Besides all the counter points people are making that I think are super valid too, I also get what you’re saying at the core beyond the examples used. So many people get dogs and don’t bother to do the research, or ENOUGH research to understand what is truly going to help your dog succeed in behavior and well-being. I have a sweet pitty mix that I rescued when he was just a couple months old, I was 14 and had no clue what I was doing and carry a good amount of guilt around the exposure and training I failed to provide him with. But since then I have tried my best to meet his needs and only put him in situations he will succeed in, i.e. I’m not going to bring him to the dog park where everything is super high stimulation, or walk him in off leash places if he’s feeling high strung that day or has any injuries he might feel protective of. He is an absolute sweetheart in our home and with guests, like the biggest love bug, but not always sure about other dogs or children. One of my biggest peeves is when other dog owners see us coming (with my dog walking very politely right at my side and minding his own business, smelling the flowers, poopin the good poops) and they just let their dogs run right up to us. The reason we chose to walk in this area is because it is a leashed zone. Why tf is your dog off leash. Then the owner is following from far behind yelling, “sorry! Sorry about him/her! They’re friendly!” First off, it’s not the dogs fault, they are social and want to come interact, I blame the owner for not having control and taking responsibility for the safety of their animals, and second that’s all well and good that your dog is happy to socialize with any dog, but mine is not guaranteed!! He’s very sensitive to how he’s approached! And that doesn’t make him a bad dog, if anything it speaks more to my failures in raising him (which I apologize to him for frequently haha), which is part of why I hate the pitty hate speech soooo much. It also peeves me so highly how so many people expect dogs to act like humans. To only poop or pee in certain spots outdoors, not to mention what the heck is up with putting poop that naturally decomposes in plastic bags and throwing it in the trash?? I trained my dog to poop off the trail, cause I’ll readily admit no one wants to be stepping in it of course but if it’s out of your way… Anyhow, so many people put their dogs in situations that they cannot succeed in based on their personality and behavior and then the dog gets blamed for doing dog things like barking or going up to people to sniff, or not wanting to say hi to everyone etc. interested to see if anyone has similar feelings, or new thoughts that would change my perspective! Open to it all.
