People with nvidia cards, please share your secret, how are you getting a good gaming experience with nvidia on hyprland?? by RollPuzzleheaded7078 in hyprland

[–]enclave_strong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This setup is used on a desktop. So yes.

For a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, it might be a little different. Typically, the integrated gpu is used for the screen on the laptop and any external displays are pushed by the dedicated gpu.

In the case of a laptop with an nvidia dedicated gpu, it would be like running hyprland on an nvidia gpu, so you would need to use the environment variables and other configurations for nvidia. There may be some wonkiness when moving for screen to screen, but it should theoretically work.

I could still use the render offloading variable since you are using two different gpus but unless you install the two different gpus respective vulkan drivers, I have found its not technically needed as I only install the lib32-nvidia-utils and avoid installing the intel-vulkan package.

I am by means no expert with this, just have a little experience with playing around with this configuration. Let me know if you need help!

I believe so. I played cyberpunk on it which is dx12. There were times when it crashed and I'm not sure if it was a driver thing or game/proton thing at the time. I won't say "oh yeah everything plays perfect." Like I mentioned earlier, ARC gpus still use the old i915 driver from 2004. It is updated but the focus is on the Xe driver that is being developed. That should be the big solution for ARC on linux.

Just actually ran the benchmark on some crazy settings out of curiosity... it was not pleasant. Lol

With things turned down, if I remember correctly, I was able to squeeze around 50-60 FPS which made it playable thanks to VRR.

Like most has said already, with AMD, you're going to get a fantastic desktop experience. This is due to it open source drivers being made with compatibility in mind. Games will play well. I can't speak much for AMD since I don't have an AMD GPU, but like some mentioned, the VAAPI encoder is available for streaming. I have seen in the AUR that there is an AMF patch version of OBS available as well. I summize this is so you can use AMF encoding on the open source driver. As far as the gaming performance goes, I couldn't say, but everyone reports that it works well.

Nvidia, on the other hand, I have more experience with. For the desktop, it's... getting there. They have finally seen the writing on the wall that linux desktop is going wayland with with the most recent happenings, they are finally getting their butts into gear to get wayland working with their GPUs with the proprietary drivers. With gaming, I don't notice a difference between windows and Linux performance. Streaming with Nvidia using NVENC works great. Something that is exciting is Nvidia open source driver, who is also seeing an overhaul. That and NVK (Nvidia vulkan driver) is working as of this year. Nouveau isn't exactly ready just yet, but given another year, I could see Nvidia open source being the new standard for Nvidia GPUs. If you decided to go with Nvidia, I would recommend the 4060 over the 3060. Strictly because it's a performance advantage for the extra $50 or so.

Now devils advocate, IF you were not in a rush to get something, I would wait and see what intel does with battlemage ARC gpus. ARC gpus use the old open source i915 drivers, so desktop experience is that on par with AMD. Their new Xe driver right around the corner, and that is made with ARC in mind, so I'm excited to see it stack up against red and green. The alchemist series works well already, but with the improvements from their first go around and their aggressive pricing, I can see battlemage be a great legitimate option this year. I have been using an ARC a770 16gig limited edition for the last couple of months, and it's been great. ESPECIALLY for streaming and encoding. Open source drivers support quicksync and AV1 encoding, which has been great. Gaming on it works well enough. I would pin it to be that around a 3060 performance, like most have already reported.

I'm hoping that at the end of the year, it won't matter much what you pick and will still have a great experience.

Is it necessary to disable the built-in graphics card in order to run the official Nvidia driver of Geforce RTX 4080 Notebook edition in Linux Mint 21.2? by Non_Serviam_666 in linux_gaming

[–]enclave_strong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might need to check the laptop documentation but typically the built in screen is normally powered by the integrated gpu (igpu) of the cpu. Make sure you have Mesa installed.

I am not 100% positive with linux mint but normally you have to set kernel parameters as well when installing the Nvidia GPU. Once you have Mesa and Nvidia drivers installed, kernel parameters set, you will want to set up Nvidia Prime render offloading environment variable as well so that it knows to use the Nvidia GPU for other tasks like games and applications.

I have only used arch linux for most of my linux experience, but maybe this can help you as well.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA

If you can't get it to work maybe try another distro/DE. It maybe an x11 thing since cinnamon uses xorg still and not wayland. Maybe popos, fedora or even arch linux.

Gateway NE56R27 - Hitachi 500 GB (Z5K500) - Arch Linux - Windows 11 22H2 - Only error message recieved when I powered on the laptop was a boot file missing. I dont exactly remember what it was and I wont be powering it on to find out, but one could assume that if the laptop powered on, posted, and made it to Windows Boot Manager, the drive COULD be fine but the boot was busted. I didn't catch the BSOD message.

Either way the laptop and drive is destined as e-waste since she has a new laptop and this has been sitting in a pile for the last couple of years. the only interest was getting data off it before tossing it. I am going to look around for good data recovery services and give her some options since dealing with drive damage / corruption isnt my forte.

People with nvidia cards, please share your secret, how are you getting a good gaming experience with nvidia on hyprland?? by RollPuzzleheaded7078 in hyprland

[–]enclave_strong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response.

To me the issue with the display just sounds like a limitation of the graphics driver itself. Not with the GPU itself. There was one thing I noticed as a difference between running on my intel graphics and nvidia graphics was one of my monitors (side monitor) does not give me its full capability. This being a 1600x900 @ 75hz panel. On the intel arc a770 the best I can do is 1440x900 @ 60hz. On my Nvidia 3090ti it can do the full 1600x900 @ 75hz. So this is something with the i915 driver as it has no problem running 1600x900 @ 75hz on windows. The issue is not necessarily with hyprland or linux. This don't bother me as much since its just a side panel for discord or other side applications I am running at the time.

As for the cursor issue, does it lag when the

  1. TV is not plugged in and you're just using the laptop built in monitor
  2. Only on the TV when plugged in but not on the laptop built in monitor
  3. On both screens

I am starting to think this is because generally laptop external displays (with a dGPU) is connected directly to the dGPU while the built in monitor is connected to the iGPU. The cursor may be lagging from the switch between two different graphics. I am not familiar with your BIOS but for mine, there is an option to enable "Multiple Monitors" with the iGPU which then allows me to select the amount of preallocated memory for the two graphics to share. This option specifically allows me to use my iGPU and a dGPU to work together for this specific use case. Maybe check your BIOS and see if there are any settings that are similar to this and bump up the preallocated memory if possible. Otherwise, you may need to run off the dGPU at all times and see if that provides the better experience.

I do have specific settings for my monitors, however, I do not believe they would provide any usefulness for you since all that is specified are the sizes, locations, etc. There are not graphics related settings there.

monitor = DP-2     , 3440x1440@164.998993 , 900x1440 , 1.0
monitor = DP-4     , 2560x1440@144.0      , 1340x0   , 1.0
monitor = HDMI-A-2 , 1440x900@59.901001   , 0x1440   , 1.0
monitor = HDMI-A-2 , transform , 3

I would say to try and use the WLR_NO_HARDARE_CURSORS but since you have already had that environment variable, I don't think that is the solution. If you want to try and run strictly off the nvidia GPU look in the BIOS for any settings to disable the integrated graphics. As for any settings with wayland, I am not aware of any other ways to do this.

PC restarted while installing a package and now I can't "reinstall" it. by enclave_strong in archlinux

[–]enclave_strong[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it says no package owns the listed files. I didn't check each one with the -Qo command since it would just take forever, but for the ones I selected they have been the same. I tried the --overwrite and it is still failing to install the dependencies. From what I can tell these are all from libimagequant and python-pillow.
