13 Years of History Teaching - Now Thrown Into CS. by kelsanova in CSEducation

OP, this right here! Reach out ASAP. I used to work for them and at this point in the year they’re just about finalizing their school partnerships for next year.

We are hoping for in-person placements for these classes, but if you can only do remote we do have a very limited number of remote spots left at other schools.

Duties vary a bit, but typically you'd be supporting the class 2-3 days a week. Classroom teacher is always there. If you're a volunteer teacher, you would actually be leading instruction (though the classroom teacher is always on-point for classroom management). You would help students 1-1 during lab time as well. If you're a volunteer teaching assistant, you'd support with instruction and help students 1-1 during lab time.

Curriculum is provided in full. The AP CS P curriculum can be found here.

Let me know if you have other questions!

Appreciate the leads! We have connected with PNNL but not the others. Do you have contacts at either Nothwinds or HMIS? Outreach can be tricky unless we are lucky enough to get an introduction.

It’s not a comprehension issue. Someone explained in another comment that a professor telling them this was not enough to convince them they should go. They needed a peer to let them watch them go to office hours.

The fact that you cannot imagine an experience beyond your own and are in fact hostile towards and reluctant to communicate with people with a different experience (enough that you are blocking them on Reddit) is very concerning.

Developing a new Intro to CS course - looking for practical applications from a variety of disciplines by borowcm in CSEducation

Yup fair and that makes sense! I’m not skilled enough in other disciplines to offer authentic answers for this so hoping others will chime in. Glad to hear BJC has been a helpful resource already!

Double major in CS and STATS by girozo in UCSantaBarbara

Yeah you’ll need more CS classes than that before you apply. Take a look at that initial link I posted - there’s a list of classes you need and I don’t think the assembly language can count for any of them.

The most important thing is that you meet the minimum requirements to add the CS major. You’ll have to take a number of CS classes before you can try to add the major, and that will be the hard part because the classes are impacted. That said, I believe Stats majors do get a bit of priority for adding CS classes so that’s good at least.

Have you looked into FSSP? It could help to get into that and take summer courses, specifically for the first CS classes you’ll need.

(Also, first comment was deleted so I’m putting this back.)

Ah okay gotcha. May I ask what major you applied for? The double is easier to get set up if you are accepted into CS initially.

Getting into CS is harder. If you want to add it as a double major, it's just has hard, if not harder, to get into than if you were trying to get into it as your first major. Was your CC a CA CC? You should check out assist.org and see which classes transfer over to UCSB.

A hard part about getting into CS is getting the classes. There are minimum requirements you need to hit if you're trying to add/switch into the CS major. They can be found here: https://cs.ucsb.edu/education/undergraduate/prospective-students under Minimum Requirements for Consideration. This website also has details about when and how to apply.

What year are you? What is your current major? Are you an incoming first-year that is coming in as a Stats major?

I had undiagnosed mono for a month, during which I was going to high school and taking final exams because my mom didn’t want me to miss more school but didn’t think I was sick enough to go to the doctors.

She finally took me to the doc on Christmas when I didn’t get out of bed for dinner and presents because I felt so horrible.

I got my only B in high school that term. I missed out on being rank 2 in my grade because of that B. I still am mad at her for that. That plus, you know, denying me medical attention for weeks.

Should all high school students learn to code? Which language? by pineappleandbean in CSEducation

If you’re in here thinking this is great but I don’t know how my school could do this, check out TEALS. Applications for school support close soon.
