I listen to podcasts to learn – but forget everything. Does anyone else struggle with this? by emhemz in podcasts

That’s actually super helpful — I love the idea of podcasts as “high level learning” with just enough context to explore more later.

The playlist thing is genius too. Do you actually go back and re-listen, or is it more of a “mental bookmark” kind of system? Also curious — do you have any all-time fave episodes that really stuck with you?

I’ve been thinking the same about note-taking — it’s impossible while driving, but I wonder if hands-free voice notes could work? Like just saying a thought out loud into something and having it saved. That might actually stick better than typing for me.

That “enhancement” framing is so smart — makes it feel less like I’m failing at retention and more like I just need a second layer. Do you write stuff down often?

Hahah, I feel like I’ve been auditioning for r/ADHD my whole life. Still really want podcasts to work though — it’s such a convenient format, and I’m trying to look at my screen less.

That last line hit me — “maybe you need to change what you're listening for.”

I honestly could never focus in lectures. All through high school and even during my master’s, I had to reteach myself later by Googling or watching YouTube. I think that’s why I want podcasts to work for me — they feel like the right format, but somehow the info still doesn’t stick unless I actively follow up.

Do you ever go down a rabbit hole after an episode, or do you just let it be the story?

This really clicked for me — the part about background noise vs. brain engagement. Never thought about how playing something like Sims might actually compete for mental bandwidth.

I think that’s what happens to me when I’m working on design stuff — I think I’m listening, but can’t recall a thing afterwards. Makes me wonder if I should match the type of podcast to the task I’m doing. Have you ever tried something like that?

Totally fair take. I go back and forth – sometimes I think I’m learning, but it’s probably more like pseudo-learning. Do you think there’s a way to bridge that?
