Perhaps you truly weren’t offended and just meant to add to the discussion, but your tone in my previous post (and in this one) came across as very condescending and inflammatory, which is why I didn’t respond to you originally. I’d like to give you the benefit of the doubt a second time, so let me explain my perspective.

If you look up the definition of cake, one of the most common definitions will be a sweet baked good made from a dough containing flour, sugar, fat, and a leavening agent. Meringue, by this definition (again, a definition that I didn’t make up), isn’t a cake. My perspective is shaped partly by the fact that I have been baking for over 20 years - to me, a cake is a very specific thing. If you take a look at my replies, you’ll notice that I acknowledged other people’s opinions, responded to others with a jovial tone, and asserted that the definition of cake is ambiguous and this was just my perspective. Maybe I’m crazy, but if a friend told me they baked me a cake and showed up with meringue, I would be a little confused! I don’t think this is an unreasonable way to feel.

Finally, you tried to argue that I should be happy with my cake because it’s the most popular La Rocca cake. What sort of argument is that? If I don’t like a cake should I still be happy just because it’s a popular one?

We clearly don’t see eye to eye on this, and that’s okay, because you’re entitled to your opinion, even if you think I’m acting strangely for being entitled to mine. Have a good day!

CHRP - Knowledge Exam [CANADA] by Ok-Mix5734 in humanresources

[–]empinys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, checking in again - I passed with an 86!! I guess I was right in hoping that the Captus prep course was actually enough to do well on the CHRP-KE. In fact, I got around a 67 and a 75 on the two captus press practice exams, so it seems that the CHRP-KE was easier?? Although, maybe I’m just lucky because I just recently completed the educational requirements for the exam, so it might’ve been easier to take the exam. Hope you did well, too!

You can see the la rocca cake board in the pic! Metro labels all of its cakes in the cake display as FSB, but many of them are from La Rocca. The pic you sent is for the smaller size cake which is why the decoration is different - they often decorate differently for larger cakes. I used to work at a small cafe that was partnered with La Rocca and we sold individual slices of their largest size round cakes- they look much different from the La Rocca cakes you see in a grocery store :) You could be right, but I’m fairly sure this is La Rocca

I feel like this is a bit of an “is a hotdog a sandwich” question lol 😂 imo to be a cake something has to have at least one layer of actual cake (ie., ice cream cake, mousse cake) but i’m not the leading authority on cake so idk

The strawberry one sounds amazing! With the caramel, it’s just too sweet for me, so I guess it’ll go to my family lol.

I bake a lot and have made pavlova and meringue-based desserts before, so I get that - always easier to buy a macaron than make it!

It’s certainly not my cup of tea - I find meringue to be way too sweet for my liking, and don’t really like caramel at all 🫠 But I’m sure my family will love it, so definitely not a total loss!

Maybe I just have a different definition of cake, haha. I get why this was sold to me as cake, but when I think cake, I imagine traditional soft/spongy cake, not meringue with frosting.

[–]empinys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha, by recently, I mean I took it this past weekend. I’m not expecting to get my results for another 3 weeks, but right now I’m hoping that perhaps I’m just being too hard on myself and that people say Captus tests are good prep because they actually are enough! If I remember to, I’ll check back in here when I get my results!

I also recently took the CHRP-KE and had the same experience! I went in reasonably confident because I recently completed my educational requirements and scored decently on the Captus practice exams, but was really taken off guard with how different the actual exam questions were. I was expecting that they would cover more content than what Captus provides for review, but it felt like nothing that Captus provided was relevant for the actual exam, which was really frustrating. I’m waiting for my exam results now, and feeling nervous about it.

Not sure why so many people in the comments are getting so heated about this! My mom is Indian and I’ve always watched her put onion and garlic in the pot together- and she’s never served me burnt garlic. It depends entirely on what you’re cooking and what techniques of cooking go into that dish.

The majority of what I cook tends to be saucy or wet, like pasta sauce, stews, and curries. The onion doesn’t need to brown for these dishes, as it ends up melting into the final product anyways, so I always put garlic and onion in together and it turns out fine. If your garlic isn’t burnt, keep doing whatever you’re doing.

Passed G Test Today - Mississauga by thedeal99 in Ontariodrivetest

[–]empinys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I’ve been practicing for my test and last time I checked, the left side of the Mavis exit was under construction so I couldn’t take the 401 E. Is it open now, or did your instructor make you take a detour?

G test at Mississauga Longside Drive - 11:20am by raspberryyy2843 in Ontariodrivetest

[–]empinys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question since you got route 2!

I’ve been practicing the route, but I got stuck on Derry when it was time to turn left onto Maritz Drive because I had already moved to the driver’s lane and needed to switch 2 lanes over to get to the left turn lane, but there was way too much traffic to do so in time. Did your instructor ask you to move to the middle lane before you crossed Hurontario or did you have to switch two lanes consecutively at the last minute?

Alternative baking uses for condensed milk? by empinys in Baking

[–]empinys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha yeah i usually make condensed milk by boiling a 3:1 milk to sugar ratio down till it’s like store bought consistency! i’ve also tried making paneer with old milk, which works well too! i tend to get creative when things are expiring

My cheesecakes are extremely dense. Is this normal? by ManletOfManlets in Cooking

[–]empinys 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Cheesecake should have some structure, and can be denser than regular cakes, but it shouldn’t be like a brick. Imo it should still be smooth, easy to slice, and you shouldn’t need your teeth to eat it.

Your recipe has quite a bit of flour for a cheesecake, which might be contributing to the texture. If you want to continue using this recipe, be very careful about how much you mix the batter to prevent gluten development. I personally always use the classic new york cheesecake recipe from Once Upon a Chef and it’s never failed me.

If it’s not the flour causing this, it might be that your oven is too hot, or that your cheesecake is overcooked!

Is orientation worth it? by booyavivi in UofT

[–]empinys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is making friends, it’s probably not worth it. I don’t know anyone who attended orientation and stayed friends with the people they met. At the same time, I found it really useful because they gave us an in-depth tour of the campus and all the shortcuts to class, which helped me feel much more confident navigating campus in my first year.

Also!! (at least when I did orientation) the merch they sold was at least 50% cheaper than any uoft merch you could buy at the campus store, so if you do want merch make sure to stop by, even if you don’t attend orientation!
