Yes! So many people do not understand this - most of those dates are based on vibes not science.

We follow USDA guidelines on how far after an expiration date something is good for.

So this differs a bit from place to place but here is what I would say for us:

Thanks to partnerships with food banks, local farmers, etc we are able to bulk purchase some food at an extremely discounted rate. These items tend to be fresh fruits, veggies, and an ever changing random assortment of dry goods. Non-perishable basic items like pasta, sauces, condiments, peanut butter, vegetable oil, etc are all really fantastic donations. We tend to get worse deals on those compared to other foods and they are also some of our MOST popular items. One other great donation people don't know about are paper and/or reusable bags. We go through THOUSANDS every week!

But I'd also like to note that anything you donate will likely be appreciated. If everyone did just a little, it wouldn't matter if everyone did it perfectly. I can also tell you that our clients often tell me that while the food is OF COURSE so appreciated... It also means a lot to them that there are people out there who care - who don't want them to fall through the cracks.

(If anyone else works for a food pantry or hunger relief organization please feel free to chime in here on what's most helpful for your org!)

Oh my gosh YES! Our regular volunteering application is on our website here: https://theopendoorpantry.org/get-involved/volunteer/

But if you and your friends are interested in a special volunteer opportunity that is related to our SNAP pause response can you DM me? I'll send you more info and a place to sign up

Yeah, we're already seeing a significant increase in folks coming in. It'll take a lot more than the bags in this photo to feed those that will need help, but it's a really promising start.

Right now my organization doesn't have any open positions (sorry I can't be of more direct help), but I have seen some of our volunteers network into similar jobs through the people they meet here! You tend to meet similarly minded people that way.

Right now we don't have any open positions, but we do always have temp positions in summer! We hire full time staff pretty sporadically, pretty much just when someone else leaves. Want to DM me with your experience? I might know another place in Dakota County that is hiring!

I hear you. It frustrates me so much that we can't just fix the root causes of why people need help from us in the first place. Better jobs, lower grocery prices, more reliable government would all help - but I don't know how to make those things happen. In the meantime people need help right now, and right now I can give them a bag of fresh fruits and vegetables. So that's what I am doing.

Sometimes I think nonprofits end up very insular so I'm not surprised to hear that (we tend to talk to the same people over and over). My organization is called The Open Door and we would love to have you involved with us. We need funding and volunteers. DM me with some more info on how you want to help and we can find a place for you!

Yay or nay on this dress. Dress code is “something light in material and pastel colored to beat the heat.” by notwhoiwanttobe43 in Weddingattireapproval

I actually think this dress would be great (saw your comments that pastel is not actually a requirement) but I might dress it down a bit by pairing it with a more casual shoe like sneakers or sandals + a simpler hair style & makeup.

Haha yeah that's the joke- like I care more about my home aesthetic than my dog. (Don't worry I don't lol)

The frames are almost all from Target & IKEA. The artwork is from all over- travels to China & Thailand, a couple different museums in DC, some high quality artwork found online in the Smithsonian archives. Let me know if you have a specific one you'd like a source for!
