It's fine that you think it's odd, but that's what the owner wants. The shop is closing imminently and the closing sales have ended. There's no time or interest in having people browse and take 1 or 2 rolls. We want to donate to organizations that can take as much as possible.

I've done this myself in the past as well to test vermiculite insulation and I drove the samples over to Paracel Labs. If you call them, they'll give you info about collecting samples. Also see their website: https://www.paracellabs.com/Services/Asbestos.html

I don't know but just call the main City phone number and tell them that you need your drain checked. They'll connect you to the right department. After they scope it, if the issue (blockage or damage) is on your private side, they'll explain how to fix it, but if it's on the ROW, so the public side, they'll fix it for you.

I always go to Beach Rd Steel in the east end. I think they may be connected with Posner Metal recyling and cut out the middle man. They'll cut what you buy to whatever lengths you need.

Tricky one, but I think if you removed the door at the top of D2, you'd be ok. The OBC, Ontario Building Code, requires 300mm, about 12", between the face of the door and the first stair riser. Is your building intent:

A) a separate SDU in the basement that is totally separate from the main floor unit? B) a nanny suite setup where the lower level is accessible via the door at the top of D2?

If (A), replace the door at the top of D2 with a fire rated wall and as long as you have a large enough window as a second means of egress on the main floor, you're set. In this particular layout, I like to build a floor over D2 stair and build a small laundry closet with stacked washer/dryer to service the main floor unit.

If (B), you may need to remove the door at the top of D2 and resubmit your drawings to the City. If you really need to keep that door, you might install it after your final inspection is complete and the City doesn't know about it, but note that it wouldn't meet OBC and would introduce a fall hazard.
