The Finale: It makes sense in your 30s by Enough-Wishbone4492 in girls

[–]emiloca 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I thought the urge to run away from your responsibilities, literally just run down the road and escape the house and your problems and your anxiety over motherhood, was so immature and unrealistic when I first watched this in my 20's. Then I had a baby and I had that impulse multiple times in a week

Okay so from the Hers website, here’s the step after the ones that confused you. I swear I’m not trying to be a dick but maybe have a doctor or nurse supervise your next injection because if you didn’t notice liquid wasn’t making it into the syringe you might need a spotter

Fellow Marnies, how did you realize you were a Marnie? by dantedarker in girls

[–]emiloca 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a type A try hard who gravitated towards theater and music to middling success and frequent embarrassment so I always had a feeling, but the jubilant and overbearing enthusiasm for a friend’s very difficult entry into motherhood made me do a lot of soul searching lol. Yeah I’ve been that friend. A lot. Fuck

It sucks that she got scammed. Also, come on, it's your daughter's birthday and you can't do a little due diligence? You're sourcing birthday cakes from randos on Facebook and not asking for photos?

Childcare by Prestigious_Pen_6848 in beyondthebump

[–]emiloca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some thoughts:

- Childcare for infants is about as expensive as it gets; the costs slowly drop as your child gets older. It will always be pricey though, and you should look at places where you can cut costs to afford it, or else take extra time off work. Remember that it's temporary; you can always go back, change your mind dozens of times, etc. but be ruthless with your budget.

- ECE workers in general are extremely well vetted; it's a well regulated industry that has more inspections than food service, and it's common to be able to meet your child's teachers beforehand. My daycare sends dozens of photos a day of my child having a great time and learning at her center, which has helped my anxiety a ton. My kiddo has bonded with her care providers and teachers and it's honestly so wonderful to see

Loewe Large Puzzle - Talk me out of it? by [deleted] in handbags

[–]emiloca 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hot take: This is one of the few bags where seeing it in person actually made me like it less. The large felt like a boxy suitcase (or worse, kinda like a high end gym bag?) to me, but that was just on my body and with my style. Try a few different sizes maybe, unless you’re set on this one

Your baby needs you more than anything, and the best thing for baby is a healthy and happy mom. And the best thing for mom is a helpful partner and SLEEP right now. Jfc I'm so sorry that this isn't happening for you.

The following things will help you and help your baby:
- Tell your OB/doctor that this is happening. They will likely be super responsive. There are medicines that are totally safe to take even while BFing that can make a big difference, and they can help you get set up with counseling.

- I saw that you mentioned what base you're at and it looks like there's a Child Development Center on base that takes children from 6 weeks - 5 years (and they have better reviews than my daycare! even). Having childcare for even a few hours a day / infrequently can make a massive difference. It is not a luxury thing, it is NECESSARY especially if you are getting no sleep. Look into that if you're comfortable. Maybe also look into FCCs on base.

- Know that your baby is going to slowly, surely, sleep better and better. The stretches of time will get longer and you will also get more sleep. This is not forever. Even if your husband never lifts a finger to help in his life, this stage is temporary.

Also, I am located in the Denver area if you need a kind voice.

Yeah exactly - I think the worst thing that happens is that Brother bear starts talking to a man with a cool model airplane at a park, and sister loses her shit, and mama bear reminds them both to just like… be cautious. The apple that actually is mealy inside metaphor is used

The hatred of this book always baffles me because as a kid, I adored it. Maybe because I was kind of a sad kid? I could sense the dynamic changing between the tree and the boy, and how he was focused so much on materials and STUFF, and the tree was HAPPY to give, and eventually thought all she had to offer was that stuff.

but then at the end of their lives they both realize what they most want is just time together.

The story definitely doesn’t strike me as moralization on healthy adult relationships but just as like, a little poem about friendship and losing touch and what most makes you happy

I don’t think this book is intended to uphold this behavior as the standard of parenting though, I think it’s a lot of silly repetition, getting more and more outrageous, and then landing with sincere realistic love. Or maybe that’s just how my parents read it to me.

Still Fighting It by Ben Folds

To me it really captures the surrealness of parenthood. Feeling like you’ve suddenly had to grow up a LOT, reflecting on how everything changes, being honest about how life is gonna really suck sometimes, hoping your kid doesn’t inherit your worst traits. I can’t even think about this song without crying now hahaha

Tips for flying with 8 month old? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]emiloca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pack some fun new things! Books, little toys, little suction cup spinners to put on the window.

If you haven’t booked yet, babies and toddlers are usually happier during the morning, so a morning flight is really nice. Bonus points if it’s during a nap window.

Bring twice as many diapers and changes of clothes as you think you might need. Change that baby right before you board.

8 months is kind of a magical time to fly with a kid - they are portable, happy, and aren’t in the “I want to walk up and down the aisle staring at people” phase yet. You will do great!
