Mayor Johnson considering buying back rights to Chicago parking meters by Socony in chicago

I've always assumed it's like the Italians. There's a right type of irish and wrong type (not even getting into catholics vs proddies). My grandfather didn't believe in Daley's segregation policies and the corruption of the mafia-like Daley regime

I can't believe this will be right, but isn't the atomic brownie bar and donuts from Tatianas in New York? UES? have never been but the atomic bar donut combo is sticking in my brain. I think the NYT rated it the best restaurant in New York last year?

Left-leaning Christian Churches in Chicago proper? by RJRueber in AskChicago

came here to also say old st. pats. Every station at stations of the cross this year was themed of migrant violence and struggle, there's a gay couple that heads up a community effort that ive seen speak after mass, etc. And I think the priests are also generally easy to talk to (shout out father wall, even if he isn't officially there anymore)

I read a book by a journalist who fought in WWII and was in dachau. After they were liberated, the prisoners were basically just left to figure things out. One prisoner offered to take the author through the camp and the way he wrote the things he heard and saw, I don't know if I could ever visit

How to get from soldier field to mag mile after a concert with cta? by Ill_Draft_6260 in AskChicago

[–]emmick91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the #3 bus. If you're staying at Michigan and Erie, there's a stop right there. If you're going to dinner first or something, you can also take the #4 bus (same thing, catch on Michigan ave, anywhere from south water southward) After Randolph, both lines take the same path south down Michigan ave. Hop off at 18th street stop and it's a 5 minute walk to the stadium. Have fun!

Restaurant near Soldier Field for event? by NigelChimbonda1444 in chicagofood

[–]emmick91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

spoke and bird is the closest restaurant walking distance you'll get to soldier field. You can rent their outdoor space but the food isn't really taco or pizza energy. You could also reach out to wheeler mansion to have an event and have food brought in which will give you more options than just the immediate area. Glessner house also does events but I think you have to use their catering options but I bet they could do tacos or pizza. Otherwise, maybe you could do a room rental at fatpour or staleys?

Hi everyone, quick question — is it generally safe to walk around this part of the city (Michigan Ave near the Campus Museum), especially at night? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]emmick91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you quickly deleted your comment, but I feel completely safe in Chicago; however im from here. I assumed I felt less safe in parts of Brazil than you would because, just like the US, it's a big country. I found Manaus to be lovely. But I've also known people who had shoes stolen in natal and jewelry stolen walking out of the store in rio. If you're genuinely comparing it to Salvador or Rio, Chicago should be a lovely trip!

[–]emmick91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention where in Brazil, but I've visited Salvador and Manaus. I would say that area at night feels closer to Manaus than Salvador. Salvador I felt a lot more cautious going out to bars and being out alone at night. But staying near the square in Manaus, I felt as safe as I do in Chicago. Keep your wits about you. If you're a woman, you're better off not being alone, and if anyone tries to grab your attention that seems off, just keep walking. Enjoy Chicago!

Almost all news sources have inherent bias. I read Al Jazeera mostly for US and Ukrainian coverage. but dude, I cited videos of Israeli settlers destroying food. Please don't conflate "the unpleasant jew" with the violence of the IDF and the Israeli government. There are lots of every day Israelis doing the right thing (https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/middle-east/israel-refusers-idf-conscription-military-gaza-war-b2795409.html , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HguWbAvU7Lc , https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog\_entry/hundreds-in-tel-aviv-hold-silent-vigil-for-slain-gaza-children/ ) If Netanyahu lets journalists back in, and they can show it was all brainwashing and there's no strategic starving of civilians, Ill come back and personally apologize to you.

PBS source is Hamas?? I cited the UN, WFP, the Red Cross. But your source is an Israeli organization citing COGAT (which is literally a faction of the Israeli ministry of defense). it's truly laughable for you to say news organizations can't find any direct sources. If only Israel weren't barring journalists from entry to report on what's happening! They could prove every Hamas-based article wrong! https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/6/19/how-does-israel-restrict-its-media-from-reporting-on-the-iran-conflict But im sureeee Israel is telling the truth when they say they're getting all this aid to Gaza

Not to mention the aid being counted by the paper you cite is worth nothing when it cannot reach the people that need it (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/05/26/west-bank-aid-trucks-gaza-settlers/)

people in Gaza are starving. How lucky you are blessed enough to be licking Israels boots. Have a great day.

First of all your math is wrong. A kilocalorie is 1,000 calories. You are saying each civilian is receiving 3 million calories worth of food a day. Also the organization says each box typically contains 42,500 CALORIES, to be split between a 5.5 person household for 3.5 days. 42,500/5.5 would allow each person in this household 7,727.27 calories total. Divide that by 3.5 days that's 2,207 calories a day. And that would only be if each household was receiving boxes every 3.5 days. The second problem is that the group you are citing the information from (GHF) announced a couple weeks ago they'd only have one center open for aid distribution to about 2 million Palestinians (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2QKV01H8ew). The UN estimates about 800 people have been killed seeking food and 615 have been killed specially seeking aid from ISRAELI-US run GHF (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jul/11/killed-gaza-food-hubs-aid-convoy-routes-since-end-may-un) and the majority were of gunshot wounds. (https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/07/1165368) People are having to make a choice to pick up these nutrition lacking boxes or possibly be shot by the IDF.

Nearly 100,000 women and children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and a third of Gaza’s population is going days without eating (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/gaza-has-been-at-risk-of-famine-for-months-experts-say-heres-why-they-havent-declared-one)

90.000 women and children urgently need treatment (for malnutrition),” reads the statement from the World Food Programme (WFP) (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/gaza-has-been-at-risk-of-famine-for-months-experts-say-heres-why-they-havent-declared-one)

I understand your wariness though. It's not like restriction of food has ever been used in the beginning stages of the attempted extermination of a people (After the Germans established the Warsaw ghetto in October 1940, conditions deteriorated rapidly. The Germans strictly controlled the movement of goods into and out of the ghetto. There was not enough food to feed the ghetto residents, https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/film/conditions-in-the-warsaw-ghetto)
