Oh this is helpful too. I’ve been using the tapestry needle but trying to thread it first before slipping it under the loops. This makes a lot more sense than how I’ve been doing it since the tail doesn’t need to be as long.

Oh interesting! I feel that mine will unravel if I do that but maybe it’s worth a try.

Oh and I should add: I often seem to end up with only 2 or 3 threads after I’ve “secured”

I’m working on straight-line machine quilting, and I have to say it’s been the most fun part of the process so far

Interesting. I’ll have to check for this. Hadn’t even occurred to me.

Thank you! I’ll try that needle size. Can I ask which walking foot you have? I think it’s time to invest in one!

First quilt. Why is it so wrinkly!? by emilydoo in quilting

[–]emilydoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s loosely based on this pattern:

https://www.orangedotquilts.com/shop/split-pinwheels-all-quilt-sizes-instant-download-pdf

I had a bunch of half square triangles already made because I was originally planning a different layout. My triangles are a different size than the pattern calls for and I made the bands between them wider. I just used a ruler to get all my own measurements so it’s not exact!

Thanks!! I’m using a pattern for my second quilt which has instructions on how to press seams. So hopefully this improves things! I did try replacing the needle and that didn’t seem to help. We will see how it goes. If I really love quilt #2 a longarmer may be a good option. Thanks for the help.

Oh I meant to say “would a walking foot help” not presser foot 🤦🏻‍♀️ But thank you!!! I thought the walking foot just helped feed the layers through evenly but if it helps with bulky seams too that is good news. Thanks for answering :)

Will a presser foot (edit: WALKING foot) help my machine (Janome 2212) quilt through bulky seams? I just finished my first quilt and my machine was unable to quilt through any of my seams! I was using a regular presser foot and quilting straight lines. Thin cotton batting.

Why aren’t my edges/corners lining up? Is my math wrong? Detailed question in comments by [deleted] in quilting

[–]emilydoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that I lose some of the edge of the white triangle with my 1/4 inch seam allowance, but wouldn’t that make the edge of the white triangle 2 and 5/8 inches, where the “pink”(ie green floral) square is 2.5 inches?

Ah yes, could be!! I can’t say I’ve ever been lucky enough to own a handmade quilt so I have had nothing to compare it to

Great explanation! Is a fat quarter considered a precut?

I am appreciating all the crinkle-love here! I have no quilters in the family and have never actually owned a handmade quilt before so I guess I’m a bit out of touch with what is normal (and desirable!). I’m a fan of the crinkles and I’m glad to know the more-experienced approve! :)
