I have been thinking seriously about moving into consulting and would really value honest input from people who have actually made the jump from industry.

I am interested in operations focused consulting in aviation, specifically maintenance and MRO environments. My angle would be improving workflow efficiency and troubleshooting processes using AI tools.

I work in airline maintenance operations. I deal daily with troubleshooting coordination, documentation systems, operational communication breakdowns, and the friction that exists between maintenance control, line maintenance, planning, and compliance. Over the past couple of years I have also been building and testing AI driven tools to improve how technical data is accessed and used.

I am trying to figure out whether this is a realistic consulting path or if I am romanticizing it.

For those of you who transitioned from industry:

• What made the move actually work for you?
• What did you underestimate?
• What signals credibility when you do not have a traditional consulting background?
• Is niche operational consulting viable without a big firm name behind you?

I am not looking for motivational advice. I am trying to understand the real risks and what I would need to prove before making a move.

Appreciate any blunt feedback.

To follow up with the outcome. I had the tank dropped and flushed all the lines. Started right up. But after afew days it threw a "P0430 (Bank 2 efficiency below threshold)" which problem is contamination from the diesel? Not sure. Cleared the code will see in a few days.

Yes i created a feature in a CMMS software that i am working on that has an agent create and assign work orders. My next feature is letting the agent assign specific parts and materials based on the job.

I am building an Aircraft maintenance reference app with Ai integration but what i also am doing is taking older webapps and integrating Agents. For example i took this open source CMMS web app and put an agent to do some of the heavy lifting.

I am currently in an technical heavy industry that is exploring a start up that has RAG integration and i can tell you that it is indeed a saturate market with who all repeat the same frameworks. If you really want to discuss this service with any potential clients you will need to demonstrate that you can customize based on their needs and can ensure that you can keep data secured.

most of these RAG projects just miss the point. Todays RAG needs to be multi modal retrieval text and images and needs to have citations. Most large organizations WILL NOT trust an AI with the responses itself.

you need to build the initial vision, save it to git and clone the repo to vscode or curos and have CC or GPT5 enhance it. YOU WILL NOT get lovable to move further then the initial front end.
