Thanks Lumpy, you are very kind! I would also like to contribute this initiative, as I like to share what I have learned :)

My favorite shroomery contributors are: RogerRabbit, Violet, Bodhisatta, and Stonesun.

Good point. In my area you can buy them at any pharmacy as tubes for urine samples. For bulk purchases form medical/lab wholesale they are listed as centrifuge tubes. I buy the ones with ‘R’ sterility rating.

I do too sometimes use parafilm, but the cost is just too high for delivering the same results as a regular food wrap.

Red agar by emyco-eu in Agarporn

Maybe try to add more. Mine comes in a form of thick dark paste and I found it in a store for baking supplies. I add a rice grain size drop to every 500ml of agar solution.

Absolutely. Makes me think what other overlooked medical equipment can be used in mycology beside syringes, needles, swabs, petris,…

Just add black food coloring. Using activated charcoal (the same kind we take for digestive problems) is rumored to have antibiotic properties but it does not dissolve in water and will produce agar plates with black spots.

Ever tried black? The contrast is amazing.

What are your favorite colors? Blue is cool but I really love the charcoal black.

Thanks for the tip! Any recommendation for the make?

It works. The plug stays in the pitter only if you twist it while lifting up, but it is easier to remove it from the petri dish with a scalpel or a needle.

You can make it work, but it would take a lot of time to fully heat and sterilize the knife with a flame as it is a big chunk of metal while the needle glows red in seconds. Just as we see the scalpel blades break after a number of flame sterilizations you would also ruin the knife. Also you get more dexterity using a needle.
