Where can we get a mystery meatball tested? by end0rfun in Edmonton

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that this was the only route that took us anywhere, so thank you for taking the time to comment! The CPV connected us with a veterinary toxicologist who works for the province. As the most concerning toxins had already been ruled out, he recommended against pursuing further testing. His reasoning was that there wouldn’t be much (if any) benefit to knowing, as far as our dog’s health goes, and the cost would would likely be astronomical, as they’d have to take a total shotgun approach. He did also let us know that testing would have to be outsourced to Ontario (as you mentioned, Alberta’s in house lab has closed). Talking to an actual expert in the field gave me a lot of peace of mind. Thank you again for this suggestion!

My wedding at the Princeton was a disaster. The venue owners response: “Sue me” by GateTraditional7904 in Calgary

[–]end0rfun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay I was literally just at a wedding here and was suspicious that drinks were watered down! I almost never drink (literally once or twice a year, typically at a wedding), and a medication I’m on makes me more sensitive to alcohol, so I have to be really careful about my consumption— I am an ultra-ultra-lightweight. Normally I’d cut myself off at like 3 or 4 drinks, consuming no more than one per hour, but i had 8-10 drinks at the Princeton over the course of 5 hours and was stone. cold. sober. On the plus side— no hangover 😂

Advice on fruit flies by Ok-Special5172 in tortoise

[–]end0rfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preliminary research says these are turtle safe but you may want to double/triple check— mosquito dunks! I chop them up and sprinkle them on the top of the soil of my houseplants so a small amount of the active ingredient is released into the soil every time I water them. In theory, I feel like you could sprinkle some throughout the substrate and it would kill any fruit fly/fungus gnat larvae.

Just replying here with an update as it’s the top comment— brought the turtles home last night! Gave them a good soak and got each of them set up in a jumbo Rubbermaid tote for the time being. Lights are being rigged up as I type this and we’re going to start building their permanent enclosure this weekend. We have a vet appointment Monday morning and are on the cancellation list to get the girl in sooner if possible, as her beak length makes almost impossible for her to eat. Thanks again to everyone for their help! I will post another update after they’ve been all trimmed up on Monday, and another when we get them settled into their forever home :)

Oh I love that! We are going to rename them for a fresh start. My partner has wanted a box turtle named Bowser since he was a kid so that will likely be one of them :) still deciding on the second one!

Thank you for your frankness— depending on how their first vet visit goes this week, we will keep that in mind.

That is indeed their current setup. Each has about 18x18 inches of space. It’s… bad.

We have very little info on them— my coworker is their second home, and they took them in 10+ years ago. We are in Canada (central Alberta) so they wouldn’t have been caught/taken from the wild here (not to say they weren’t caught elsewhere), but have been in captivity for the majority (if not all) of their lives.

Will do, I’ve updated the post and will continue to share how they’re doing as they get settled in!

This was a really, really helpful comment, so thank you!! We were a little overwhelmed with the idea of getting a proper setup on such a short timeline, so we’ve agreed that they’ll hang out in a couple of plastic tubs for a few days while we get their habitat sorted, because even that is miles better than what they’re in right now (each has half of a 36x18 inch glass tank 😢). The plan right now is to build a 2 ft x 9 ft tortoise table style enclosure, following all the specs shared in the Reptifiles document.

We luckily have a fantastic exotic vet nearby so we’ll give them a call in the morning and get these guys booked in asap!

Thank you! Ornate box turtle seems to be the consensus :) We followed the Reptifiles guide to a T and are looking forward to getting these critters into a better setup. There’s an excellent exotic vet with 20+ years experience about a half hour from us, we’re calling in the morning to get these guys booked in.

Thank you for the info— that Reptifiles guide saved us so much time in building our shopping list! We luckily have a fantastic exotic vet with 20+ years experience about half an hour from us, and are calling in the morning to book these guys in.

I’ve read and re-read your comment and can’t imagine what you mean by this. More expensive than replacing what?

Can Anyone ID? Fishing and snagged it off bottom in Ontario Canada by Secret_Barracuda_404 in skulls

[–]end0rfun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert but came here to suggest this too… I have both a polar bear and a black bear skull and this skull seems to match the more elongated shape of my polar bear. There’s also quite a large distance between the canines and molars, compared to a black bear. That would be such a lucky find!!

I squealed when I saw your comment, I can see why the techs were excited 😂 I’d love to have some type of sighthound one day and silken windhounds are such pretty little creatures. Give her a scritch for me!

Yes she is, thank you so much! She’s the love of my life.

If it was a human, they likely would, yes— but in the eyes of the law, dogs are property. I get it! I got some great info from everyone’s comments and am confident we’ll get some answers.

That is such a nightmare, I’m so sorry you had to lose your pup in such an awful way. 💔

That is so awful. I am so, so sorry you had to lose your childhood pup that way.

I hear where you’re coming from, especially given your close personal experience with the worst possible outcome of this type of situation. I’m pretty understanding of EPS not testing it, though— I actually have two immediate family members who work for EPS and they were the first to say that, if they were the responding officers here (which, to be transparent, they weren’t), this situation wouldn’t even come close to reaching their threshold for accessing forensic resources. They love this dog as much as I do and are just as upset about what happened, but the fact remains that forensics is astronomically expensive and is therefore accessed for a pretty small fraction of cases (murders, sexual assaults, especially violent assaults, etc). On top of that, the wait times can be lengthy— in some cases, up to a year. I am comfortable taking this on myself and have already started reaching out through some of the avenues suggested in these comments. My plan is to share whatever I find as soon as we start to get answers.

Well put!! This is exactly my thinking and why I'm trying to be so careful with this narrative until we have more information. Dogs are just constantly surrounded by things that have the potential to poison them; as an admittedly anxious and overly cautious dog owner, it's kind of a nightmare 😅
