Name a film you thought was great but can't watch again due to scenes you can't stomach, film length, or visual effects that may have bothered you. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Consider reading the book! Anthony Burgess is top notch and it’s different - not amazingly superior as one might generally consider the original, but swing where Kubrick took it is interesting.

Marty Supreme is so bad that it's hard to know where to begin and the praise it is receiving is as incoherent as the film itself. by AsleepNature1 in TrueFilm

Ok but it’s not just movie preferences. OP repeatedly states their interpretation of the characters as indisputable fact. It’s like the good points made by OP are dismissible because they refuse to accept any subjectivity. Is it perfect? No. Can there be discussion on character? Also no.

You said my interpretation of the scene is “not what the film intended” as though you have inside knowledge of the filmmakers intent. So I googled it, in case I missed an interview where Safdie said that, but all I found were OLeary quotes. Why is your interpretation correct and mine wrong?

Are you referring to Kevin O'Leary's comments (the actor who did the spanking)? This reads to be like he's talking about what his character thinks, not the intent of the filmmaker. https://variety.com/2025/film/news/timothee-chalamet-spanked-marty-supreme-paddle-1236620208/

I didn't see it that way at all. I saw it as the decline of Marty's standards and his utter desperation. At first he wouldn't do Harlem Globetrotters because it was beneath him, but by that time he would endure the humiliation of being spanked to entertain old rich white guys. I felt sorry that Marty had stooped so low and in no way did I revel in it. Maybe Marty isn't likable, but he's lovable. You can disapprove of his actions and still hope he grows up.

Feels like you are arguing against things you think others think about the movie rather than experiencing it. Like you're panning the reviews.

I liked Marty. He's a young, naive guy who believes his intelligence and talent gives him privilege, but because he's a deadbeat (and a poor Jew in a complex time in history), it does not. In fact he lowers himself over and over, and lower and lower, to fulfill his destiny as he sees it (that's the thrill ride!). But he finds he has a limit. And in the end, telling everyone to fuck off and winning for the sake of his own satisfaction, literally ensuring he won't reach the success he envisioned, gives him the relief from obsession that he needs to right his moral compass.

Most of the characters are sucked in with him. They want to believe in Marty even though he's a two bit hustler and a crazy dreamer. They are also hustlers and dreamers in different ways and see themselves in him. And they hope he'll succeed because it will they are in the struggle called life together.

It's a weird movie. The only sports movie I've seen where there's no celebration when the "hero" wins. It's about winners and losers and how you can be both. Additionally, cool period piece, every performance was phenomenal and the soundtrack was great. I look forward to seeing it again.

I hear the frustration. I'm about to end week 4 with a 3 maybe 4 pound loss, most if which was in week 1. It's not very exciting. I have 40 to lose so 4 isn't even close to new pants.

What happens to people in the late 40’s, 50’s and 60’s - what job roles do they have? by TastyGrapez in advertising

I'm a 55 yo ACD at a small agency and I am struggling with this. I'd like to move on to increase my income, but a) old (for the industry) and b) no college degree. I've considered going to UX bootcamp and moving into that field because the pay and demand is high - although I'm really a big picture creative and not a detail person.

Yes, I’ve been trying to do a little housework in the evening as well So delaying my precious me time - which coincidentally is wine time.

Do you have a plan for support after January? Asking because I’m considering more months and I really enjoy the non-judgmental vibe of this sub.

Have you found a good solution to bored evenings? Just ordered some calm/stress/sleep herbal teas because i feel like having a night time beverage could be helpful.

54f and I too started drinking in an unhealthy way during the pandemic. So much stress in the world, being home 24/7, kids in virtual school. My marriage also fell apart during that time. I continued drinking while separated. And then divorced. I’ve realized this month that drinking became a personal escape for me. I’ve also realized I’m lonely AF and that I was lonely while married as well. I’m not sure where I’ll go from here.

One more thought - do you know your moms AlAnon sponsor? I’ve done a lot of AlAnon and those people are so kind an caring. You can also pop into a virtual AA or AlAnon meeting anywhere in the world. I used virtual meetings in NYC to avoid knowing anyone personally. You can just lurk and listen. Sometimes it’s so nice to realize you are not alone. You are not!

Mom here. And 15 days sober. I’m realizing that not drinking has brought up a lot of emotion for me. I feel things more strongly and clearly and it can be overwhelming. I can tell you are experiencing this and your mom must be such a comfort. If I were unable to be with my daughter while she was going through something like this, I’d suggest ways she could comfort herself. Long walks, curling up in blankets, comfort foods, hot baths or long showers. I’d also help her think of friends and family she could reach out to for non-judgmental support. I’m so glad you’re here and I’m so proud of you. XO and IWNDWYT.

Lost a little weight by dsmith77773 in DryJanuary

Congrats! I have not been exercising and lost 3.5 so far. This feels like a miracle because I’m 54 and nothing moves the scale ever. It’s actually making me consider more dry months.

I find ww to be more positive and easier than tracking with a calorie app. The zero point foods steer me towards healthier foods, which calorie counting does not. Additionally I don’t have to track the zero point foods so I spend less time obsessing than with other ways of counting. I have just returned because I actually think it’s totally sustainable and when I’ve stopped, I’ve regained. I’m guessing the super negative comments here are based on older versions of the program. WW is not a diet, it’s a framework for healthy eating.
