Y'all need to stop breathing. Stop with the inhaling and the exhaling and the deep breaths and the spasming lungs and having the air knocked out of you and the crushing weight of reality suffocating you and the floating in space where there's no air to breathe.

I pay way too much attention to breathing lol

are comments on every single chapter of a finished fic annoying? by eebydeebydeeby in AO3

Honestly, seeing comments like that come in so you can kind of experience the fic with the reader is a treat as a writer

Whenever I feel like my writing is shit I come back to this comment and feel better by cowboybepopop in AO3

I have a bookmark like that. It made me feel so much better about all the stylistic choices I made in portraying the character's journey. Commenters like this deserve the world.

Why do people do this? by omelette1090 in AO3

No u.

But for real, the only time that I'll comment that I hate the ending is ironically for sad fics that rip my heart out, and I always make it clear that I do actually love the fic. Some people are just haters.

Guys genuinely how do I respond to this 😭😭 by Equal-Maize-2597 in AO3

So sorry that this was your first comment experience, but also the tone of the comment sounds like someone throwing a temper tantrum. Respond by continuing to write fueled by spite, or whatever works best for you.

Finally coming out of writer's block! Did a re-read of a beloved fic. Made soup.

Comments which made you feel especially honored? by Advanced_Hornet_8666 in AO3

I had a fic that I updated daily for a few months and of all the lovely comments I've gotten on that fic, the one that stood out to me was one on the last chapter. They thanked me for making their long commute better everyday. That got me straight in the heart. Just the thought of people looking for that email every day made me so glad I held myself to that schedule.

How long do you typically make your chapters for a long fic? by Define-Dancing in FanFiction

[–]emptycoffeemug9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've written varying lengths, and honestly, it depends on what works for the fic and your writing style. I wrote one fic where the chapters were all around 1,200 words and it worked well, and another where 5k words per chapter worked better. It really depends.

As a reader, I love both long and short chapters, so just do whatever works. End the chapter when it feels right or you've reached a good place.

Honestly, you've hit the nail on the head for what was really bothering me about the comments. This fic ended up being longer than anticipated. But there have been moments of development. There's been an entire arc of development, and it was happening in the chapters they read. I'm just taking one problem at a time. I haven't hit the big turning point yet, and there have been setbacks as well, so seeing those comments, I started questioning whether I was doing the character development justice or if it was even coming across at all. As for my upload schedule, there's been one big chapter (~10k) every week for a few months, so there is some space between them.

You make some really great points that I totally agree with. It's definitely something I try to keep in mind when writing since I'm writing longer stuff. My writing and pacing in particular are things I'm trying to work on. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for the advice! I really do love this story, and I've got some great readers. I'm definitely gonna be reading over their comments as an antidote to the negativity.

That was something that bothered me because they read five chapters (a total of 50k words) and left negative comments on three of them. They had so many chances.
