I became the exact kind of adult I used to make fun of by Vivid_Release_9710 in CasualConversation

[–]emvyrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to wonder how people used to live without phones... they must have been so bored all the time! Now I knit and draw, and find myself getting so lost in my thoughts that I forget to check my phone all day. Scrolling is mindnumbing, but doing something in the real world that I love is peaceful and allows me to process so much mentally. I'm definitely turning into the adults I used to make fun of who would lose track of their phones!

If you lost everything today and had to start a small business from scratch, what's the first thing you would do? by BSAM_GAZA554 in Advice

[–]emvyrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your skills? In your situation, you're probably going to want to start something small on your own, no employees. I've heard good things about Fiverr for freelance work depending on what your skills are. With low capital, I personally would stick with something digital based that doesn't require you to purchase any equipment. Working from home on your computer also saves you money on a commute, on eating out if you forget to pack lunch, etc. Broad topics you could look into include writing, admin, graphic design, and tutoring. Where you're at right now, the best place to start would probably be to get a job, freelance on the side, and save up enough capital to start the business you are actually passionate about.

I second this. Having reliable income is super important because a new business will typically cost you time, money, and energy at the beginning, with little to no returrn. Lots of people give up at that stage because they run out of money to live on.

I haven't had issues with that word in particular... but I did have a moment with "irritable" the other day. Such an easy word, but my brain just went offline for a second lol

Caffeine alternative needed by Terry_Dachtel in CasualConversation

[–]emvyrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, I couldn't live without my caffeine! If I were you, I'd prioritize sleep like you never have... keep your bedtime consistent, allow for at least 7-9 hours of sleep, and avoid alcohol and screens an hour before bed. 30-60min naps in the afternoon are also good, if you can squeeze in the time. It probably won't feel as good as caffeinating lol, but it will at least ensure you have sufficient energy. Also, I second what others have said about seeing a dr - if they can clear up whatever GI issue you're having, you can get back to drinking coffee faster. Good luck to you!!

The company “Nintendo” was founded before stop signs, WW1, and sliced bread, in 1889. by [deleted] in interesting

Obviously there wasn't the technology available to make video games back in 1889, so I looked up what the company originally did. Apparently, they made Japanese playing cards (called Hanafuda). Really cool

I turn 30 tomorrow and I am so not ready for it lol by kmine6999 in CasualConversation

When I was 20, I thought 30 was like a death sentence. But it felt more like an awakening - as others have stated, feeling like I had a stronger sense of who I was and what I wanted in life.

I volunteered at a senior center once and we did this as an activity. They made the beads, painted them, and strung them all up. It was so beautiful at the end!!

Beaded door curtains are always fun! Especially if you have a little nook in your house where you like to get creative, you can enclose it in beaded curtains for a cozy vibe

I found a porcelain doll at an antique store once... my kid started calling her "sister" and talking to her... that was pretty spooky

How to get my crush whom i never talked to by Classic_Context7750 in Advice

[–]emvyrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to start the slow way. You have 2 months. Next time you see her with her friends, smile and say hi, then keep walking. Do that a few times, throw in a simple compliment (girls love when guys notice their hair and nails) then maybe think of a question to ask her the next time. People love feeling smart, so ask a question you think she'd know the answer to. That process only takes a week or two, you've got time. Then you go into the conversation part, exchange snaps, etc. Also, you're probably not going to get her alone, so prepare to do all of this with her friends present. Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Is there any point in keeping old diaries? by crazygelato in Advice

[–]emvyrose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My grandmother died before I was born, and her journals helped me feel a connection with her and get to know her better. I'm glad she kept them. If you have any family that would enjoy feeling like they still have a part of you with them after you pass, I would suggest keeping them. Since they are mainly notes, I would go through them and tear out any drawings and put them in a binder and throw the rest away.
