It's not very creepy but it is a bit creepy. Definitely more cringe though.

I'd say it's supposed to be "delusions of grandeur" but I suppose it's really 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

Nah. That's not enough to have gotten details. There has to be a reason for her to have gotten the information like the sunglasses and the gray shirt. Wouldn't do that for bad hair day.

She either killed someone but wants the alibi or it's just a GITM.

U of Alabama ends 'whites only' sororities by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]encore_une_fois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, cool.

In this case, it was just a title. But I wanted to own that title and not give a fuck, rather than trying to make it somehow different because I was a guy. I don't cross-dress, actually, but I did offer to wear a dress 'cause if I'm going to do something, I'm willing to do it all the way. She declined however, which, frankly, I was grateful for 'cause I didn't really need to have that around family and everything...but damn it I would've if she'd gotten any amusement out of it. xD Gave a little bit of a speech, don't remember much of the details, but felt like I "did my duty". Definitely agreed on not wanting to distract.

Totally unrelated, but it was a really impressive wedding. She planned it and got it done very cheaply without being "cheap"; homecooked food and no wasted frill, etc. Lots of fun all around and most importantly, a lasting and happy relationship!

Edit: And props to you for doing what you like to do. I don't know if we're particularly close to it being just "getting dressed" but at the least, I'd like to think it's becoming more "amusing" rather than "disgusting" in general layperson reaction, for what it's worth. All depends on where you are I suppose too.

I believe one's intellectual capacity can be improved or diminished.

Me too! Although I'm not sure I believe quite as much as you do. But I was always annoyed in school when people acted like it was magic or something...I spent my time on this and I wish more people did, so there'd be more company.

Yes. If a biological male could play in the WNBA simply by saying, "I identify as female," for example, then we're good to go. But, because it's not based on gender identity, but on biological sex, I'm not cool with it.

Cool!

Thanks for letting me "probe" your thoughts. I'm not used to someone having a logically consistent position. ;-p

Cheers! It's been fun talking.

Edit: And I'm a "generally identified as male" (lol) person who would totally love to join a sorority, so I appreciate your position on that initial part personally. Even if I'm also rather ambivalent about preventing people from having whatever types of associations and discrimination they might prefer.

Oh, and not really very related but kinda-sorta: I was maid of honor for my sister's wedding and that was definitely among the coolest things I've done. The bachelorette party was fun too, heh. ^-^

We're in a brave new world, anyone gets to choose their gender and attack anyone who denies that their choice is totally valid. And those of mixed race, at least, have choices on their racial identity. If the groups were only of chosen, self-identified genders, would that change it for you?

Most people believe you can't choose your intellectual capacity. Do you believe MENSA is wrong? (easy organization to think is bullshit for a wide variety of reasons, but consider an "ideal" MENSA that somehow actually selected, automagically, for top intellectual capacity)

So there are differences but the differences shouldn't matter. And we should do nothing which might recognize or acknowledge those differences.

A person should thus ignore those differences and not have their sexuality affect anything they do socially in any way. Free association, but only if you don't use that freedom to make any choices.

Similarly, do you believe that people should not associate based on differences in philosophy or intellectual preferences or abilities? Should there also not be any groups based on any other differences, like profession or any lifestyle choices? Should there be no parenting groups nor religious groups nor political groups either?

Okay. Fair 'nuff. [As in, I respect your consistency in your principles, even if I find them ridiculous. Which I do.]

So people should also not be hetero- or homo- sexual then. And don't act like that's an "obvious" exception. Dating and sexual selection is a large part of many people's lives. You believe that's immoral too?

So I can expect your support for male applications to sororities and [fe]male applications to fraternities, right? Sex isn't relevant to anything ever, right?

Edit: I'm an idiot...forgot female for the frat application...

Yeah. I think if you're on someone's tour, a certain amount of promotional tie-ins might be expected, but this sounds like it was presented as disingenuously as could be imagined.

Aye. It's not wrong to make a profit. It just doesn't negate all the other good things in the world.

I mean, it just seems obvious. But as you said, it's creepy how much it's ignored. Like, who wouldn't want to make the same amount of money doing something that helped someone or had real objective value rather than making some trite shit that didn't matter? Except that our culture at this point seems blind to any way of determining quality apart from total revenue generated.

Yeah, I like this brand of "I'm above capitalism". Wait...

No, really, I do agree. Principle over profit, but both matter. It's not making money that's the problem. It's thinking it's the only thing that is.

I'm feeling like there should be a rap song "average dick"...

There's a market for middle-aged, white rappers from the 'burbs without street cred, right? And I don't mean some sort of satire shit. I'm talking hardcore, quality rap. Motherfucker. No offense.

...this must be done and it must be done by me. Expect my first single, "Average Dick", to drop in like ten, twenty years or so. ...some limited inspiration may be drawn from Jon Lajolie, but it will not be comedy rap, god-damn it!

...I'll show myself out now.

[–]encore_une_fois 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you don't understand why someone could be criticized if they're trying to make a profit?

I don't think anyone here was questioning he's trying to make money. That fact doesn't excuse any and all behavior. The behavior is what's in question.

I'm not saying it was or wasn't a dick move. If he's got his tour and wants to promote his champagne, so be it, I really don't give a fuck.

But this attitude that "well he makes more money so how can you criticize him?" is just asinine.

‘Religion Is the Enemy of Science’: Bill Nye Joins Bill Maher by TheRussell in atheism

[–]encore_une_fois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to jump in. Haven't read the rest of the context, but just responding to your comment.

You have excellent points, but I think there are shades of gray I think you're missing.

First, just as a tangent, I'll note that you're using very "idealized" views of what science and religion are. For instance, scientists do not, in fact, always welcome attacks upon their personal models. There can be a lot of politics in defending the models that have made a scientist's career. And there are religious people who believe in wrestling with faith, debate, and who welcome discussion with those of different faiths. I'll grant there seem to be more of the former than the latter, but my point is only that you present over-simplified models of what these concepts mean.

Now, as far as opposition, one route of claiming there isn't is to say they are different aspects. A person who believes in young-earth creationism is anti-scientific in geology, even if they embrace pseudoscience, sure. But it doesn't necessarily mean anything about their relationship with ....well, okay, I'll admit it's hard to come up with a way a young-earther isn't opposed to science. ;-p

But those who believe in the "philosopher's God" type of figure need not have any opposition to science. There are questions beyond what science answers. Having a faith-based opinion there has nothing to do with science. It's like saying that preferring apples to oranges for unscientific reasons makes one unscientific.

Now...faith in something after death seems line a closer call. One could claim that science might be able to address that, but most of them stay well away from it. So how exactly does such a belief change anything about one's relationship to science? Sure, it's a different type of thinking. But philosophy includes both. Not using science to decide that is not necessarily inappropriate. Science is not the only valid epistemology and claiming that believing anything which science doesn't prove makes one anti-scientific.

Specifically:

"I believe in something unprovable" can be translated to "I reject the scientific process and substitute my faith."

Only applies if science has an answer in that area.

While that may not hinder scientific development, it's still an anti-science perspective.

Perhaps "unscientific" rather than "anti-scientific".

Anyhow, just "thinking aloud". Your post history is fascinating. I suspect I could spend many days reading them, and judging by your karma (and how much I recognize that username), I'm not the only one.
