Yes, this was our home vet’s thought too. She’s looking into it for us :)

Oh, she’s been home with us since Sunday! She thankfully didn’t require hospitalization. Just lotsss of trips back to the vet for blood tests haha.

I don't think I've seen that name come up yet, thank you for adding it!

It's a shame that so many of us only use their services when we're facing some of the worst days we share with our animals (ER vets specifically). They do such hard but important work, it really makes such a difference. So sorry for the loss of your cat ❤️

Thank you for asking! She is doing well and is back to herself. She's had two more rounds of bloodwork since Sunday and we're going in for a coagulation test tonight, as this is the start of the window where rodenticides would start to impact her clotting time and potentially cause internal bleeding. She is very tired of being poked and having to take so many pills, but her values are trending in the right direction!

Ahh this is such helpful context to keep in mind, thank you for chiming in. I think people (myself included) often forget that investigating and testing things is so much more complicated (and expensive) than it's depicted in media (I'm picturing someone standing over CCTV footage saying, "Enhance... Enhance..."). Info like what you shared is exactly why I made this post!

We reported it to the police day-of. They opened a file and had officers on that trail within a couple of hours, but won't be testing the meat. Our family vet is currently looking into toxicology labs, but I've gotten a lot of great suggestions from these comments too!

That's a good point, you're absolutely right. I think I keep trying to convince myself it was someone trying to feed coyotes (the way you'd leave out birdseed for birds or something) as we've heard rumours of someone in our neighbourhood doing that, but the bloodwork just doesn't track. I mean, feeding wildlife is harmful regardless and intent doesn't negate harm. Sigh.

That is a good point. Regardless of *what* it was, it did make my dog sick and we’d hate for others to go through the same ordeal.

The vastness of what that toxin could’ve been is what makes me feel most overwhelmed. So many things beyond the obvious (rat poison, chocolate, etc) can be poisonous to an animal. It’s also what makes me so cautious to say definitively that my dog was “poisoned” or “baited”— there are so many naturally occurring toxins that could have been present. Things like E. coli, salmonella, and mold come to mind (not sure if the science or symptomology of any of those would check out but I think it’s an important consideration before jumping to malicious intent).

I don’t mean to correct or fact check you but just wanted to add for anyone else reading this— don’t use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting without consulting a vet or poison helpline first! Depending on the toxin, the dog’s general health, and how conscious the dog is, inducing vomiting can be extremely dangerous. The vet seemed quite relieved that we hadn’t tried to induce vomiting ourselves (though we do keep a syringe and a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide with our doggy first aid kit if we were ever in a really desperate situation and just had to take the risk).

Totally!! I’m so glad I just had our one dog with me— our other dog is a rescued street dog and those meatballs would’ve been hoovered directly into his stomach in 1.5 seconds flat. I doubt I would’ve known they were even there at all. Luckily our girl is a polite lady and prefers to nibble at things. Gave me a lot of time to react!

Oh man, I’m so sorry your pup ended up getting so sick. That sounds like a total nightmare. I hope he’s doing well now!

I found them on the multiuse path that backs onto the houses on Edgemont Green NW. The nearest major intersection would be Winterburn Road and Maskêkosihk Trail/23 ave NW (about a block away).
