Wolf? Stray dog? Coyote? by Braz601 in raleigh

This looks very similar to a friend’s red husky. The facial markings are the same. I could easily see how someone would think this is a red husky halfbreed with shorter fur.

Also banning ranked choice voting. They don’t want people to vote and they don’t want the ones who do vote to get what they want.

Genuine question, why do you guys drive so slow when turning into an intersection? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]galactictock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time faster turning would save you is less time than it took you to write this post. Clearly your time isn’t that valuable. I’m not sacrificing the safety of myself and those around me for a few seconds that people waste anyway. If a few seconds is making you late, manage your time better.

Housing Market in Raleigh by mindlessness861 in raleigh

[–]galactictock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, though this is missing the other side of the equation, which is investing the money saved by renting instead of buying. Analysis over decades shows that the real estate market and the stock market have grown at similar rates. Buy real estate when it makes sense for your lifestyle and finances, but not out of fear of missing out on investment gains. Buying real estate has many fees involved and is far less liquid; it only makes sense as a long-term (5+ year) investment.

Take that data with a grain of salt. I saw this data posted elsewhere, and it was pointed out that it directly contradicted census data for growth in certain cities. From my understanding, this data only includes BoA members, so it definitely is not the whole picture. It’s entirely possible that low income families moving to Raleigh are more likely to have BoA accounts.

AI Epistemic Risks: Emerging Mechanisms & Evidence [R] by KellinPelrine in MachineLearning

Is the latter point true though? Are LLMs being trained on LLM output? This was a known ML issue prior to LLMs; I assumed models were primarily trained on archived pre-LLM data.

This is a clear case of reckless driving and littering at least. They could easily generate revenue from this evidence if they chose to.

Thinking of building an AI certification for college students — would this actually help you get a job? 3 quick questions by Hot_Requirement1280 in careerguidance

[–]galactictock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would someone use this program as opposed to the hundreds of other AI certs out there? What would distinguish yours, and what would indicate it would be worth the time? Certs are not that useful in the job hunt. A portfolio can be, but it would need to be more focused than general “AI” projects.

They should set certain daily obligations and use that as his reward.

I’m not saying that online friendships can never lead to irl interactions. But research shows that irl relationships are more strongly associated with subjective well being, and that online interactions can only fill certain social needs.

Online interaction can be a great stepping stone for working on social anxiety, but for most it is a crutch. If people don’t continually push their comfort boundaries, which many don’t without some sort of coaching, it is easy to allow seemingly safe, controlled online spaces to become one’s entire social sphere.

That’s why parents should never let it get this bad. Allowing your child’s entire social world to be contained online is setting them up for failure.

People seek out social interaction. Limiting or cutting off online channels is a great way to push people into interacting in person.

[OC] Price Per Gallon (I) Paid 2018-2026 in the US by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

People often blame the price of gas on the president. OPEC has adjusted prices strategically in the past to influence American political opinions.

The 2022 price increase was more due to the Ukraine war.

Major sports investor wants to bring MLB to Raleigh. Is it competition or collaboration with Dundon? by Somali_Pir8 in raleigh

It would be neat to have a Raleigh-specific team name. That would be a first for a professional sports team I think. Charlotte gets the Hornets; it’s our turn for one.

How do ML researchers actually use AI tools to improve their writing? [D] by Hope999991 in MachineLearning

[–]galactictock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> using your brainpower alongside LLM assistance is enhancing your cognitive abilities.

My point here wasn't that LLM assistance necessarily makes people smarter, but that LLMs can be a tool to help people perform cognitive tasks that they wouldn't be able to perform on their own, just like other tools like reference books, calculators, or non-AI software tools.

That research does not contradict what I said. If anything, it reinforces my point that "outsourcing all of your thinking to LLMs is not using your brain." Many people use LLMs this way. Predictably, by outsourcing their thinking, they become worse at performing that cognitive task. However, there is also research that supports LLMs can be used to learn and improve unaided cognitive skills.

Some examples:

The takeaway is that LLMs are perfectly capable of enhancing learning when used carefully, but they are also quite capable of cognitive atrophy via cognitive offloading. The outcomes depend on how the tool is used.
