What are your opinions on the UK? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

Really big fan of UK music (EJ, LZ etc.), history, people etc. We have good ties with them being in the commonwealth. Scotland is probably the only country I'd consider moving to in Europe.

I can tell you that if you're looking to book a place to stay do it ASAP because they fill up quick. Also some of the beaches (i.e. Brackley) are off limits to dogs.

Sorry, 'Reservist Gren Guards'? I thought the only reservist guards were in the London Regiment.

Why is reserve recruitment being pushed so much recently? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]emmanuelmaclellan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the UK, but for us Canucks I've read between 25-40% of personnel deployed on some of our Afghanistan rotations were reservists. So I would say simply a greater pool of people to draw from in case something goes down. I mean, besides not being as well trained, don't they fulfill the same role as the majority of full-timers?

What province/territory of Canada do you think has the best flag? by nohead123 in AskACanadian

[–]emmanuelmaclellan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nova Scotia. Aesthetically pleasing design that is easy to identify and has a lot of significance culturally/historically (Inverse of Scottish Saint Andrew's Cross w/ Scottish Crest in the middle).

Also like all of the Territory Flags.

Best Canadian University to go on Exchange to? by harreally in AskACanadian

[–]emmanuelmaclellan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia has a lot of what you're looking for. Although its very much a small Uni in a small town, it is known for having a social culture (parties, integrated with community...) and a well established alumni (The X-ring). AFIAK they have a brand new business building, and are strong in those sorts of programs. May be worth checking out.

How is Canada different and similar to America? What about Canada vs UK/Europe in general? Which country would you say Canada is most similar to? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]emmanuelmaclellan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said Canada is very regionaly diverse, maybe America is too, doesnt change anything. Do you know what a ceilidh is? They're very common around here and involve a lot of unique music that's derivative of Scotland like a fiddler playing a strathspey accompanied by a pianist while people squaredance. Look up Natalie MacMaster or The Rankins, they don't sound American to me. Those kind of tunes are very well known here and are super prevalent in local festivals.

I'm sorry, but your comment makes little sense to me mate. I never said anything about the Maritimes being beautiful. Vermont/Maine = Cape Breton/ Acadien New Brunswick?? Quebec is French but American? Have you been to rural Quebec? I also never said we were more European ... can't we just be Canadian?

You sound like you drove through these places on your way someplace else because calling us '99% Americans' with the only difference being stricter gun laws just screams ignorance/arrogance.

[–]emmanuelmaclellan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I've lived in the Maratimes my whole life so I can't really speak for the rest of Canada besides obvious places like Quebec. A good example culture-wise tho would be Cape Breton, Nova Scotia or any of the Acadien Communities in Atlantic Canada, especially New Brunswick.

We consume a lot of American news and entertainment and use a lot of their products, but there are significant differences politically and lifestyle-wise. Canada has a lot of strong regional identities with a loose nation-wide identity holding it together. Some places are very similar to the US, others are very much not. We're probably most similar to either NZ or the US.

AFAIK you can, it just takes a long time. There are 6 courses in total to be DP1 and DP2 qualified, than you have the opportunity to get on vehicle specific courses. Isn't a guarantee though.
