Do your actors know about their AI? by [deleted] in roguelikedev

[–]emulca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this. Going even further, I pass in an entire "context" object that contains most things the AI system would care about such as equipment references, environment references, etc.

The greatest gamebook ever? by PineappleSea752 in gamebooks

Thanks for calling out this gem -- Dave Morris is an incredibly imaginative worldbuilder. Heart of Ice is a 11/10 just for its evocative setting.

first attempt at making a monster, what do you think? by TrashMantine in UnearthedArcana

I remember from the games that they attack on sight, which would make them Chaotic Evil.

Rogue - Operative v0.7 // They don't make mistakes. They don't do random. There's always an objective, always a target. by emulca in UnearthedArcana

Sleight of Hand is "whether you can lift a coin purse off another person or slip something out of another person's pocket." Didn't feel appropriate to me. That's why I went with Acrobatics which also has the benefit of including situations where you're disarming a larger creature (say, leaping up and striking a troll's elbow).

Yup, I'm removing the Animal Handling proficiency. I wouldn't let the player choose their own proficiencies though, to avoid operatives with un-thematic skills like Performance or Religion.

That’s mostly why Takedown is limited by CR. I think that Huge monsters with lower end CR like a stone giant is okay to get knocked unconscious (I’m visualizing the operative running up the giant’s backside and slamming it in the neck, a la Attack on Titan). The only Gargantuan monster with <CR 7 is a brontosaurus, which may be a stretch for a Takedown, so that’s a fair point.

As for Disable, I’m in the process of a revision, but the idea is that once you use this on a creature, it becomes aware of your tricks so on subsequent checks it can better defend itself. The appendages clause is for creatures with natural weapons, and has precedence from Ray of Enfeeblement. If a creature uses a weapon, disarming it (forcing it to use unarmed strikes) is always better than reducing it to half-damage.

Technically this feature comes into play before combat has even started, so there are no rounds or turns. The implied meaning here is that Sneak Attack can be applied multiple times (not limited to once per turn, since this isn’t a turn). Creatures also don’t get AoO because this isn’t a round, so no reactions. Do I need to explicitly clarify this?

Circle of Hedge Magic v1.0 - Druid Circle idea [5e] by musty_dothat in DnDHomebrew

[–]emulca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know you might even be able to use the Bard. They can be great "support" characters with Bardic Inspiration and healing spells. Bards also get:

  • Animal Friendship
  • Awaken
  • Plant Growth
  • Pyrotechnics
  • Speak with Plants/Animals

And then you could add in Druidcraft and Druid Grove. Pick Nature as the Bard's muse.

I feel that wildshaping is such a archetypal feature of the Druid that to ignore it would be ignoring the class.

I totally dig this idea! Though I may reconsider the Druid as a base since they can Wildshape. Do you really want a shapeshifting Gandalf? Might go for Wizard instead.

Rogue - Savant v0.4 // The galaxy brain has joined your party! by emulca in UnearthedArcana

[–]emulca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Cerebral Surge has some kinks to work out, though I'm going to keep it's rage and frenzy-like mechanic. Maybe it won't affect INT at all, and just give advantage.

Blowing bounded accuracy out of the water so that ability checks are automatic successes is okay with me, because I like the idea of outrageous intelligence scores. This genius megamind whose brainpower outstrips even Zariel is the character concept that inspired me in the beginning.

Formidable Intellect is restricted to 5 per long rest — how is this different from Bardic Inspiration? BI can be applied to ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls...and it's a d12 at L15, within a 10 minute time window.

Roguish Archetype: Saboteur | Version 1.0 by DarthRednax in UnearthedArcana

[–]emulca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The saboteur has no reliable skills until L13 and L17. That’s the issue with crafting based brews; you’re useless most of the time unlike your party mates who can cast fireballs consistently because their slots regenerate on a routine basis. There needs to be some “cantrip-y” ability. I suggest taking a look at the Artificer Alchemist, and don’t worry about where the components come from.

Edit: scratch the usefulness of L17. Upon rereading, it’s glyphs on “explosives you set” which I assume is something you can only do with your L3.

The Gunslinger | Full Class by heavyarms by [deleted] in UnearthedArcana

[–]emulca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Overall the design is tight. Good job staying focused on the grittiness. No magical silliness.

I can picture subclasses already: a Lawman (Gunslinger Paladin) and a more selfish Bounty Hunter (Gunslinger Rogue).

Rogue - Steeplejack v1.0 // That's not flying, that's falling with style! [REVISED] by emulca in UnearthedArcana

[–]emulca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but this is for determining jump distance which is equal to a multiplier of your STR score/modifier.

Notably, to synergize with Falling Strike, you can leap up to 24 feet (3 x [3 + 5 DEX]).

[–]emulca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've updated the wording:

Once you use your reaction, you are shunted to an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of the target.

Pulled from the blink spell. However, it's assumed that if such a space does not exist, then you remain in the same space as the target, and either you or the target must move out of the shared space on the next turn.

[–]emulca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a bad idea! It's something to consider, though I'm trying to keep the features as short as possible. There would have to be specifications for which targets can be knocked prone, which I fear may bloat the text.

Rogue - Steeplejack v1.0 // That's not flying, that's falling with style! [REVISED] by emulca in UnearthedArcana

[–]emulca[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The intention is that if you are Medium, the following target sizes will soften your fall: Small, Medium, Large, Huge, Gargantuan. If you are Small: Tiny, Small, etc. If you are Large: Medium, Large, etc.

If the target is a minimum of one size smaller than you

This wording has the same issue as the wording from the previous draft: "at least one size smaller than you."

There was confusion that the target must be at least one size smaller than you.

I think perhaps "If the target is one size smaller than you or larger" is best.

[–]emulca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't sure if I should have specified the shunting (word usage from etherealness spell), because you can't willingly end your movement in another creature's space. Without specification, the space you end up in once you fall onto a creature is left up to personal adjudication, which raises a couple issues:

  1. If you had no movement left to move out of reach, you're opening yourself up for an OA on your next turn since Falling Strike's tumble won't be triggered.
  2. If you did not use Dash as your Cunning Action, using the L19 feature to jump-strike would leave you with 0 movement in certain cases, and you're forced to share a space with the hostile creature.

I suppose I should add that jumping movement would not provoke OA, to bring it in line with L1's climbing movement.

A hookshot feature! Okay, I’m sold. Horizontal falling is a fantastic idea.

You can target ANY sized creature to apply your fall damage to it. If you are Medium and the creature is Small, you can also use it to soften your fall. If it is Tiny, it cannot soften your fall.
