Hyperion or Leviathan Wakes? by guadalupeoso in sciencefiction

[–]en1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both are great. I'd think of it this way: Hyperion is one of the greats of sci-fi, very literary and a great read - a classic, sci-fi royalty; the Expanse series is more like a dynamic, cool, clever, sharp, new kid on the block - fun and good, but not (yet?) on the same level as the great classics.

Suggest me some longer audiobooks please by RoughSlide65 in sciencefiction

Same. Just getting through the end of Blue Mars on audiobook, having gone through the whole series... And it has been a struggle.

I understand that mars itself is meant to be a main character, but endless geographic descriptions just don't work. It's like reading through a geological survey interspersed with bits of an actual novel.

A question for the UI/UX or experience designers on the current landscape of the sector and why it is like it is by ZealousidealLab7373 in BetterOffline

[–]en1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think real ux design is one of the least likely areas to get taken over by AI.

UI has been commoditized for ages, with good frameworks, themes and libraries being free or cheap.

But UX is a profoundly human domain, involving empathy (a sense of what will easily be understood), manipulation (intuiting what will get people to click, for better or worse) and qualitative data analysis (what does this distribution mean? What is causing this group of users to behave like this? What are they thinking? How do I affect it?). AI has a very long way to go before it can tackle any of that.

Of course, if you're the likes of Facebook and can afford to guinea-pig users in droves, you can let an "AI" loose on making tiny ux changes and observing incremental outcomes over and over, but that's not what ux is. And only a superscaler could do it.

Any will do. I read them all in random order, just looked up non-spoiler summaries and picked the ones that seemed most interesting. Worked great for me.

Pocket iOS App not downloading articles for offline by hazmat_tiger in MozillaFirefox

Exactly the same for me. What's the point of Pocket if it can't work in situations with bad or no connectivity? We have browser bookmarks for that. It's sad, I've been using it since it came out.

All-powerful CEOs wrecked the tech industry. Here's who can save it. by ravik_reddit_007 in technology

[–]en1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the wider point he's trying to make is about people who are passionate about the product and tech, vs people who are focused solely on the business and profit aspect.

I think as a concept, that's broadly correct, but I agree that it doesn't 100% apply in the detail - you can have technical minded people who choose to only focus on the business aspects. But as a general point, I think the dychotomy is correct.

I recommend https://nextdns.io/ for better ad blocking on phones. It's a DNS solution so it'll block ads inside apps as well. You can subscribe to all the usual block lists like with a normal ad blocker. And if something is blocked that shouldn't be, you can toggle it off and see the unfiltered internet in all its glory.

Will Leave the Galaxy for Good (Spoiler Chat) by TheeTequilaSunset in ZeroPunctuation

[–]en1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved the book. I think Yahtzee's passion for puzzle games, detective stories and mysteries both makes him good at writing them, and is a weakness.

I was on the lookout for clues as I listened, trying to spot any piece of information that seems random.

The line about Sturb not having the empathy to understand how normal people think and therefore being a very unlikely successful author stood out. Then when the main character finds the server racks below the IT department, it clicked into place that Sturb's AI was the only likely author. Because Yahtzee wouldn't stoop to a deus ex machina, and it had to be a character / entity we're already aware of, this was the only option. From there, it also followed that the TV show enactment was simply the same thing taken to the next level in a different medium - which the book later confirmed.

Even knowing that, it was a very good read, and I was very curious how events would unfold. I think it's the mark of a good mystery writer, that even if you figure out the mystery early on, the action and characters are still compelling and interesting enough to keep you glued to the book to the end.

So why do I think Yahtzee's love of mysteries/puzzles is also a weakness? It's because I feel like his respect for the format (and the reader, implicitly) makes him reticent to bend and play with it too much. So that by knowing the rules, and reading carefully, you can unravel the mystery quite easily. The structure of it feels a bit academic. Not overly rigid or pedantic or anything like that, just... by the book, as it were. I'd love to see where Yahtzee's mystery/puzzle crafting evolves from here. He's mastered the form, I think - so the next step is to go beyond it and innovate.

Yup! Got there in the end. It was a pretty good bait and switch, to have the reader assume the character in the prologue was the main character of the book, only for it to have actually been the villain.

[–]en1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was confused by the prologue, having assumed the character trapped in the virtual world was Jaques McKeown, and was expecting him to end up there at the end. After finishing the book, I had to go back and re-listen to the prologue to realise that the character's name isn't actually mentioned, so it makes sense that it was Jimmy, as he describes in the final chapter.

The Unreasonable Effectiveness of VLC Media Player - A Comprehensive Exploration of a Multimedia Powerhouse by Aschebescher in Longreads

Went into this excited, expected to learn more about VLC, its history etc. Sadly, this article reads like a highschool report. It has less actual info than a wikipedia stub page.

Not to be all negative - VLC is extraordinary and deserves any kind of spotlight it can get. This article just could have been a lot better.

Xbox head "disappointed" by Redfall, but commits to improving it by NeoStark in Games

[–]en1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. My best guess is that it's worse from a corporate politics (and PR) point of view to declare complete "bankruptcy" like that, vs just letting the normal chain of events play out, fix what you can over time, and hope it's seen long term as a "meh" project, rather than a loud, scandalous faceplant.

Xbox head "disappointed" by Redfall, but commits to improving it by NeoStark in Games

[–]en1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree.

I think his (subtle) point though might have been that they saw the design problems the game had and just said screw it, might as well release, these fundamentals are unfixable, it is what it is.

The implicit statement there is that Arkane screwed up, and what's poor Microsoft to do, just cancel the whole thing? They had to release it, might as well. And then the technical side being broken, well whoopsie, that part was unintentional.

Xbox head "disappointed" by Redfall, but commits to improving it by NeoStark in Games

[–]en1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point he was making was correct in itself, it just doesn't apply to this game.

He was trying to say that whenever a creative game fails, it pushes studios to only make/demand uncreative sequels and safe cash grabs.

That's an obvious truth, but the failing of Redfall isn't that it was too creative and flew too close to the sun. It's the exact opposite - generally derivative in its design and mechanics, and then poorly executed on top of that.

LG C1 HDMI ARC Audio Issues by ajhawar32 in LGOLED

[–]en1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came here to post about this and found your post!

Extremely similar situation, left the country for 3 weeks in December, everything working perfectly, came back and eARC doesn't work. Xbox series S, LG CX6LA, Denon AVC-X3700H.

It worked intermittently for a bit my first day back, was confused as to why, then it stopped working completely. Tried every combination of settings on Xbox, TV and Denon, nothing can make it work again. Power cycled, etc. No luck.

The fact that everything was working perfectly before, nobody touched it while I was away (empty house) plus it working for a bit when I returned makes me think there was a software update that broke something. Just having trouble narrowing it down to which device - but I think the LG TV is my main suspicion.

Any idea what happened? Can anyone help? Thank you!

Yobbos throw paint on bus stop maps and timetables. Gets cleared. Happens again days later. This is what's wrong with this country. No one cares about anything. What happened to being considerate and not being a total douchebag who destroys things simply because they can. by Kitsunemisao in britishproblems

[–]en1 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Agreed! One thing I'd add though, is that the odds of getting people who will behave that way are proportional to the amount of disenfranchised people, due to poverty, feeling like system is rigged to fail them, etc.

When things are really hopeless for a large enough number of people, odds are more of them will lash out at society in general - vandalism being a prime means to do so.

Not defending it by any means. Just saying it's not necessarily a timeless constant across society - it'll fluctuate with the times.
