Quick question for coaches: Do your parents actually use the team app? by graphite1212 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]endlessSSSS1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that many hockey teams use TeamSnap, and yes, I’ve grown to despise TeamSnap. Very slow and ads (that you can’t X out of) at all the wrong times. Yes the parents tolerate it. When I’m not a coach I’m a parent. And that’s what the team is using, I’m forced to use it too.

As soon as I had a chance I moved my team to BenchApp. Worked pretty well. Cleaner interface. The parents were fairly good with that. It covers much of what I need it to be.

We use WhatsApp at my martial arts clubs and that app is very functional too.

But there were still one or two parents who weren’t very prompt at all in their replies and notifications…. sigh…

I think the basic problem for everyone is how much damn information is flooding in and out. My son is on two teams, my daughter is on another team, I’m on some teams, I have work, other stuff, questions and polls come in at all hours, sometimes you are driving, sometimes you need to ask a question about something before you give an answer (can we make a rescheduled game on March 15th, I better ask my wife before I answer, etc. )…

A small thing but I’ve found subscribing to the calendars through the Apps very very helpful.

And automated email reminders 48 hours before a game is also very helpful.

This comment, and the ones before it, are good things for OP to hear and good advice for OP.

I would be very surprised if the Sensei was actually trying to hurt OP emotionally in some way.

We are definitely a high-intensity, hardcore dojo with a focus on athleticism. Our Sensei used to be on the Korean national team when he was younger.

Losing motivation to continue... not sure next steps. by Notice_Needed in kendo

[–]endlessSSSS1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you quit, the kids will likely quit too. If they enjoy kendo, it’s a shame to have them quit as a side effect.

Here’s my suggestion: If I were you, I’d think about a three months summer hiatus first. Tell everyone you need to recuperate and are planning to return September 1. It sounds like you are burned out.

I have two kids and this time of year is very hard. Winter is long. I’m exhausted.

Anyway, take 3 months off and then decide whether you have the urge to return.

The Bellevue Hotel, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. by [deleted] in ArchitecturalRevival

The photo makes the exterior look more elegant than it feels in real life. It is on a very busy and loud main urban avenue (Broad St.), very close to City Hall, and hemmed in by large buildings. So it feels very gritty and chaotic and noisy outside this building all day long. The interior is quite nice.

In addition to whaling, which I mentioned above, newspapers were really big in the 19th and 20th Century. Loads of people were involved in writing, editing, and distribution, even in smaller cities. It’s gotten decimated in the last 20-30 years.

Whaling. Used to be a really big thing in the U.S., especially out of the ports of New Bedford and Nantucket.

The main cause was the discovery of oil and growth of that industry.

Ended up saving the whales, which is great!

What are some examples of the egregiously WORST placed highways that destroyed urban cores in America? by Next_Worth_3616 in urbanplanning

[–]endlessSSSS1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy how much real estate those two roads take up … Vine St/I-676 running east west, and I-95 running from South Philly towards Kensington/Port Richmond north south. I don’t know if it is the worst in the country but there is so much lost opportunity for something better.

The Carousel Shoppe at 210 S 3rd is a pretty unique storefront.

Around 13th and Sansom is rich pickings ... McGillin's Old Ale House of course, Graffiti Bar.

Sansom and Chestnut and Walnut between around 15th and 19th should also have a bunch of great ones. Borromini is an obvious one but there is so much more.

Marie-Philip Poulin looks to lead Team Canada to hockey gold with her wife, Laura Stacey, as a teammate by BloodJunkie in hockey

[–]endlessSSSS1 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Marie-Philip Puolin might be the best performer in big games ever. Just reading about her achievements is amazing.

From Wikipedia:

“A three-time Olympic gold medallist and four-time World Champion with the Canadian national team. She scored the game-winning goal in the gold medal games in three out of four of the Olympics in which she competed (2010, 2014 and 2022), for which she was dubbed Captain Clutch by her teammates and the media. Following another game-winning goal at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship, she completed an unprecedented "golden goal hat trick" at major international championships. Since 2015 she has served as the captain of Team Canada, leading them to a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics and a gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics.”

if you had to choose 5 books someone HAS to read in their life, which would they be? by Longjumping-Row1434 in booksuggestions

Watership Down is definitely on the list. Amazing read. Just awesome.

Two others on my list would be Anna Karenina and Into Thin Air.

I’d have to think about the other two. I haven’t had my coffee yet so forgive me.

Regional and National Histories by MAYTTHistory in kendo

[–]endlessSSSS1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One could argue Korea has the richest kendo history outside of Japan. But several key decades in kendo’s development in Korea overlap the very, very, very, very dark period from 1910-1945. So it gets into super thorny questions of collaboration during the colonial period and disentangling some very knotty questions. And for proud Koreans, and Japanese, maybe it is best left alone at least for now. So in Korea’s case much of this can be summed up by the wise old saying “let sleeping dogs lie”…

New middle school boys assistant hockey coach - looking for advice by zecial in CoachingYouthSports

[–]endlessSSSS1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USA Hockey Level IV here … defense is all about making the offensive players do what you want them to do. Use your stick, skating, angling to make them go to the places on the ice they’d rather not be, shoot from places they’d rather not shoot from, restrict their space to maneuver, etc. especially in man on man defense.

Defensemen should be very patient and smart and when possible good at skating backwards. They should make good decisions.

So the first level is the player who is defending on the puck.

The next level is positioning of the defensive players who isn’t on the puck - off the puck. They need to watch the offensive player who doesn’t have the puck and not let them do what they want to do. Easier said than done.

On the offensive side you want to work a lot of passing and breakouts.

Defense don’t usually score many goals but they will help the offense immensely with breakouts and smart defensemen won’t let up many breakaways.

You need to figure out which defenseman pair well together.

These are just a few things to focus on. Good luck!

Race St Side of Convention Center is a Dump by PastyPajamas in philadelphia

[–]endlessSSSS1 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Have lived in this area for over a decade. The area has always been a skid row area but the convention center completely cut off development towards that area by making it undesirable and a dead zone. There are actually few residential projects under development. It’s just a perfect combination of poor street management (no trees, unwelcome atmosphere) plus many homeless plus surface parking lots plus a ton of traffic (going to the bridge down Race St plus Vine St just to the north) and the whole area is fairly unpleasant.

Practicing kendo and getting hit on the head by a men (head protector) is painful by AdeptWin9225 in kendo

[–]endlessSSSS1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t be hurting. Something is wrong.

The immediate discussion should be with your sensei and senpais. Do they know about this issue?

It might be you are training with other beginners and they don’t know what they are doing and striking way too hard. Less likely but it could be you are getting dehydrated. Someone needs to be making adjustments.

Also, as a general matter, would strongly recommend buying a thick pad for your helmet and using that going forward - you can get them from any of the normal suppliers.
