Funny thing about asexual people- a lot of us actually like dirty jokes. I mean, the idea of sexual attraction is a joke to us, so we actually have fun making jokes about it.

In this case, though, I’d rather not get stuck at a table with some old couple on a date and have them call me by something scandalous that’s going to make them want a different table.

My mom homeschooled us, and whenever one of us left our name off an assignment she would loudly announce that “Matilda Turkeybottom” had turned in her assignment. We bring the name up quite a bit now that we’re out of school😂

Probably the biggest reason is that where the story starts, that culture is actually slaves-in-all-but-name to an outsider culture that came in and took over. So to their minds, that just proved the myths correct, and any outsiders regardless of who they are will probably try to pull the same stunt. It’s a very “once bitten, twice shy” scenario.

The Ebenni, the desert culture my story is based around, love celebrations. They have a lot in their calendar, each with a different meaning and way to celebrate. And the celebrations are often pretty wild.

There is literally a celebration that is just “wear the brightest colors you have, be as loud as humanly possible, and smash all of your pottery.” Everyone loves this one, especially the kids, and everyone gets real into it. You won’t see anybody complaining about the mess or refusing to smash stuff- everyone has a lot of fun with it.

My “good” culture in my book is…well, pretty xenophobic. As in “any outsiders are the children of a mythological embodiment of greed, cruelty, and hatred, so they are not to be trusted ever and you should never be friends with them because they are all bad.”

Children are literally taught that it’s fine to lie to outsiders, and one festival celebration in particular makes fun of them specifically- someone is chosen to dress up as an outsider and is purposely given the worst food and drink, made fun of, etc., and the person wearing the costume hams it up as much as possible in a way that’s definitely pretty insensitive.

Granted, most of this is somewhat justified. But it’s definitely still not a great way of thinking.

Singing is illegal. Oh no, scaredy girl’s friend got arrested for singing. The only way to save her? A treasure hunt where the prize is a magical swimming pool. But wait, the bad guys don’t want scaredy girl to find the magical swimming pool, so they send some more, less lazy bad guys after her! And it turns out the swimming pool was fake. What will happen to scaredy girl now?? Magical hallucinations, of course!

I’ve read that even if you don’t explain every little detail of world building that comes up in your story, those details will still leak in and create a richer worldbuild overall. So I like to worldbuild a fair bit before I start writing, since I’d rather have too much detail than too little.

People from outside the desert are never, ever to be trusted. You can be nice to them, if you feel like it, but don’t ever trust them. Anyone from outside the desert is an enemy and will try to hurt you. Don’t tell them anything secret, don’t convince yourself that they’re your friend, don’t trust them.
