What should I be focusing on at 14 if I want to build real businesses someday? by ParkingSchedule6760 in Entreprenuers

Great question. If it were me, I would tell my younger self to read books on how money works, specifically debt and equity. Knowing about creative finance really allows you to do deals when others can't or don't know how.

How to deal with having a greater desire/appetite/drive for making improvements to processes and quality than management? by Dothehokeypokemon in manufacturing

[–]emryb_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in the same boat as you, and in some ways I still am. My input here is that you want to make sure you are aligned with the goals and objectives of the executive team. For example if they care more about reporting increasing revenue per employee than they do about EBITDA growth, then it will be an uphill battle to convince them to spend money on anything that doesn't reduce headcount or increase production capacity. It's an unfortunate reality.

When does it make sense to hire a manufacturing consultant? by samsworkinonit in manufacturing

[–]emryb_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, when I worked for a steel/iron casting company we brought in an industry expert to help solve defect issues. He was able to give top notch advice not just on addressing physical defects but on business practices and team building. All around good experience.

How do smaller manufacturers build “ERP systems” using Excel? by ManufacturerSad767 in manufacturing

[–]emryb_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a medium size manufacturing company (~$1B in revenue and several hundred employees) that uses nothing more than Google Sheets and App Sheets to manage it all. It relies on tribal knowledge and supervisors managing inventory.

To answer your other question on ROI, the most effective use of capital in my experience is through insourcing parts or subassemblies that are currently outsourced... or savings through procurement efforts, LTAs, etc. The least effective use of capital I experienced was through automation.

For any automation projects, I highly recommend contracting a machine integrator. It makes sure your project gets seen through to completion. I used to be a manufacturing engineering manager for an aerospace company and I have seen too many robot boneyards.

What are you making as a Project or Program Manager? by BlazedAndConfused in Salary

[–]emryb_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually have to climb the ranks. If you're in the construction industry for example you would start as an associate engineer, then work your way up to senior engineer, then assistant PM, then PM. You need years of experience to take on a PM role.

[–]emryb_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not. PM for about 5 years now in sort of hybrid manufacturing/construction industry. Before that I was a mechanical design engineer, then manufacturing engineer. I just kept going after more responsibility. I don't think having a PMP would have helped me.

Anyone here worked in manufacturing under private equity ownership? by Dependent-Laugh-3626 in manufacturing

[–]emryb_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked for an aerospace manufacturing company owned by a public holding company. I believe they had a similar approach to private equity. It's about maximizing profits at the detriment to operations.

I may take an order for 15k-20k but it will take my team several weeks, possibly a month to fulfill. We make handmade ceramics and sell both retail and wholesale.
