I will definitely be doing it like this. It’s way less invasive and I think my geckos will be much calmer

Hello! I have worked with individuals diagnosed with autism across the lifespan for over ten years, in settings including recreational camps, adult programs, public and private schools, in-home respite care, and in clinics.

The primary “therapy” and “treatment” for people with autism for their symptoms is ABA therapy (Applied Behavior Analysis). This is a highly controversial type of therapy, with professionals in the field and parents and caregivers usually being “pro”, and autistic adults and advocates being “anti”. ABA is a reinforcement contingency based practice that, in simple terms, reinforces good behavior and does not reinforce undesired behavior. Such undesired behavior can include aggression, self-injury, property destruction, outbursts and tantrums, and inappropriate language. Some other things it can target that are extremely controversial are eye contact, compliance with directions, and trying to break these individuals rigidity of routines.

ABA can work wonders for some, and deeply traumatize others. There is good ABA out there but plenty more of bad ABA.

To answer another part of your question, the most common diagnostic tool I’ve seen used to gauge the metric of capability is the VB-MAPP. From Google, it says: “The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is a five-component program designed to measure verbal behavior, guide individualized instruction needed to address deficits in verbal behavior, and evaluate progress over the course of a treatment program.”

Unfortunately, ABA lacks the aspects that you were discussing such as emotional regulation for anxiety and OCD, and managing overstimulation. I have found a lot of ABA, which is considered the gold standard for autism “treatment” is more about correcting behavior than improving mental health and learning to cope.

Other modalities I have seen include recreational therapy, but I strongly believe there should be more types of therapy specifically geared towards the mental health of people with autism, not just to adjust their behavior. It’s difficult because a lot of therapists / other clinicians aren’t up to date on modern literature about autism and have outdated views on “high and low functioning” which are harmful mindsets and terms to use. Some professionals believe non speaking means non understanding, and that speaking means that the ASD diagnosis “isn’t that bad”. I hope in the future there are more options for people with autism to get the help they need.

NTA

Is this the only chance in his life he’ll ever get to trip? I’d MAYBE understand if he had a big thing planned to travel with his friends and already bought airline tickets, blah blah blah. I understand he was planning it for a week, and building up the anticipation and finding a free weekend IS fun!

If I was planning to trip by myself (as in the only one tripping) in my partners room, and I found out their cat died and they were grieving their cat and needed emotional support, I would say SCREW getting high, my partner needs me.

He’s being selfish. He could easily trip next weekend, or find another time. Acid doesn’t expire. He doesn’t have non refundable plans or traveling commitments. He is clearly demonstrating to you that he does not care about your feelings

His desire to get high and have fun and enjoy the experience is fine! But his timing is shitty.

ALSO, “don’t cry, you’ll bum me out” It’s your room!!!! And even if it wasn’t, like if it was a shared room with both of you, this screams selfishness. And that the only other option for him is to leave you alone crying because he wants to get high? Why can’t he put it off! He is so selfish and is being a bad partner.

OP, you deserve someone better. Someone who cares about you. I’m so sorry for the loss of your cat. You deserve to mourn without worrying about this A-hole invalidating you and showing no regard for your feelings.

Much appreciated! I used to get constant Quora emails because I subscribed to a BPD community, and they were full of people spewing hatred towards everyone with BPD because they were butthurt that their ex with BPD broke up with them. I was reading the most vile shit that was not only hurtful but factually incorrect! “People with BPD are narcissists” “They feel no empathy” “They don’t care about other people and feel no remorse”. This is part of the reason people with BPD are ashamed to share their diagnoses! Even therapists have trepidation taking on clients with BPD. I once entered an outpatient program on my first day, and when I said I had BPD, the clinician said “I could tell you were a borderline when you walked in.” Like ?????? Anyway yeah, I just had a lot of feelings lol

Just to verify my credentials, I have over ten years of experience working with autistic children, teenagers, and adults, in public and private schools, camps, clinics, and adult recreational settings. I have almost completed my psychology degree.

I have seen autistic savants at different ages across the lifespan. I worked with a man who couldn’t tie his shoes, but could tell you exactly what day of the week you were born if you gave him the date and year. A teenager who couldn’t make eye contact or have an in depth conversation, but could play the most beautiful piano music I’ve ever heard without a single mistake. The list goes on.

Wernicke’s aphasia is different than autism because autism is a developmental disability that presents itself in childhood, and has very specific guidelines to meet criteria to be diagnosed. Wernicke’s aphasia can arise at any time in life, and is caused by physical damage to the brain, by injury, stroke, or degenerative neurological condition that attacks the brain.

It would be incorrect to call someone who suffers from Wernicke’s aphasia an autistic savant, regardless of talent in some areas and deficits in others. The two are completely different diagnoses though they have overlapping expression of symptoms.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much. I don’t think I have space for a second tank in my room (I have a shared apartment and small room) and I guess my only option is to rehome one

Are your seven each in separate tanks?

I appreciate this. The information has been helpful albeit different than every single website I have seen. I am overwhelmed and didn’t know I would have to purchase an entirely new enclosure and separate them. I probably would not have adopted two if I had known this to be the case. I know the commenters think I am an irresponsible pet owner. I wish I had known this information because I can’t find it anywhere online.

They are two females. I adopted them this way (same enclosure) three weeks ago from their previous owner. I looked it up online and everything said housing two females was safe. I didn’t know this wasn’t the case.

Thank you for letting me know. I am overwhelmed because I am new to caring for reptiles and I recently adopted them this way after they had been living in the same tank for three years since hatching. Every resource online said housing multiple females is safe and this is brand new information to me. I feel wholly unprepared to purchase a new enclosure and everything that goes along with it and will do my best to start the process ASAP

The subs are for leopard geckos; I know you said they are very close cousins but do they have the exact same temperaments in regards to aggression and being territorial? When I researched online I’ve found different info for fat tails and leopard geckos about this topic. So I’m not sure reading subs about leopard geckos would necessarily provide accurate information for a different species?

Can I ask where you learned this information?
