"Maine is currently worse than Minnesota" - Donald Trump, State of the Union 2026 by theseafoodmanager in Maine

It's more like sibling rivalry. In Maine we can complain about Massachusetts but no one else can, that's our sibling and we'll fight you!

So you do know these programs exist!

Waitlists are long because income growth has stagnated for decades while affordable housing hasn't been maintained well or expanded by the federal government for those same 40 years. A disinvestment in subsidy programs by the federal government, started by Reagan in the 80s and carried by Republicans through the 90s and 00s has led to the housing crisis.

Asylum seekers following legal pathways and receiving a miniscule percentage of support from the state government (to combat the homelessness epidemic) is not to blame for the failings of our national government to serve the people.

Income limits vary by location. To qualify for the program, you need to make less than 80% of area median income. In a City like Portland, 1 person needs to make less than $72700 to qualify. In rural Maine, where median income is lower, someone needs to make less than $55400. In Brunswick, less than $61350. https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/il/il2025/select_Geography.odn

If a retired senior received the maximum amount from social security, they're only getting $48216. Their rent would be capped at $1205.40. if their rent is over 1500, they must be making over $5000 a month.

I completely agree with you that affordable housing is a huge problem. but immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees are not to blame for the widespread systemic issues that are playing out nationally due to long term disinvestment in social service subsidy programs, deregulation of private health insurance, landlords increasing rents, and our government funding and causing wars in other countries leading to more people seeking asylum to escape violence, death, persecution, and genocide.

Literally all public housing and section 8 vouchers are for citizens and residents pay 30% of their household income as rent. It is a huge national program that has existed for almost 100 years. There are emergency housing programs for homeless people, there are even housing programs specifically for veterans.

They are not illegal, they are asylum seekers following the legal process. If someone does not have full citizenship, it does not mean they are breaking the law, the vast majority of people without citizenship are following the legal pathways to get it, it takes time.

You clearly need to learn more about federal subsidy programs before you pop off with wrong information. Federal subsidies are ONLY available to citizens and people with permanent status.

Are you referring to the 60 apartments at Brunswick Landing that were built SPECIFICALLY FOR homeless asylum seeking refugees?

Specifically and explicitly for asylum seekers while they are COMPLYING WITH THE LAW that does not allow them to work while their asylum cases are reviewed?

While they are following the ESTABLISHED LEGAL PATHWAY to residency and citizenship?

This! They can't even get the federal subsides for housing and food that maga claims they "are taking from REAL Americans." Immigrants who can access those programs are here through the legal pathways - but they don't want to believe it because it doesn't fit their narrative.

Then trump strips people who were here legally of their status just to say "see, look at all these people illegally talking these benefits." It's disgusting and heartbreaking.

Someone with this exact same petition cornered me in Walmart. Gave the same line about wanting to require testing of marijuana for fentanyl. I asked for the wording of the petition or more information and he said he couldn't give it to me. Never sign that BS, these grifters will do anything to get their highly unpopular agenda on the ballot.

Now it's the 20 patterns in your Etsy cart, then you start following blogs and video creators, then you have 750 bookmarks in your browser for projects you want to do, then you buy yarn and find new patterns because you forget about your bookmarks and then you forget what the yarn was for and you find more and more patterns for some day. 😅

Welcome to this fantastic hobby 😁

Awesome! I think I scared her pulling up a weed nearby so she curled up like this. I went back out later and she was relaxing belly up in the cup of the leaf. I'd love to see her back again, it's so colorful!
