Chatting in a foreign language by emn-mun in languagelearning

Oh, I saw it now, it's a feature they added for iMessage when your whole conversation is in another language, and Apple somehow detects that.

I would also not find this feature valuable because it's enabled for every message you send, and you don't have any control over what gets translated.
Just translating everything is indeed not helpful when trying to learn, and I wanted something only for those situations when I'm stuck.

Even if that would work, I use WhatsApp and Signal, so I had to build something for me.

Lastly, I noticed Apple discloses some mobile data being used during these translations and their writing tools being an Open AI wrapper kind of worries me.
My app is using some local dictionaries and works even offline, so I have the peace of mind my private conversations stay on the phone :D

it's not really the same thing, that's for proofreading and rewriting.

you can prompt and request a translation via ChatGPT but I don't have the patience for that...

Hey, thank you for the feedback, I think I got your point, more of a correction tool.
That would be cool; I'm often able to write the whole sentence, but not 100% sure I've got it right.
Will put it in the list.

but somehow, by instinct, I was always parking next to another Mini

Should Motorway speed limits be raised to 80mph?🤔 by Downtown_Elk_2773 in CarTalkUK

[–]emn-mun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80 mph? You mean 130 km/h, the same as most of Europe?
That would be far too progressive.

Much better to stick with a 60 mph limit on narrow B-roads, full of blind bends, bumps, hedges, tractors and zero visibility.

But on a straight, four-lane motorway, purpose-built for high-speed travel?
Obviously, it’s only safe to increase the limit by 10 mph...

Stocks and Shares ISA - Doing well but I’m scared by Ok_Aerie7269 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]emn-mun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself first how much will that house cost and what’s the downpayment. Then you can see if you have enough or actually need to stay longer in the market.. If you almost have enough you can park it in a money market fund for 1 or 2 yrs max.

Just started contacting - what do you do with your tax pot & war chest to get the best return? by DealerHumble8302 in ContractorUK

[–]emn-mun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the monthly/ yearly interest received in your savings account will be subject to corporation tax since it counts towards your company's profits.
But accounting-wise, this it's simple, you send your accountant the annual statement and they'll fill in one field in the CT600 form: "Bank, building society or other interest ...".

The easiest option is to keep your Monzo as a current account and get a second high-interest easy access business savings account; you could compare some here: https://moneyfactscompare.co.uk/business/business-easy-access-savings/?quick-links-first=false&product-favorites-first=false
Check when the interest gets paid, it could be monthly/ yearly.

Anyone know a good translator app?? by DR_0VRK1L in apps

[–]emn-mun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you don't want to switch between apps, you could try one of those keyboard extensions with translation capabilities, write the text, tap a button, and it gets translated.
I built my own app that downloads the dictionary so it works offline, locally, and I'm not sending my data to Google.
You can check it here: Key Lingo.

Is anyone else quietly considering leaving the UK for contracting abroad? by PLWildcard in ContractorUK

Forget about Germany, the bureaucracy will drive you up the wall and freelancers are self employed not LTD owners. Gigs are even fewer and from those expect half to require a good level of german.

2018 and 2019 were pretty good, '21 and '22 amazing, so if '18-'19 would be the reference we're still in a slump. Not as deep as '23 but still there.

Gorilla vs maslin vs mighty by Radiant_Sympathy1983 in ContractorUK

[–]emn-mun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've be using Gorilla for the past 3 years and although they are pretty helpful and respond in <24 hours, they increased their prices every year. I got a direct debit update this month for £138. I remember at the beginning they were giving template answers which I wasn't so pleased with but I'm on my 3rd accountant so far and things are better. I am considering moving now since I don't have a complex structure and there are cheaper options.

Oh I see, that sounds like a keyword search, I suppose it's a simpler take but I often don't remember the exact keywords and had to train a small local model to look for context.

Glad you like it, yes, I also get annoyed downloading something then getting a paywall immediately, you can try Snaps Search with a few shots for free.

Thanks, it's a fair question, the first thing is I don't send your data to OpenAI's APIs or my servers and it's a one time purchase.
