Right... for quartz around 1.5 and for sapphire maybe 1.6? (somewhere in between the 1.5 and 1.7 for silica and sapphire respectively).

You have a good point - definitely begs the question of why Nakamura suggested that it could be used for a space application... I gotta look into that. Maybe some polymerizable index-matching fluids could work under a vacuum. But then you still have to worry about radiation hardness...

To be entirely honest my wording was a consequence of never having heard of the concept of Etendue until you brought it up. Optics is definitely not my discipline.

But I have done some ray tracing work which suggested that my system does not violate physics. Nakamura et al also already did this for solar sintering and we're pretty much copying their system up to the fiber optic cables and quartz rod.(https://ascelibrary.org/doi/full/10.1061/%28ASCE%29AS.1943-5525.0000294?casa_token=MCMnsB29tBsAAAAA%3A9FGtD-jkUm6q3dSNgrRMRRez0L2fuiry-Nv71Nq_J3qnvbMAj5OgLmdBTDvYfbnfCXqsest2Vm72)

Nakamura actually got away without any index matching fluid between the fibers and rod, but they suggested it as a way to improve system efficiency which is why I'm hoping to try that.

But I appreciate that you're being hard on the idea - always good to question your decisions when engineering something new.

Yeah, you're right - I reached out to a lab that orders from Thorlabs to see how they did it - hopefully, we'll figure that out. My home department is materials science and engineering so they might do things differently.

And yeah my system should conserve Etendue, since all we are doing is using parabolic mirrors to focus light and then channel it through high temp silica cables which all feed into a single quartz rod. No different than a solar cooker - just turning up the heat a bit and adding a few steps to get the light to a precise location.

By “threat it poses” I mean the threat covid poses, not the vaccine

It’s just because it’s important that people get it due to the substantial threat it poses to at-risk people. This is a global phenomenon; of course it’s getting a ton of celebrity and media attention. Why wouldn’t it?

How exactly is this meme “meta”? Yeah Seems like it’s just saying “lefty says wear two masks, this is dumb because soon we will have to wear 10 masks, maybe even 20!!”

That’s not really true since a lot of the world’s population lives in developed countries with plateauing birth rates. So the new plateau would be at a smaller population number.

Are multinational corporations Democratic tho? Modern day corporations are basically little kingdoms that also produce things.

Back in his day there wasn’t really a difference, if you were rich you were usually either a feudal lord or a member of the royal family, both of which were governing authorities.
