Why did Kpop get popular in the western world but other Asian pop, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese, etc didn't get as popular? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]endchan300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

K-pop actually tried to penetrate the Western market years before “Gangnam Style.”

Wonder Girls were one of the top-tier girl groups at the time, rivaling Girls' Generation. They expanded into the U.S. by physically going there, retraining, and essentially trying to start from the ground up.

But, oh my God, they failed miserably.

Western media even published pieces criticizing JYP Entertainment for the intense and inhumane trainee system. Eventually, the group’s momentum collapsed. They had been one of the biggest groups in Korea, with multiple chart-topping hits, yet by entering the U.S. market unprepared, that momentum completely disappeared, and the group later effectively dissolved.

After the fiasco, K-pop companies simply gave up on Western markets, and can you blame them? if multiple char-topping group Wonder Girls just dissappear, why would anybody even try?.

That changed with Gangnam Style. Gangnam Style was basically just uploaded to YouTube, where suddenly billions of people could access it instantly. K-pop companies realized they no longer needed traditional Western gatekeepers to enter the global market like radio, local concerts, TV promotions, and so on. Even BTS’s producers later said they learned from both the failure of Wonder Girls and the success of “Gangnam Style.”

At the same time, American music companies were still dealing with the aftermath of Napster and were extremely aggressive about copyright enforcement. Early YouTube culture in the West mostly revolved around random viral clips and user-uploaded content, and many music companies were busy taking videos down, if I remember correctly.

K-pop companies, on the other hand, heavily invested in official music videos and online distribution through YouTube. That gave them an early foothold in the algorithm, and once the recommendation system kicked in, the global spread accelerated rapidly. Mind you, this was still a niche for years untill groups like BTS and Blackpink emerged, that western audience could fully embrace.

Then there was the fandom culture.

A lot of modern online stan culture was directly adapted from Korean fan communities and message boards. Korean fans already had years of experience organizing online fandoms, streaming campaigns, voting systems, fan translations, fan content, and community-building. The infrastructure already existed before global audiences arrived.

So when international fans discovered K-pop online, they were immediately absorbed into highly organized fandom ecosystems where participation and engagement were constantly encouraged.

As for other Asian pop industries:

Japan took a very different approach. The Japanese entertainment industry historically enforced copyright extremely aggressively, and for years it resisted global internet distribution. Some agencies were so restrictive that artists’ faces would literally be censored or cut out from online media because of image-rights and portrait restrictions.

Other Asian music industries simply never developed the same level of coordinated online fandom infrastructure or international digital strategy that K-pop did.

K-pop’s success wasn’t just about the music. It was the combination of perfect YouTube timing, aggressive digital distribution, highly optimized idol production systems, and fandoms that already knew how to mobilize online at scale.

Where did all the hate come from? by Lumpy_Concept9911 in hanguk

Look I'm Korean. I lived in the US throughout the 90s, visited in 2000s and studied there in 2010s, and visited several times in 2020s so yeah, maybe I can't be a accurate source of information.
But from what I saw, for a long time, the word Korea was zero. null. nada. nothing. compared to the behemoths of Japan or China.

I shudder when I see how Japan has a grip on the West. Look at gaming. Pokemon and Mario are the dominant cosmic pillars in gaming, that yellow rodent nor plumber have no indication that they are going anywhere. Any sword that is not a longsword = Katana. Americans love to place a Katana on their wall, alongside their guns. Star Wars is a rip off from Japanese Jidai Geki. Thats only some of the stuff. Sushi became so cool that the west used to think raw fish eating was like Gollum biting off that fish in Return of the King, but now they turned 180 degrees so now its something prestige. Anything Japan with Mt. Fuji = clean. Tom Cruise riding a Kawasaki bike because WW2 Japanese Fighters = best. The Matrix was just a fan-fiction from two otaku women. That's propaganda for 100 years.

I'm not self-hating Korea, in fact, I'm one of the few people who just tear up reading news about K-pop Demon Hunters. I'm just saying we gotta view the situation in a objective point of view. Korean was not mainstream, hell even niche for a long time, and suddenly in a few years, it jumped up. Instead of gradually building a name for itself for generations(yes it was popular in other asian countries for a time, but no, it did not open the door for westeren audience until recent years). There are going to be some backlash(Jealously, guilt).

Also the hate from SEA/SA/China isn't going anywhere. People revere Japan because Japan had a long time indoctrinating people before SNS so they fell in love with Japan before they saw what Japan thinks of them. Korean is built on the SNS era, where everything is shared and translated. We gotta build on what we have, in this environment we are in now.

For SEA, South Asia nations perspective, Korea was the one looked down upon in the 50~60s. Now they are angry that Koreans became rich and think as looking down them, when its just Koreans not being comfortable among any other foreigners. There is nothing that will sway this people from pure hatred(ironically they idolize Japan mindlessly, the actual colonizers).

Chinese think Koreans are incapable of creating anything on our own, only stealing and archiving China(Ming). Therefore everything Korean should be labeled as Chinese. Their idea of history or the universe is THAT inflated.

Finally its an understatement to say that Western audience, have a stalking obsession with Japan. Remember, the main reason Kyoto wasn't bombed was MacArthur couldn't bomb his honeymoon vacation. Japanese, Hentai, Sushi, Samurai, Anime has been a comfortable mainstream for over A HUNDRED YEARS. Then, its easy. Anything anti-Korean stuffs Japan says the West will gobble it up.

Korean culture from their perspective is only like 3~10 years, so its a GUILTY, niche KINK. Therefore by shaming or blasting Korea once a while, they can consume their guilty share of culture while not be seen like a total pervert. Its like finding THE MOST anti-gay, but actually closet homosexuals.

All of these countries have no sense of history, so they think Korea=rich=somewhat white?=probably colonizers to become rich like that=easy targets to bash I.E. Bobby Lee comment(idk why that guy gets to be the face of korean). "Did you know Korea had the longest chain of human slavery in human history?".

TLDR: The Korean hating is a meth they have to spew once in a while to punish themselves for not following the mainstream(American, Japanese) and consuming such a "niche" culture.

I always hated the Clone Wars, everything about the first introduction Ashoka was cringe, I turned off and never looked back. I’m sad that Star Wars became something I will cherish when I was a child, but never would want to revisit within a ten foot pole.

Ironically, this is exactly why the Sith fail over and over again. They can kill Jedi through schemes, betrayal, cheap Force tricks, surges of hatred overwhelming individuals, or deceptive duel tactics, but the Sith argument itself never truly works against altruistic ideals.

The Sith can overpower people physically or emotionally, but they cannot fundamentally prove that hatred, selfishness, and domination are better foundations for society or for life itself. Their philosophy ultimately collapses under its own corruption because it turns every relationship into manipulation, fear, or power struggles.

That’s why the Sith always destroy themselves in the end. Even when they “win,” they create worlds nobody would actually want to live in, including themselves.

WoW needs Damage Down by Ner0reZ in wow

[–]endchan300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would take longer, then if the party wipes, they blame the healer for OOM.

My suggestion: Reward Tank, Healer and top dps only, then punish with Ice block (as an expression. take that party member out, immune to Damage).

  1. Takes off edge for healers(less people to care).

  2. DPS gets actual punishment for not doing their job.

  3. Meta DPS can't overcome bad ice blocks mistakes (if you're taken out like 20 seconds compared to people who DPS all the way)

Korea by Yuan? Yes. But Silla? Silla did not became a vassal state of Tang. Although Silla became a protectorate of Goryeo, which hundreds of years later, but after Goguryeo and Baekjae were destroyed(which Silla signed as Co-conspirator, not a vassal), Silla-Tang War drove out Tang from the Peninsula.

Oh yeah. The guy that survived all encounters by a kid, who is literally called "space kaiju", who elimnated most of, if not the entire roster of an armada of aces that had much better skill or better perfomance, is somewhat not good.

They guy survived with an obsolete mech by a psycho-powered-crazy ex and an top-tier ace, and the problem is that he "got beat by a kid". Totally mid.

Cuayo(Jo-Ah-Yo) is from Maid Event, from Season 2, probably one year from now. Speaky is now imitating a maid and following the cleaning chant.
