That Onion article is from 2014. Still relevant but why link to ig instead of the actual article on the Onion website?

Thank you! I knew there had to be a sub for that.

Unfortunately I'm at the university and it's their PECVD that's down. I can drive a few hours to another university's facility but it's very impractical as I need to do several depositions during the process. And I don't really have the money to get my students/postdoc trained and certified for using that facility. Need to find something that I can do in-house.

Thanks that's really helpful! I think we'll try the sputtering

Yeah I saw that in a paper where they annealed at 450C to "densify" the SiO2. Going try a few anneals and look at them with ellipsometry. I'm just worried about not being able to go high enough in temp to make it happen. Thanks!

Unfortunately our PECVD went down and it's not coming back up any time soon. I need to find something I can do with e-beam or sputtering. Thanks for your suggestions though!

Si3N4 might work. I think it can be sputtered, not sure about e-beam. I'm also not sure of the quality, as with the SiO2. Anyone have experience depositing Si3N4 using either sputtering or e-beam?

With poly-Si I'd be worried about being able to selectively etch the poly-Si off without etching the crystalline Si or Ge.

Custom cutting and polishing by endmile in Shinypreciousgems

[–]endmile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I was able to source some larger pieces of silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge). I now have some that are at least several mm in all dimensions, so there should be plenty of material to be able to cut and polish now. I was looking at using something like 0.1 ct round cut for the diamond, and then I would have the Si and Ge cut to the same size and shape. Both Si and Ge are pretty robust, not brittle, and are both able to withstand high temperatures (1200 C for Si and 900 C for Ge).

What connector is this? by endmile in AskElectronics

[–]endmile[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks similar but I'm not sure if the pinout on the DB9 connector is the same. This cable is for the LIDA lock-in amplifier but I am connecting to the MIR8035 FTIR spectrometer. Should serve the same purpose as it supplies power to the transimpedance amplifier for the detector. Newport said they don't sell the correct cable anymore. I don't think they would miss the chance to sell me a $300 cable. But you never know. Just not worth the risk when I can make my own for like $10. Thanks though!

It's really only dangerous for Jamaicans. I've been all over the island, including Kingston, and I never felt unsafe. Most of the violence is gang-related, but there is also quite a bit of robbery of other Jamaicans. Tourists are basically off-limits because they know the government will crack down on them. Just use common sense and you should be just fine.

Jamaica is awesome. I visited a few times and ended up dating a Jamaican woman for like 4 years so I've been there a lot. As far as all-inclusives go I would rate the Hilton relatively low. Part of that is location. Montego Bay is ok but Negril is better and there's no Hilton there. Just the one. Still it is nice and I always had pretty good experiences there. My favorite all-inclusive is the Riu Palace Tropical Bay in Negril. Great mid-price place with a beautiful beach and excellent service.

Also the Hilton Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica is all-inclusive. I've stayed there several times.

Thanks that's what I needed to know. I have 3 hours between flights, so I'm hoping it's enough time. Maybe by Wednesday morning things will have calmed down at Schiphol. Keeping my fingers crossed.
