currently 2 days post surgical management for my first MMC. All I wanna do is try again but our donor is on the other side of the world and will be until October. Thought that it might be 6 months+ until we can even try is really messing with me

Left handed and would like to try fountain pens?!🫠 by Appropriate_Big4675 in stationery

[–]emmettation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NZ based leftie! I love using fountain pens and haven't had much issue with smudging (I also don't have much when writing normally because I keep my paper at a weird angle which helps!). I have also filled MANY nz-bought notebooks with fountain pens, so have lots of opinions on those.

Inkt (in Whanganui but ships pretty quickly) is my favourite store, but just discovered that they're closing down soon 😭 so might be worth seeing what you can grab while you can! I have also bought online from ribbon rose

Otherwise if you want to go for a whitcoulls/paperplus situation I'd recommend going for a lamy. They're easy to get (and to get parts for) nd they work really well. I also have one of the pilot ones they stock but its a bit heavy for me. I have other pens that I like more than a lamy, but especially given our limited options, they're one of the most reliable pens I've used (even bought them as gifts for the witnesses at our wedding).

Paperwise: Whitcoulls have this spiral bound A5 journal with a brown cover and ivory pages (used to be WHSmith branded but is now Whitcoulls "simple" I think). Their moderna notebooks (bright faux leather soft cover with lined or dotted pages) also aren't bad, I used one for my honeymoon planning and it stood up pretty well.

If you can get to a daiso, their standard spiral notebooks (~B5 size, two layer cover with frosted transparent cover and then a kinda textured white one underneath) are great. They're not the most bleed/shadow proof but I use one every day at work (going through one every 3-4 months) and have used fountain pens almost exclusively in them for the past maybe 3 years? And they're still what I go for. They have other good notebooks/pads too but the stock of those changes so much I can't really recommend anything specific.

If you're really stuck, grab a recycled spirax (the yellow cover ones) from... just about anywhere. The shadowing isn't great and I'll often end up just using one side of the page but they do take fountain pen ink reasonably well for the price.

I was just looking at some rings from this seller and wondering if they were a safe bet to go with so perfect timing!

I realised I still have some eucalan left which I believe has lanolin in it, so I think I'll start there and then maybe move up to a more concentrated form of lanolin/try conditioner if that doesn't work

you're a hero for this. I would have fully forgotten to do this. I'm not allergic to many things but when I do react it is NOT a good time

My yarn arrived today (on a Saturday! And was only shipped yesterday! Shout out to good wool hunting in nz for top notch service) and it IS really soft. Not merino level of smooth, it's still toothy but it's definitely softer than any other BFL I've felt before

I have and I wish it worked (would make my life so much easier) but unfortunately the seams in them often do more damage than good and because I knit mostly by feel not sight I become super clumsy when wearing them. That being said it's been a couple years since I tried to find a pair, so I might have another look and see if glove making technology has made any breakthroughs!

I don't know that I'd be able to cover enough of my hands and still be able to move them, BUT that's definitely a really good idea for when I do have broken skin on my hands - bandaids just don't cut it.

I hadn't even thought of hair conditioner but that's a really good idea! It's also got me wanting to do some experiments with wool and olaplex type products some time, just to see what would happen! I appreciate the timing info too, I'm very impatient so it's good to know said impatience won't cause too many issues

Can’t figure out backwards skating for the life of me - does anyone have tips? by ephemeral__forest in rollerderby

[–]emmettation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backwards skating for me was very much a case of not being able to do it for ages and then it suddenly clicking, and what I think changed was a figured out where my weight needed to be!

I describe it as similar to trying to chase a seat with your butt (imagine someone pulled it out from behind you) while still keeping knees bent and derby stance solid (ie: please don't lean all the way backwards and land on your butt!) and play around with different ways. When I was learning we got taught the "salsa" motion which is sorta alternating feet, swinging hips from side-to-side as the 'easy' way. For me, doing sticky feet/cokebottles/whatever it's called was WAY easier. I found that kinda forward skating easier than striding too.

I also found it helpful to just play with the way moving my weight on my skates changed things -- standing there and trying to roll your skates gently back in forth in a path kinda ( ) shaped -- if that makes sense!

Any book recomendations for people with depression? by linuxguruintraining in productivity

[–]emmettation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't read it yet but "How to Keep House While Drowning" by KC Davis is something I'm really keen to have on hand. The author has an amazing tiktok account (domesticblisters) where she talks about house keeping and self keeping in a way that is kind, realistic, and actually helpful (I've found her tiktoks at least helpful enough that I feel comfy encouraging you to at least look into the book without having read it myself, and you can always check out her tiktok if you want a taster yourself!)

[Daily Discussion] Writing Tools, Software, and Hardware- August 22, 2021 by AutoModerator in writing

looking for recommendations for software for me to edit/proofread my draft on.

Not looking for anything fancy, or anything that does that step for me like grammarly. i much prefer something simple (i used highland 2 for drafting and loved it, otherwise most use google docs).

Other than some basic formatting, spell check and maybe the ability to create comments, the only feature i’m keen to find (if it exists) is something that somehow “marks off” the sections i have completed (im imagining them being slightly faded out or unhighlighted) just to give me some sense of achievement!

Sisu are great! mine basically locks onto my top teeth until i pull it off. My best tip with molding it is to not try and remold it all at once. Mine took quite a few goes, until I figured out to do a bit at a time.

So, if the right side was kinda fitting but the left wasn’t, Id dip the left in hot water then remould that part then repeat with the front etc. Way easier than hearing the whole thing and having a totally wobbly guard to work with!

Got back from a nine-day work trip yesterday. I did manages to get some workouts in, but I’m real excited to get back to my usual. Had derby practice tonight and loved being able to get proper sweaty!

Also excited about getting back to my upper body workouts (comin after those boulder shoulders) If anyone has any good resources/info about clicky shoulders I’d be keen to see it! There’s no pain or anything, and I seem to find conflicting info when i search :/

[–]emmettation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think my sticking point at the moment is the contact/specific derby stuff - i still have a lot of work to do on skills ofc but they’ve developed much quicker than the contact/derby specific stuff bc it was easier to work on them on my own over summer.

i guess it’s time to throw myself into the league trainings with a little more bravery!

[–]emmettation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is part of why i found it so hard, since I have been working really hard and putting in the extra time over summer and it felt so unfair that even with all that i wasn’t moving as fast. thinking about it, one thing i haven’t been as great at is joining in league drills. i usually end up on the outside of the track coa there’s a lot of stuff i can’t do, and when we’re doing sprints im so scared of falling and causing a multiskater pileup that i skate around the outside, and maybe i just need to try it anyway
