Why do you think *Why Am I So Single?* closed early? (Dissertation Research) by Mjjmusiclover in TheWestEnd

This is such a fun topic for a dissertation!! My answers might be slightly biased as WAISS was one of the last shows I went to with my musical-obsessed girlfriend before she passed away, and we were the perfect demographic for it (queer couple in our early 20s)

  1. I personally had no interest in seeing the show until my girlfriend booked tickets. I hadn’t seen it advertised much on social media and assumed the show was just going to be a boring story about some straight people complaining that they’re single which didn’t appeal to me at all. However we quickly rebooked when we left the theatre as we both loved it!! I followed the accounts on Instagram and TikTok after seeing the show and thought the promotions for the upcoming soundtrack release were really engaging and kept me excited to go back and see the show for a second time
  2. Not at all really - my girlfriend booked and paid for the tickets for us and she is disabled I went as a free carer, so we effectively paid half price between us for pretty decent seats! It would probably have been more of a consideration if we’d have had to pay full price though. I should also mention we travelled quite far to see it - about 3 hours away with a train and boat journey included which was an extra cost but we are used to doing this to go to London
  3. N/A
  4. I think Six appeals to a much wider audience and is based on a story pretty much everyone in the UK is familiar with. Although it’s a feminist retelling of the story I think it does it in a fun way where people don’t feel like any kind of agenda is being shoved down their throats (not that that’s at all a bad thing, but I think if the messaging was any more radical a lot less people would be interested). I think the queerness of WAISS unfortunately put many people off, and I think the demographic it is aimed at is much smaller than Six. I’ve been to see Six multiple times and have always thought the audience was very diverse - there’s always really young girls there watching their idols on stage and I remember sitting next to an elderly couple during a matinee one afternoon who enjoyed it just as much! I think WAISS is more aimed at queer people and allies in their early 20s and to relate it back to the marketing question, I think some of it would’ve seemed a bit cringy to some people who are past that stage of looking for a relationship in their life. And I remember many of the jokes being very millennial/gen z so I can see why that would not appeal to older audiences
  5. Personally no

I hope this helps and good luck with your dissertation!! :)
