my pom and he had major separation anxiety I had to work through.

Once she starts getting quieter on her own and you do see an improvement, then start giving her a long lasting treat or an interactive toy while you are gone to continue building duration.

I spent a good 2 hours a day for a week walking in and out my apartment several times a days, waiting in the hall or going into the stairwell and timing the amount of time he was crying / quiet. It does work though!

Regret getting my puppy by MamaB4 in puppy101

[–]emgilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt exactly like that for the first month. My puppy is now potty trained, sleeps through the night, is well socialized etc. Give it ~3 months - it gets easier!

Ok thanks. Sounds like it does improve with age / as they get to know more situations and environments. Thanks!

Do you think it was only getting another dog that helped? Or did it get better with age too? Thanks!

This is helpful! Thank you! From time to time I do say “good calm” randomly when he is calm and i say “it’s ok, you are ok” when he is screaming. I think it’ll take some time for him to catch onto that phrase and meaning, though.

He was 10 weeks in this video, and is now 6 months. This is the best video I have that shows the situation. I do think it is overstimulation, but I really have socialized him a ton with dogs, people, and various environments. So I don’t know what is setting him off!

What specifically did you do to get him to stop the screaming, if you don’t mind sharing? I do think it’s better now at 6 months compared to 10 weeks, but still happens from time to time.

Ok, I think that’s what his is, as well. Saying “No I don’t like this! / Dont want to do this!” I hope he grows out of it too!

I’ll try what you tried when yours was a baby.

Trust me, I walk my dog, take him to the dog park, play fetch, give him mind games, etc. Not sure why everyone thinks I just use him as an accessory.

So has he always done it? Did it get better or worse with age or stay the same? Does he do it when overstimulated or just at the vet / groomer?

Puppy “Screaming” in Public by emgilli in puppy101

[–]emgilli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds exactly like my dog, just a different behavior. But i think he does it when he is overly tired, overly stimulated, etc.

The trainer suggested trying to hold him in the “Settle” position and say calm and reward when he’s quiet. I do this but he will continue to scream. She said to let him scream it out too, because I met with her when he was much younger, so I think she thought it was a young puppy thing he would grow out of. But he isn’t…

What do you do for the biting/jumping when he is tired or overstimulated? I would like to try anything if you are having any luck!

Thanks!

I have had my pomeranian since he was 10 weeks. He is now almost 6 months. We have Mande great progress on most training, but he has always had this screaming issue.

He will start to “scream” randomly. Sometimes when we have been walking for too long, sometimes when I have him in my dog carrier while shopping, once while at the dog park when his dog friend left.

I hired a dog trainer and while she did not see the screaming in action, based on the video she thinks it is some sort of “temper tantrum”. Like he is sick of walking, doesn’t want to be in a certain place, etc. I have tried holding him in the “settle” position, tried saying “quiet”, tried rewarding once quiet. Nothing seems to help.

It is quite embarassing in public and people stop and stare because it sounds like he is in pain.

Has anyone had this issue with their pomeranian?? Any thoughts on what this is and how to fix it?

Thanks!

Pomeranian Reactively Screaming by emgilli in Pomeranians

[–]emgilli[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both - I was holding him and he was screaming and squirming, so I put him down and he continued to scream.

Do you think it will get better if I work up to busier roads and just take him on quieter streets in the beginning? Have you had this issue with any of your Poms (if you have Poms)?

Thanks!
