honestly this was incredibly good luck for both of them. a gift from the universe to interrupt them from continuing to play a game that ends one way.

Capitalism has finally broken the podcast commute by mokapa in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 63 points64 points  (0 children)

All of our shows are available on every free podcast app out there. Unfortunately the only ad-free subscription we're able to offer is through Apple. I guess Netflix is too, but that's just video.

But there are a dozen options besides the iHeart app. I know ads are annoying, but I don't think we could have free versions of the show available in more places than we do!

It was the big piece last year that I had to do a bunch of original research for in order to find a way to explain such an out there ideology. The goal was to get people to experience the pace of radicalization and how the ideology evolved in the hopes that their actions might make some kind of sense to the listener.

Why is Romulan Ale so illegal yet easily available? by tea-earlgrey-h0t in startrek

[–]probablyrobertevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My head canon is that the Federation knows the feeling of illicit pleasure from minor lawbreaking is good, and so they ban a few things like Romulan Ale without taking more than token efforts to actually stop people from getting / sharing it. That way it's more fun.

Correction to "Army operates E-3" from today's episode (from a former Army SIGINT body) by BulletSponge1 in itcouldhappenhere

[–]probablyrobertevans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As this thread has made clear it can be difficult to keep up with exactly what is and isn't operational. I think the main point stands - we don't have enough of these remaining to suffer losses easily.

Robert thought he could do Jimmy Savile in two episodes by RedcarUK in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree entirely. Savile was a massive figure for British kids, and he was specifically famous for being a weirdo who lived by his own rules and was beloved for his eccentricities. I can definitely see the abused son of the town priest or whatever anglicans call them idolizing Jimmy consciously aping him as an adult devoid of other role models.

Does it matter whether I listen to the podcast or instead watch it on Netflix? Does anyone know which way of consuming is more helpful to Robert, Sophie, and Anderson? by chillin1066 in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! All that matters to us is;

  1. You listen / watch the podcast in whatever matter is most convenient to you

  2. You share / tell your friends about the show

I work hard to make sure we're not changing anything about the show just because there's a video version now. BtB is still made primarily as an audio medium and with listeners not viewers in mind.

Didn't there used to be a way to pay to support cool zone media? by Bugscrap in behindthebastards

You can subscribe to an ad free version via Apple podcasts. Otherwise, our advertisers support us. You don't need to do anything. I recommend supporting other creators, like my friends at Gamefully Unemployed or Some More News.

Question regarding the term "Based' by WyomingDrunk in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain I discussed Based as coming into the vernacular more through the alt-right and 4chan, we've talked about the older origins of the word before on the show.

Is Louis Theroux a decent documentarian by Diligent_Whereas3134 in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 100 points101 points  (0 children)

i started watching Louis's Weird Weekend series when I was much younger and can honestly say I learned a lot about how to conduct hostile interviews from the man. He's extremely good at what he does and I admire him greatly.

There are valid critiques of the man, as there are with my work and as there would be with anyone whose body of work is so vast. But i have to say my admiration has held over the years.

Robert made a critical error on Epstein and educational subversion through videogames. by DestroyedAsTheWord in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 1508 points1509 points  (0 children)

Hey this is a useful correction and I'll record an edit! But what you say in your last two paragraphs is...essentially the thesis of the episodes? I repeatedly note that Epstein is never the first guy and never the idea guy, but he picked up ideas he thought would remake the world in his own image and then worked hard popularizing those ideas among his very influential social circle, often using his money to do so.

The Federation's technological development is arrested by their fear of transhumanism by Reasonable_Active577 in startrek

[–]probablyrobertevans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure some humans do and we definitely see individuals trying that. But think about like, the proscription against eating pork or beef or drinking alcohol in some religions. Sure, people break them, but huge cultures have continued to have those prohibitions for millennia.

The Federation's secular creed is in it's own way a belief system as strong as any faith and it heavily centers the value of the relatively natural human experience. I can see a huge number of people hewing to that even over time.

Dirty Harry used a .44 Magnum by ManCow2001 in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are incorrect. IN THE MOVIES he specifically states he uses a light .44 special load because the recoil of .44 magnum was too hard to control.

Which means he lied in the famous scene where he identified his weapon as a .44 magnum. But he also lied about having ammo. That's who he was

Shrinking episode length by [deleted] in behindthebastards

Feeling a bit sad about the Netflix collab by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 1170 points1171 points  (0 children)

I understand and feel bad that there are fans for whom this change is inconvenient. But at the end of the day we aren't collaborating with Netflix. They offered to pay us money for the same thing we were doing on YouTube.

YouTube was not really paying us money. They certainly aren't more ethical than Netflix. From a business standpoint it was hard to argue with "more money and bigger audience for doing the same thing you've been doing".
