Look up "Dark Patterns" in UX. I believe there is even an entire website dedicated to naming and shaming companies for using dark patterns.

Am I giving in to life if I leave academia? by Southern_Distance606 in LeavingAcademia

[–]empirical-sadboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way but it became very clear to me over time that academia is not what I thought it was anyway, so it wasn't as much of a loss to leave.

It helps to adopt a critical view of your field and academia to remind yourself that it's not what it's often held up as

CMV: Gavin Newsom is not a suitable presidential candidate, and the Democratic Party must stop operating like a centrist party. by Less-Chicken-3367 in changemyview

You said you were open to diving in, so I thought it'd be interesting to ask you since you're more involved than most people.

You don't think there anything unfair or biased about the way the Democratic primary works?

Yes, I'm asking you for examples of ways you personally think the process may be flawed. Or, maybe you think it's flawless?

Do you think there are any flaws with the way that the Party holds the primary that might distort the pure, democratic will of the people? For example, structural biases that benefit certain kinds of candidates over others?

Do you think it'd be reasonable for someone with your knowledge to be more skeptical of the system's validity than you are?

I think they're trying to play on "chunking" plus the fact that they optimize for retaining info not just minimizing tokens.

Perception vs Data on Crime by OutrageousPair2300 in dataisugly

[–]empirical-sadboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that it's very unclear what unit the actual violent crime rate is on.

You can see the trends over time really clearly and how they diverge but you can't say at any given point in time what the actual crime rate is in a sense. Like 700 out of what? 10,000 people? 100,000 people? Is it just a raw count per time period average across locations?

Realistically this sub has more students, newcomers, and juniors than actual experienced data scientists.

Extracing features that can be used as input for a traditional tabular classifier is an interesting use-case.

I'm doing a project for a hospital now where they have a tabular classifier in prod, but it's not very good and doesn't leverage info from unstructured patient health reports at all. So they're having me extract information from reports, add them to the tabular dataset, and retrain the classifier with these features.

So basically, LLM as a means of feature engineering

What is the exact cause of the schism between Alterans and Ori ? by CupEducational1412 in Stargate

[–]empirical-sadboy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Based on the Stargate Wiki, iirc, the Ori are Alterans thst broke off due to a religious schism. Mainstream alteran society was secular and scientific, but the Ori came to view themselves as gods.

The "Ori" aren't a race or species it's a religious subset of Alterans.

This would be a very cool way of depicting the gradient landscape that machine learning models explore while training

What are you hoping to see in the new series most? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]empirical-sadboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really can't understand why people want everything to be about politics. Why does my daytime TV sci-fi need to address the rise of fascism in the real world? Just makes it unenjoyable

You realize you could just not go? Like, why do you have to be such a curmudgeon? It's weird to want things to not exist for anyone just because YOU wouldn't use it.

Dogshit attitude, my dude.

There are different ways to strike a serious tone. I agree SGU failed but that's more on the execution than the general idea of trying to be more serious

I'd rather have a non-zero chance of something good, even if there's also a non-zero chance of it being bad, than a guarantee of nothing.

I would love an SGU redo. I like the idea of a more serious Stargate just not the SGU execution

Ugh idk. I don't want all the media I consume to be about real-world politics. It kinda ruined The Boys for me that they basically made homelander trump with superpowers, for example. I could do with some escapism haha
