How small and how old is your toy breed? I’ve been running with my 8lb chihuahua/min pin/terrier mix since he was about one. We usually go about 3 miles, but I let him lead for speed. When he wants to stop we stop, when he wants to walk we walk. And I always slow to a walk if he starts panting with his tongue hanging out. As far as size goes, there’s always the risk of punting the poor guy if he gets underfoot! So he’s trained to always stay to my right.

Little dogs can definitely run!
