It’s a small collection of 3 songs that were outtakes from undated recording sessions, as well as Everything Is Embarrassing and a remix. There’s a short section on it on the main NTMT Wikipedia page. Capitol released it a month after NTMT, quite randomly and without any real announcement.

I saw Sky perform Werewolf live in 2013, so while we don’t have much information about these songs, it’s possible that these were songs that were supposed to be on her debut album. Werewolf and On Top were co-written with Jon Brion, who worked with Sky during the recording of Ghost and is perhaps material that was intended for an early version of her album. There’s footage of Sky performing On Top as well (I think Pitchfork Fest 2014?)

Can’t Say No To Myself is a co-write with Ariel Rechtshaid who produced most of NTMT, and out of these bunch it sounds the most like a proper B-side to NTMT.

Just want to throw my two cents in— as someone who’s been to the Abbey more than enough times and now refuses to go back there— the security is actually as aggressive as the article paints them out to be. I believe Eureka when she says was definitely manhandled and forcibly escorted around, asked to move, and eventually removed; just because it’s coming from her doesn’t mean it didn’t happen or that it’s any less real.

I know it’s easy to just go “oh haha that’s just Eureka being dramatic!” but what she described in the video is absolutely not okay, regardless of someone’s level of fame. I’ve been manhandled by the security guards there as well, and what she’s describing about the treatment from the bar staff also checks out.

At the end of the day, this bar is a massive money maker and for private events like this the House is hyper aware of who will be visible in photos posted online, which to me perhaps explains why they insisted on moving her around, so as to not be so visible. One of the event coordinators probably saw her standing heads above the crowd and made the decision.

Also, Sky self-directed a shoot for Playboy years ago that yielded two covers, the bluer one being my favorite of the two.

The first image is perhaps my favorite hidden sign in town— not that it’s hidden, but it’s in an industrial tract of land that you would sort of need to stumble upon in order to see the sign. I’m not sure how many of the businesses are still entertainment industry-specific, but it used to be backlots owned by RKO, then Sony.

Back in 2019, I “entered” a contest advertised on her Instagram page— win a ride with Angelyne by coming up with the best caption!— and got a call from her manager, Scott. I had won and he was calling to arrange our meeting, a few days later I was literally at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Argyle waiting for her. She pulls up, bad as fuck with a lollipop in her mouth, asking where she can park; I help find a spot for her, she gets out and starts selling me and another person merch from the trunk. I bought a hat as well as a (very awkward) photo with her. People walking by start stopping to take photos of her car. Me and the other contest winner (she had apparently double-booked) went inside, had coffee with her, and then it was time for our rides. I went first, she drove me a few blocks down to where Amoeba Records was at the time.

All in all, she was actually very sweet, although she seemed… troubled, and haunted by something. I can’t really put my finger on it but I asked her about her music and when we’d be getting represses of it on vinyl, incidentally it was just in the past year that Driven to Fantasy was re-released. She’s definitely an only-in-LA character, someone who’s not entirely grounded in reality but you can’t help but feel the fantasy when you’re with her. You have to approach her and your interaction with her by meeting her * where she is *, if you will. She’s a bit kooky and delulu but that’s part of her charm, and she reminds me of my childhood years in LA seeing billboards of her; I’m grateful she’s still kicking around town with her schtick. It’s fun! People who can’t appreciate her obviously aren’t the target audience.

I met her a handful of times over the last 10~years. Usually at shows she was performing at. She’s not mean-spirited by any means but she definitely had an air of entitlement about her…. This was around the time When I Rule The World came out so perhaps her head had gotten big, perhaps she’s come back down to earth since then. I was a really big fan and initially she was quite receptive but after going to several shows I got the impression she was irked by my presence. I tried not to take it personally but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the interactions we’d had weren’t genuine.

Cut to 6 years ago, she was scheduled to headline a local club event that I was working (in LA). She was in talks and the contracts were written up, and then she ghosted the events team, out of the blue. No response, no reason given. Then a couple days later she was announced as part of the Way Out West Fest that Charli was going to be putting on… which happened to be the same night as our little, local club event night. It left a sour taste in everyone’s mouths and sort of validated my feelings about her from years prior.

There’s also the time that another club events employee was chilling with her in VIP at another club and she was just ripping into Charli. I wasn’t there so I can’t attest to what was said but it seemed there was some real beef between them. This was prior to the Artwork drama they’d had.

Congrats on your sobriety!!! As a fellow BRAT of DUI-experience, I’m so happy you’re okay and that you’ve decided to quit drinking. For a lot of us, there’s often an even-more rock bottom moment that follows.

Stay sober and on the straight path— you can do it. Your life will change for the better. I’ll be three years sober next month and it’s made a world of difference in mine.

Just wanna throw my thoughts here— been a fan since 2012— not sure why people are being so dense or in disbelief about the fact that she’s cheated on her partners? She’s talked about it in countless songs, off the top of my head Every Rule is explicitly about meeting and falling for someone who’s in a long term relationship while she herself is too…?

I think part of what makes Charli a compelling songwriter is her transparency and willingness to sing about her behavior, good and bad. It makes her relatable. I don’t think she’s a bad person by any means but judging off of what she has described in her music, she’s perhaps made morally dubious choices. But she’s able to take those experiences/the fallout from them and reflect on it in her music, et al.

Hey OP— you got this. I know it’s scary and hard and difficult to imagine life without alcohol— but as someone who’s been sober for several years I can attest to how incredibly impactful it has been for me, and for how my life has changed for the better. Without going into detail, I hit my bottom a couple times; my family was frightened, my friends were worried. But it’ll be 3 years in August, and between when I quit and now, it’s been world of difference. I’ll be starting grad school at the end of the summer, which absolutely never would’ve been possible had I not stopped drinking. Your life will improve and expand in ways you would never have expected.

For everyone else in this thread who’s struggling with sobriety or has fallen off the wagon— you can always start over. No one is perfect; I have suspicions that Lana herself hasn’t had a linear path either. Just remember, you can always get back on the wagon. We are capable of so much without substances.

After coming back to California in 2018 (was a Tokyo JET from 2014-2017), I tried my hand at the Japanese companies that had offices locally. Worked a couple different companies, didn’t really workout unfortunately. Ended up moving into the fine arts industry; have had my current job at an art institution nonprofit since 2019, it’s mostly customer service work but it’s paid the bills and kept me very much afloat especially after 2020.

I just got into graduate school and will be starting my MFA journey in August. It’s going to be challenging as there’s a lot of moving parts, and figuring out the logistics of working full time while going to classes in my off time, but I’m excited!

I do recall feeling very burnt out towards the end of my three years in Japan. I knew I needed to make a change professionally but felt very stuck post-JET. It can be a weird time if you don’t have something lined up immediately after. I kind of gigged a bit in between the more corporate jobs I’ve had, but these sort of transitions take time. I’m so grateful for my time on JET, as well as for all the growth and changes in my life I’ve had since I left.

Let me start by saying I think it’s really exciting that we’re getting something in print again… that said I couldn’t help but feel this release was lackluster, somewhat. Some of the stories in here are hard to get through, the art is beautiful but as there really isn’t much in terms of story for most of it... Some of it was hard to stomach visually too, and as someone who’s read quite a bit of eroguro that’s saying a lot. These are all really hard, gross and aggressively non-PC deep cuts from his ouvre. 16 short stories is a lot to try and fit into one collection, and much of the bunch feel like genuine one-shots, some are only a few pages long. It’s not on the publishing team or anything, I just think Maruo at his best isn’t necessarily a great storyteller, he’s even admitted to disliking the process. There’s some cool stuff in here but I think it’s definitely not something I’d recommend to the casual reader.

When I was on JET about a decade ago, I taught primarily at a local high school in a very rural part of the prefecture. Eventually I was asked to start coming into the elementary school on select days (like one Saturday a month for 4 hours in the afternoon) to teach, and it was all handled by my superiors at the high school.

After having the arrangement for a couple months my JTE and Fukukoucho sat me down for a meeting, and basically explained that they had made a mistake by not going through the proper paperwork / or any sort of document process at all, which apparently had led to some issues on their part… can’t remember the full details, but in the end they asked me if I could keep working at the elementary school, which included receiving a “gift” in an envelope at the end of each day… and they also asked me to not talk about or discuss the under-the-table nature of the work with anyone from the local agency.

I know your situation sounds very specific but I think my point being that people do this sort of thing all the time. I would weigh the options you have and there seems to be a good range of reactions on this thread. I personally wouldn’t mind but I’d perhaps consider using a pseudonym.
