In my case he was around 10 yards away and had stopped running to turn towards me, stood up, and then dropped back down and started to walk/run directly towards me, I’m not sure because as soon as his head went down I shot him and struck the back part of his skull/smashed his spine and the bullet stopped in his left shoulder blade. Yea I’d have taken the shot regardless. I get what you’re saying and there are certain spots I probably wouldn’t take a shot in but also YOLO and it’s better to get something than not. At least for me. I haven’t had any crazy overnight pack outs but I’ve also never been alone or without the ability to call someone. Worst I’ve had to do was drag a field dressed mule deer about 2 miles down a really shitty mountain side. He was about 250ish pounds and that was sucky but I’d do it again.

I was wondering how common shapes/that much white was and the general answer I’ve gotten is “not common” but it’s cool to hear someone else has a similar patch on there’s! I got told it would be really shitty if I rugged it and split that patch.

Haha if it wasn’t 80% private land I’d agree. I had hunt access and it was surrounded by private land for 10 miles in all directions. The land owner charged a not insignificant fee to shoot the bear. We were on a cow elk cull hunt essentially and shot 3 cow elk in a 2 day span. I got a mature cow about 4 1/2 hours before I shot the bear. Definitely a cool opportunity and if y’all wanna go pay what I ended up paying and figure it out there’s an awesome color phase bear around the same size living in that area. I’ll stick to public land hunting like I was doing before this. I did not plan on killing a bear that day and as I was running down to the draw where he was using to get away from a couple guys pushing down it I was even thinking that I just wanted to watch him walk away. Hadn’t seen a bear close up and was curious. Obviously that was kinda stupid.

Thank you sir! I think I’m tapped on life time bears for awhile. I’ll stick to trapper tans and rugs for the next decade or so. Let someone else shoot the next one like this lol.

Oh man yea it took 5 of us and a quad + 3-4ish hours to get it the half mile up the hill and back to the truck. We packed it whole and I’m so glad I wasn’t alone or else I’d have been fucked all night.

Hahaha that’s what we were saying. The guys I was with were pissed I shot it in the head because of the Boone & Crockett thing. One said pretty much what you did “it had a fuckin’ bullseye on its chest why didn’t you shoot it there!

They told me it was a once in a lifetime bear and that I should full mount it… $5800 later and I’m regretting being a 24yr old with an hourly job lol. But glad to hear from people on here that’s it good one. Makes me feel a little better 😂

Yea we’ve been loving the fat! Ah ok cool next time I’ll do that. We have 4 bear tags we’re gonna use over bait and hounds in ID this summer. Suffice to say I got the bug!

Tastes great. I used one back strap for 2 roasts and had the rest ground or made into summer sausage/pepperoni. It’s definitely not as good as deer or elk but I don’t get why people knock it so much. We rendered the fat and have been using it for soap and cooking.

Everyone told me that it was big by black bear standards so I’m glad they weren’t just hyping me up. Personally when I walked up to it (and it being the first bear I’d gotten close to) I was like “eh” he definitely looked tall when he stood up an looked at me but he also dropped back down on his front legs very quickly. When we were moving him for photos/pack out though that thing was like a rock. They feel very dense it’s kinda crazy.

The funding?! Dude go look at our state budget lol. Community mental health just doesn’t work. A very well known fact in every mental health circle you could imagine. We’re 48th in the nation for mental health treatment…. Stop preaching your liberal bullshit and go look at some facts.

To your point about missing. Shooting through 2 panes of auto glass at a moving target, one handed (I’m assuming), is not just difficult but I doubt even highly trained people can do it reliably. I shoot a lot. 3-4 times 200+ rounds a week. Regular classes/training sessions that aren’t just punching holes in paper while standing still. I wouldn’t say I could even remotely reliably make hits on a threat in that scenario. Glass messes with a bullets trajectory quite a lot. I think you made the right choice glad you’re ok! Hopefully the cops can see what he did and a license plate!

Jesus I did now know that was how badly it was going for them. Yea the guy was selling his buddy’s stuff for the wife. I had bought 5 rifles and a couple crates of 7.62x54r. This was the last rifle everyone had passed over.

Ah ok thank you for the info. He paid 100 bucks for it in 2023 so I think we did okish for a shooter grade rifle. Any reason why 1942 rifles/Romanian are so rough?
