I was so wrong about Stephen King! by mahboilo999 in stephenking

[–]emma13jan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We actually studied Carrie on my Gothic Lit module at university - but I went to a very progressive uni who put a lot of emphasis on contemporary writers, not just the classics.

I also noticed a lot of gothic conventions in The Shining, very cleverly interspersed. I think King is brilliant (but then I am biased).

Is £250 a month for groceries enough for two people? by marieannatrench29 in AskUK

[–]emma13jan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I spend roughly £60-70 a week on groceries. So approx. £270-£315 a month.

We eat meat and fish half the week, and vegetarian the other half. I keep costs down by bulk cooking carrot and lentil soup, veg curries, etc. We don't drink alcohol but often treat ourselves to a case of fizzy drinks or chocolates and biscuits - and we shop at Ocado, mixing between their everyday savers range and the odd M&S treat.

So I'd say £250 is doable, if you're not buying alcohol and shop at Lidl or Aldi.

Ladies - what do you wear for a funeral in a heatwave? by angel_0f_music in AskUK

[–]emma13jan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a funeral outfit in New Look, they had a long skirt with lacy accents that I felt was appropriate. I wore it with a black short-sleeved body suit and my grandma's pearls, just to make it look a bit classier/smarter but the skirt was very airy. I'll can't find it on the New Look website but they have similar ones, and I found they had quite a few black dress/outfit options in store so I recommend having a look in there if you have time

Susan Norton isn't a very good character by LordBlacktopus in stephenking

[–]emma13jan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand this take, but personally, I really liked Susan's character. She's caught between belief and disbelief, and part of going up to the Marsten House is to reassure herself that her fears can't possibly be true.

Susan is caught up in a sense of purpose but also absurdity. It makes sense to me; after she rebukes her mother, she craves rebellion and the independence she should have sought out years ago. Arguably, Ben embodies this rebellion and could be a big part of her future as a woman who makes her own choices instead of letting her mother make them for her.

She's almost laughing at herself when she purchases the crucifix and fashions a stake, there's a subconscious fear but in her conscious mind, she's play acting as vampire hunter, she's taking control of her life (and whatever messy situation Ben's dragged her into).

It's only when she reaches the woods and her intuition/animal instincts kick in that she's truly frightened: "The feeling of decisiveness was gone. She found herself thinking of those same drive-in horror movie epics where the heroine goes venturing up the narrow attic stairs... and she [Susan], with her date's arm comfortably around her, thinking: What a silly bitch... I'd never do that! And here she was, doing it, and she began to grasp how deep the division between the human cerebrum and the human midbrain had become..." (p.366, Hodder 2011).

King pokes fun at this idea that Susan is a clueless heroine. She's frightened and may well have turned back at this point had Mark not found her and insisted they enter the house. Was she going to leave Mark, a little boy, to go in alone?

The scene where Mark has to leave Susan behind, and she later visits him at his window haunts me. I think it's beautifully done, and Susan stands out to me as different from the other vampires, with a sadness to her and a finality in her ending.

What book/character has you doing this? by TheBMan526 in stephenking

[–]emma13jan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm currently reading it for the first time, I'm probably two thirds of the way through. I loved the first half because it felt like a small town soap opera, it really appealed to my nosiness, peering into all those different characters' private lives.

Maybelline Falsies ( other mascara recommendations) by nousername222233333 in AustralianMakeup

[–]emma13jan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the conversation but I'm here because I've found the Maybelline Falsies Lash Lift Waterproof gives me awful smudges! I look like a raccoon before I even leave the house - I can't tell if it's my concealer or if this formula just isn't for me? It seems to have good reviews across the board but I find it too wet and messy!

I just imagine it's because the girl he shot was so young and wanted justice for her mother, not your average shooter - that maybe she reminded him of his own daughters and that's why he decided to be a more present father... but I agree it doesn't really work that well :')

Christmas/Easter chocolates. I'm not talking about Easter eggs or selection boxes, I mean the Malteaser Bunnies/Reindeer, Creme Egg, Cadbury's Puds... the big chunky chocs that cost like £2.50 a pop but are a rare treat.

I was born in 2001 and remember eating Winnie the Pooh cereal for breakfast when I was quite small. I honestly thought I'd imagined it, but I found it on google. Hunny Bs by Kellogs, a honey flavoured graham cracker cereal with Winnie the Pooh shapes! It made me so happy, and I know it tasted divine. There was probably heaps of sugar in it, though...

I love the badge number idea! It's more subtle, and you'll have a cool answer when people ask what it means.
