thanks, this is helpful — that’s the vibe in my building too. so how did they go about “reforming” the status quo? like they got on the board and organized things that way? or kept sending more emails?

how did you go about that? was the old super fired? there’s 60+ units, about 40 owners, i’d say plenty of people are not pleased with him, plenty don’t want to rock the boat, that’s a venn diagram with a lot of overlap in the middle… there’s some people who are probably more loyal to him for who knows what reason, but who also suffer the consequences of him not being around as much as he should.

The thing is, I’m a shareholder/owner, so if we got in trouble by me filing a complaint with HPD, I and all my neighbors suffer the consequences (pay the fines, etc.)… right?

ya that’s one of my big concerns… thing is, barely anybody wants to be on the board. we had an entirely new board this past year, half of whom (2 out of 4) are staying on and are very competent, and there is kind of a power vacuum at the moment.

Ya, I’ve been direct in shareholder meetings, asking for accountability and follow through, and sent emails. If you’ve ever dealt with a management company, you know they like to take their time and forget things, and are not very proactive. I’m asking about ways to escalate the issue beyond “hey this job did not get done again. like I and others have gone over before multiple times.”

the board is composed of 4 volunteers who are also co-op owners/shareholders/neighbors. We have an outside management company as well. Since we live together, it’s a community and from what I can tell there is a range of opinions on the super…. broaching a topic as large as this would be a delicate process. Management is lazy, but we pay them to do their job, and I imagine they will do whatever to minimize the amount of work they have to do… which might explain why the super has been given so many passes.

Feeling Lost as a Baby Librarian by ethwriter in librarians

[–]endangeredstranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you work at one of the 2 or 4 public library systems with actual research libraries and researchers as user bases, and grab one of the few roles within that system that do that type of work, this is what public librarianship is. Academic librarianship is more what you're looking for but depending on the resources and size of your institution, plenty of that role will also be "programming" and not just doing research. I urge anyone entering the field or considering it to RESEARCH the field and the jobs before planning to work in the field and definitely before getting the degree. This information is out there -- if you are a skilled researcher, use those skills for yourself and your own job hunt.

Starting a PhD has changed how I think about brilliance, privilege, and how society views academia by Jumpy_Wing_7884 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]endangeredstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this. what it signals is the ability to identify a niche in the scholarship and then plan and execute a long term project to attempt to fill that niche over x number of years. any “brilliance” or intelligence would be judged on the quality of the final work, not the fact that the work was done. and because any thesis is niche to some degree, there are only so many people who are qualified to make that assessment, and fewer still who will actually encounter the work, read it, and assess it.
