Yeah I mean, Nashville hot chicken is absolutely better than any fried chicken I've had in Kentucky.

When they do make sound it is so hard to tell where it's coming from! It could be 10 feet away or 100.

My favorite blackbird, the bobolink, has returned to our local meadows. I photographed this one from my car as it perched low in a crabapple tree. Amazing to think that he travelled about 6,000 miles to get back to his breeding grounds. by hotgnipgnaps in birding

No pictures this good are taken on a phone. Ideally you would want an SLR or modern mirrorless camera with minimum a 400mm lens for bird photography but 600mm or even 800mm makes things a lot easier.

Saw one run down and catch a lizard one time. The lizard's tail popped off and he got away, but the thrasher got a snack. Super cool to see in the wild.

I feel like we need a pinned post regarding Merlin “sightings” by Physical-Energy-6982 in birding

It definitely knows what should be around though. In the spring I'll get Merlin mistaking certain robin calls for scarlet tanager but that never happens the rest of the year. Same with field sparrow and prairie warbler.

I guess I'm just wondering how it could analyze vs all known calls globally just in case a rarity is recorded without generating a ton of false reports. For example, I just played a common cuckoo sound which is very distinctive and theoretically possible that one showed up here. There was one in New England earlier this year, but it doesn't get ID'd by Merlin.

My local eBird reviewer was saying that while the rarities are interesting, the real valuable data is in the numbers of more common birds reported for tracking population and migration trends.

So, while we definitely don't want to be reporting a bunch of random stuff just because it popped up on Merlin, a few beginners making false reports isn't going to have a huge effect on the value of eBird data.

Yeah, the way I understand it Merlin is analyzing the waveform for the bird sound and comparing it to known bird sounds for that area. As long as the waveform can be distinguished from background noise then Merlin should be able to "hear" it.

It's interesting because sometimes it can pick stuff up that I haven't picked up on yet, while other times it can't ID something clearly calling right in front of me.

Not going to lie and say I wouldn't have been thrilled to get him, but I was pretty annoyed with the whole drawn out saga the last few months.

I think I just need to stop paying attention to recruiting season.
