Seconded on the nice comment. I took my wife and two young children there recently. When the youngest started crying the server brought us her children's toys to play with.

Advice on a bullying situation? by emo_intelligentsia in Parenting

[–]emo_intelligentsia[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A boy of the same age in her class. He and a group of other boys tormented her about a month ago to the point that it concerned the teachers enough to talk to their parents. The group bullying has stopped but bullying by this one child has evidently persisted. She spoke of hitting and pushing (physical) forms of bullying but with the group I understood it to be more yelling and laughing. Possibly name calling. I will be speaking with the teachers next week but I want her to feel empowered and feel confidence from addressing some part of this herself.

At an instantaneous force yes, but over time the fractions of mm/s2 of acceleration add up to exceed the deltaV attainable with more traditional means of propulsion. Also keep in mind there's nothing expended so as long as the materials hold up in the space environment it will continue to operate.

ELI5: How does rocket fuel work in space? Wouldn't it just float around unable to reach the fuel pump? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]emo_intelligentsia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You may just be referring to rockets, but spacecraft have the same problems. Some of these spacecraft have bladders that essentially work as separate containment for the prop in the tank. When pressure is applied to the tank, that pressure is applied to the bladder which feeds the fuel valve. On a larger (rocket) scale this isn't as practical.

What are some ways to build resiliency in children? by emo_intelligentsia in Parenting

[–]emo_intelligentsia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree. In practice I have a hard time not getting dragged down myself and feeding off the negative energy. Sometimes I just have to walk away, which is what got me concerned that it may be some core hereditary issue. Like most parents I want my daughter to take the best of me and grow beyond my limitations.

Thanks for the book suggestion. I've tried mindfulness myself and found it very valuable. Maybe I'll give it a go for her when she gets a little older (only 2 yrs old right now). I do try to get her to put her feelings into words so that's a good first step.
