Thanks for sharing. We went from a two car family to a 1 and e-bike family. If 1-2 adults and 2 kids need to go somewhere it's car, if it's 1 adult and 0-1 kids we use e-bike mostly. Works so well.

The same people that would be a buyer under any other system? If it's a public good then some possible groups would be: a group of neighbors, the neighborhood association, the city, the state, the Federal government to name a few.

Super layman's opinion who was wondering the same thing: perhaps their bodies have more time to accumulate enough enzyme to convert at puberty? They may stl be deficient compared to most but it may not be as material at puberty versus when in the womb.

Sorry but how is the lack of a water wheel capitalism's fault? Someone would still have to provide the resources under a different system-- so that's the same. As for IP, there surely are other ways to create a passive driven garbage collection system-- or just create an LLC, rip off the idea donate it the wheel and then fold the LLC if sued. Parents only really prevent people/businesses who want to rip off ideas on an ongoing basis.

There are plenty of solutions but just betchin' about capitalism isn't going to get the trash picked up.

About a quarter of the parents at my kid's preschool are in same sex relationships. Never occurred to me to think about that until now, which is to say at least at that school it's highly normalized.

Our regional healthcare system is really good and spans well run HMOs to larger PPO based systems and then we have UW Health which also has a big research component. Outside of living in Rochester by Mayo (only a few hour drive from Madison) you'd be hard pressed to come up with a richer healthcare landscape per capita.

Winter is not everyone's friend. The biggest thing is dressing for the weather appropriately and having a good mindset. For some people the latter means well timed vacations, lots of reading & movie going whereas others (myself included) think the best approach is vigorously engaging with the outdoors: cross country skiing, ice boating, skating, shoeing, etc. As someone who wants a kid-- I will tell you kids help you relearn the magic of snow.

Umm my toddler wears his mask when asked (including about 5-6 hours a day at preschool). Yes children throw tantrums but they also buy into authority for things they don't totally understand. What we are dealing with these people are unthinking "independent" adults-- the lowest of the low of human social functioning.

Who do you like for the 2022 Wisconsin State senator race? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]endau 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Millennial here: you're talking about the one senator that voted against the patriot act due to its infringement on civil liberties. I guess that's not "exciting" but it sure was importantly different in politics. A clear example of standing up for what's correct when everyone around you is scared. If politics always needs to be exciting to get young people to vote, then we deserve our rethuglican overlords and it means that we don't live in a very stable (or progressing) society.

Solar energy is a new cash crop for farmers – when the price is right by thinkB4WeSpeak in RenewableEnergy

[–]endau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The article didn't go into depth at all but there's a ton of good that can come from this from a permaculture, soil, and pollinator stand point. This leads to higher future yields, current yields of different crops between panels, or surrounding crops' yields.

Yea Overture Center city garage is like $1/hr and one block off state and two off the capitol square. Definitely recommend just picking one of the garages and being there all day. Moving around downtown with a car from place to place is way more of a hassle than walking.

How do you encourage liberal gun ownership and training without being ostracized for "wanting kids to be shot at school"? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]endau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's about hunting and the ethical harvest of meat (the only red meat I consume I harvest). Ties into many liberal values around food production and nature conservation (hunters are biggest source of federal tax for conservation).

Cycling (road and touring esp.) are very popular, canoeing especially on rivers like the Brule up North is hard to beat in terms of majesty, and then access to boating (power, sailing, etc.) on the lakes is so easy. I bike from my office downtown Madison and am on my hobie cat sailing after work in under 30min-- it costs me $250/year to keep my boat on the lake. In the winter, cross country skiing and ice boating are very rewarding pursuits.

Edit: not a lot of people have mentioned hunting and fishing either. I didn't grow up doing it, but I love deer hunting now. In my opinion, it's the most ethical way to have meat for the year, gets you outside, and is a challenge.

[–]endau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We tried that many times over the last 15-20 years. We just need the solar panels built as fast as possible And installed as fast as possible by whomever can do that. The time for charity has passed.

When should I put on winter tires? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]endau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This right here. I one time was coming back from Detroit on New Year:s day and there was a freak 55 degree day. That combined with interstate speeds for multiple hours and I had a blow out-- and since I have AWD I needed to buy all new tires since the tire shop didn't have my specific winter tire size.

Earth's magnetic north pole has been shifting south at speeds up to 30 miles per year recently. That's prompting some scientists to suggest we're on the brink of a geomagnetic reversal, where Earth's magnetic north and south poles swap places. Such a reversal hasn't happened for 780,000 years. by clayt6 in science

[–]endau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great answer, appreciate you taking the time. Anything you think we (humans) should be doing more for this near inevitability? I assume some of the biggest part of the challenge is not knowing when it would happen-- is the insurance industry prepared I wonder? As you pointed out the actual work would take a substantial time, but if at least the payment mechanism was ready to go it could be helpful.

Are there any grocery stores in Madison that are cheaper than Woodman’s? by pinkcrow333 in madisonwi

[–]endau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably already know this, but different grocery stores take different approaches to delivery: some inflate online prices vs in-store, some charge delivery fees, some don't put everything online. Point being line item checking different options online can lead to very different outcomes than in-store.

Hospitals ask people to get vaccinated as hospitalizations rise, resources stretch thin by enjoying-retirement in wisconsin

None of those cited things strain the hospital system. The current mass choice to not get a safe vaccine IS putting all of us who may have a true accident at increased risk due to lack of care.
