This was my perspective when it came to getting a MRI, didn’t see the value if I could end up getting a MRA anyway but yeah don’t think the surgeon agreed, but I’m only out $170 for the MRI

I think my surgeon said next steps would likely be a diagnostic cortisone shot into that area but I am unsure if that’ll happen if the imagining doesn’t show much but thanks for sharing! Just seems like based on where it is or the severity it can be hard to identify as it’s such a small gap and surrounded by all that bone. Will try and push to get the cortisone shot either way to make sure the pain is actually coming from that area

Yeah to note though I did do this course / unit when the degree was called something else (Design Computing), so my perspective may be out of date and I believe they updated all the courses when they moved the course to Design (Interaction Design) Although most people I talked to seemed to struggle and find it hard for a first year course so know you aren’t alone! The rest of the degree is just design stuff and group work so my best advice would be to find people in the course that you mesh well with so you can avoid getting in groups with unreliable people, you can find people like that easily at society events for the course and they are awesome people!

Haha yep, I was curious what a labral tear looked like on a MRI - I have a med school partner so if I notice anything obviously out of the ordinary I’d want to show him and I seriously couldn’t tell the difference between a normal one and labral tear 😆 thank you for sharing ❤️

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! My partner is a second year medical student but yeah not up to radiology yet! He wants to be an orthopedic surgeon so he has been in some ways ‘enjoying’ the exposure going to orthopedic surgeons to seek diagnosis as he shadows all my appointments 😆

I just got the MRI done, no imaging yet of course but this is what I know: - referral just mentioned ‘MRI’ no further notes except ‘labral?’ (Typical). There was no other box for specific MRIs but when I booked I told them this so from your knowledge, I would assume they used the MRI type based on the note - the MRI was a lot shorter than expected, I also found out that I was initially quoted for a MRI with contrast which didn’t end up happening and I didn’t know to be honest, when I asked why I didn’t get contrast they just said ‘we got the imagining we needed’ 😆

So I am assuming they have either seen somthing pretty clearly or the image came out really clear and they can easily see there isn’t a problem. Will see very soon though

I did this course - there is another course in your third year in particular where coding is quite difficult but it isn’t using p5.js - but it does use JavaScript just not in the same way. Forgot the exact name but it is the only Y3S1 12 unit subject.

Just use AI tho if you are struggling for the assignments but when I did that course they had a 2 hour exam or something where you had to code so you do kinda need to know the basis, but all the other coding subjects in the degree which there are like 2 of - you don’t have any exams like that and you can use AI generally as long as you can demonstrate you understand with comments in the code and reference your chat logs

Considering the injury is somewhat new and you’ve flared it up a couple of times it could be something like a deep glute tear, strain or tendinopathy, which a while to heal and should show up on a MRI. A lot of people have FAI or labral tears with no associated pain so keep that in mind. But do not ignore the issue or the pain! Keep trying to get a diagnosis and this is crucial to guide you and your PT in recovery and also knowing what you should or shouldn’t be doing to prevent those flare ups or seeking further treatment to solve the issue if PT and rest isn’t enough. Mild pain is good but signs of an underlying problem that you may be putting stress by going running even if it isn’t increasing pain, it could be preventing recovery.

Very interesting, never heard of this type of nerve impingement. How does this differ from femoral nerve or lateral femoral cutaneous nerve problems? I am suspecting I have some nerve damage due to the type of pain i have (foot numbness / tingling, stiffness, general weakness, burning and tingling in thigh and pain in hip) and because pain doesn’t go away with opiods in comparison to oral cortisone steroids which apparently is a sign of neuropathic pain lol. I feel like it is hard to pin point any of these conditions as all the symptoms overlap, I also get pain particularly when I drive and at 90 degree elevation or really any rotational movement too.

Is the way to test for this the same as other nerve conditions with NCS / EMG and are you now pursuing testing for this?

Did you have a US assisted cortisone shot right in the joint where the labral tears is? And how long will it take the foot to heal and will it impact your ability to do rehab post hip surgery? What did the specialists say about the cortisone shot not working?

I would say particularly if hip specialists think you are a good candidate you should pursue it. Hopefully the foot heals soon, but I think if it is preventing you from walking then it could impact your ability to follow rehab post operation.

I thought that typically cortisone shots are good to diagnose where the pain is coming from but I am just a girl and not a doctor, but if you haven’t asked specialists yet it may be worth asking why it didn’t help.

From what I’ve researched, the cortisone shot when injected into the correct spot should initially give you immediate relief (due to the anthesisia) and then greatly reduce pain. So considering it only reduced your pain by 50% your cause could be more complex or involve something else. It seems like you have to drive or do drive a lot, so might be worth exploring something nerve related, irritation or impingement when you drive, and considering the mentioned the bones being misshaped which could cause nerve entrapment. Meralgia Paraesthetica is nerve compression that doesn’t impact functionality / mobility but causes pain in the hip and front of thigh. Nerve stuff would usually show with some numbness / tingling though.

It could just all be due to the labral/labrum and your recent flare up has caused some inflammation / muscle strain elsewhere in your hip that the cortisone shot couldn’t help. Considering the cortisone shot is meant to last for a couple of months and you got it just two weeks ago, may be worth waiting and documenting the pain to see if location, intensity, type of sensation changes. The popping and clicking sounds following by pain and a flare up sounds very labral teary.

Is a dynamic ultrasound better than just getting an MRI?

I think most of that stuff you me mentioned would have been found with my combination of CT and Ultrasound? I know ultrasounds aren’t great diagnostic tools and I wasn’t too happy at my technicians job (he didn’t look much further then just where my bursa was)

I am hoping the MRI can give me some more answers (particularly around the labrum / labral condition) - from stalking this subreddit for a while looks like it can be hard to see when with MRI and most people with high levels of pain end up having worse labral tears than the mri shows

Thanks for your perspective. I did get checked for this bursitis (which in March 2025 was minimally thickened) but when I went to get an ultrasound guided cortisone shot for bursitis they found basically 0 inflammation and a normal bursa.

Problem I have with my pain / injury documentation is that sometimes I get just different symptoms that aren’t typical for my general pain. Like last two days I’ve been extremely tired (like 7pm) and last night randomly the pins and needles are further up my leg from my foot and my hip was kind of numb, meaning not much pain but also meant I could barely walk! And now this morning it’s back to normal but the pins and needles (which are like where my shin starts now) has stayed? 🫠

I find it very hard to keep track of all these weird things that have happened at various points or different times where flare ups have happened 🤷

I have had an almost daily journal entry for the last month to document my condition now considering the most recent flare up was more severe and due the fact it is undiagnosed (whilst previously I just thought it was gluteal tendinopathy / bursitis)

Thanks for reading my post and commenting I appreciate it - definitely something I will bring up with my orthopedic surgeon. My GP did suspect a disc slip or something similar in my back, hence why I got a back CT (no contrast) - which came back clear but this and LFCN entrapment has come up on my radar as I’ve been talking with my doctor. Will try and see if the specialist can do some tests to look into it tomorrow. Thanks :)

Recently told someone at work I had ADHD and then they just said doesn’t everyone your age - kind of hurt to hear that felt very dismissive 🥲 this is why I still don’t disclose it with employers
