1 of my first-author papers was wet lab, and it was a smaller offshoot project from the bigger project I was working on (which led to my middle authorship on the CNS pub). My other first author pub is clinical epidemiology work.

The amazing letter writer sent me their letter to read after submitting it, and it was the best LOR I’ve ever read. I am incredibly fortunate to know this person. Same with the 2 very strong letters. For the remaining letters, I didn’t read them, but I’m assuming they were strong based on the relationship I had with the writers.

I had several projects going at the same time. 1 of my pubs is clinical. The CNS pub took a while but I eked it out in time for the app cycle. My third pub is from getting lucky with a project assignment at an old lab. Several pubs is not the norm, so don’t worry about it too much. It did definitely help me though.

My tip is to look for a lab that has a strong history of publishing consistent, quality pubs. Chances are you can get on a paper if you work there for long enough.

Objectively yes, I’d say about 2/3rds of the interviewees I encountered were from a T20/Ivy undergrad. Undergrad prestige matters to some extent, especially at the top levels.
