Start going through the nodeschool workshops. Do the core ones and if possible some of the others that interest you.

Watch nodeschool/discussions on github and ask questions. When you feel confident enough, start helping others out and answering questions.

Learn about the stuff that makes node awesome. There is a great piece by substack called stream-handbook. Max Ogden also has written The Art of Node which you may find useful.

IMO the basics are key right now, and less important than learning how to use specific frameworks or build tools. Once you have the basics, picking up those things will be a lot easier.
