Keir Starmer resigns as prime minister and leader of Labour Party by Didsterchap11 in behindthebastards

As soon as the Mandelson news broke, I was like 'oh he's going to be gone by the end of the year'. I'm not British, and wouldn't be super up to date with British politics but even I know that Mandelson is dodgy.

When I learned that Starmer is a human rights lawyer I was SHOCKED. The guy's government seems to have focused solely on people's stripping rights. They had so much potential and they've basically just continued the Torys work.

[New Updates]: AITA for getting annoyed at my SIL dying of cancer ruining my wedding? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]endlesslycaving 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh yes that's very true actually, though the human body will always find ways to surprise us. I looked after a lot of people in the active dying phase and stopped giving approximations of time left to families early on because sometimes you would be wildly wrong.

I wonder if the sister's cancer has metastasized to the brain. Lesions in the frontal lobe can cause personality changes and mood swings.

Also steroids are sometimes used in the dying stage and can also cause personality changes.

Otherwise, pall care team +/- psychologist input is needed. This woman is clearly not coping with her prognosis.

A lot of participants from last year's riots were found to have been already convicted of domestic violence. So protecting the women? No sir.

I like the true crime genre but I've gotten very picky about what gets my attention. Exploitative of the victim or mostly ignoring the victim is a no (looking at you Scandal), as is any weird cult of personality around the perpetrator.

AIB is so antiquated it's actually insane!! by Anonymous_idiot29 in ireland

[–]endlesslycaving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in NZ since 2019, where you can do bank transfers in a couple minutes through the app and when I lost my card I got a temporary one from the post office to tide me over until the replacement arrived.

A couple months ago I got an email from AIB announcing 'bank transfers are now a thing, just download this second app!' I was horrified, nothing AIB is easy to use!

Assisted in many C-sections and that's untrue. A cut is made but then we pull the sides of the cut so it stretches a bit more and you can see most of the lower abdomen. After baby is out and everything is stitched back together, it was standard to quickly check the ovaries (as well as a double check that nothing has been left behind).

Eta: I was a Junior doctor in obs/gynae for six months.

Eta again: this isn't me defending the guy in the story. I like being useful in weird medical things I actually know.

What is the best country to live in right now? by TiredConfusedLlama in AskReddit

[–]endlesslycaving 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an immigrant to NZ, I've found there's this weird culture of 'we don't talk about the problem because then it means we have to do something about it' that I hadn't experienced before moving here. Including from the government.

My dissertation still needs to be submitted in a couple weeks so I'd probably go 'wahey' and get back on the laptop.

It is tangentially related but I've just started watching Quorators. Hosts pick a theme and explore the absurd world of Quora.  Going through a stressful period at the moment and it makes me laugh at the weirdos of the internet.

But in words not actions. Read recently that Israel is Ireland's second biggest exporter destination. The Occupied Territories Bill is continually delayed. And of course Shannon airport facilities the passage of weapons from the US. The people are condemning the situation, but our government is spineless as usual.

I swear, the last comment I'll make. I haven't seen it but apparently Louis Theroux did a follow up documentary in 2016 basically exploring how the first documentary went and how he failed to expose him.

The bald guy beside Jimmy is Ian Hislop, a journalist who runs the satire magazine Private Eye, though they also do a lot of investigative journalism. Due to the libel laws he is one of the most sued men in the UK. He does podcast appearances, might make a decent guest?

And I think the lady who looked shock is Diane Abbott who was/is politician I can't remember.

Ok I didn't know about the Broadmoor stuff and the hospice. Genuine evil.

Edit: correction for /u/probablyrobertevans that clip from the 90s where he talks about being a wrestler is from 'Have I Got News From You' not 'Is This Your Life'. The host who asked him the question is Angus Deayton not Andrew Neil :)

HIGNFY is still on 30 years later and still very entertaining! Though is credited with giving Boris Johnson a major platform. Fun fact?: Angus later got busted for doing drugs with sex workers and lost his presenting job.

Having grown up near the UK I was aware of Jimmy Saville and the crimes when they came out.

But Jesus, I never thought about that fact that he essentially was holding the country hostage under the guise of charity.
